ok now here's a question. If I get the steam version is there any way I can back up my files to CD? I'd like to get the silver version because I'd play all the games right away. But I'd also like a boxed set since it comes with a manual and physical CDs. What if in 10 years I think, hey, I feel like playing HL2. I go to steam and what! I can't download the game I bought anymore!?
If the silver and gold versions are the only ways to get the updated mods that is indeed very clever on Valve's behalf... I can see a lot more people switching to buying through steam. It also leads me to believe that for those who are constrained to buy it on cd it dod and hl1 ports will have to be paid for <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Ah, well. Entropy and Insurgency are gonna be better than anything they port aside from NS and TS, so I'm content even if I can't make it down to EB to cancel my pre-order.
I'm torn between the Collector's Edition and the Gold Package; On the one hand, I like the idea of having a physical copy of a game in case there is some reason I cannot download it again, I could care less about DoD:S or CS:S, and I'm not big on wearing hats, so the shirt would be nicer. On the other hand, I'm always up for getting more posters, and that soundtrack disk sounds appeals greatly to my music obsession. If we're able to purchase the soundtrack separately, I'll definitely pick up a copy and the Collector's Edition.

That's just **** up.. Here we just had the hopes that a "normal" purchase of HL would unluck HL 2 and it's mods on source, now we have to partipate in some crazy expensive online offer.. bah! Hl2 normal boxed for me..
6 cds? ouch! Collector's edition all the way for me.
Cunning marketting tactic by Valve, making the full version of CS:S available early if you purchase HL2 over steam. Now, the longer VU waits to go gold, the more potential customers they lose.

meh, i dont really like any of these packages. gold has too much useless crap, and the CE has stuff i don't want. personally, i only care about getting HL2SP and HL:S. i already have an ATi voucher, but i would also like a hard copy of the game. so, i'll probably just get the basic retail box at release.
it also sickens me that i MUST purchase CS:S along with HL2. i will never play it. they should just sell them separately - they'd probably make more money. i can see why they did it though. they can increase their sale figures for HL2 by forcing all the CS fanboys to buy up HL2. these people will probably not even touch the SP part.
I'll be getting CE. I'd like a hard copy of everything, just in case, and I'd want the box art and jewel case. I could care less about the gold package. I know I'm not going to wear a hl2 hat, I can find the music files from the game myself and burn them, and I wouldn't put posters of hl2 on my walls. Likewise with the CE shirt, I wear a medium, and America is fat, so the shirt will probably be an XL, which is waaaaay too big for me.
I just want the goodies such as HL:S, and 6 CDs --> 1 DVD. It's a shame that CE has less on it than gold though. It'll probably be more expensive too. Sigh.

Oooh, HL1:S is something I could definitely go for. I'm guessing the mapping team whipped that out instead of twiddling their thumbs while the QA team made requests to the coders and such. I'd LOVE to play HL1 on the source engine.
I'm getting whatever the ATI voucher gets me, although I feel screwed because I was sort of looking forward to HL Source and DoD Source and now I'm not so sure if I get that. It's like being punished for buying an ATI card.
