Man a laser pistol would be sweet, but what if your target had *gasp* a mirror. The right material would be able to reflect the beam, so if you were firing perpendicular to said mirror, you would have a slight problem in that the beam would melt the gun. That, or if you were at an angle, some poor sod would be doing his/her best impression of swiss cheese. Permanently.

You have two options Dorian. Either you get Mirror Armor and become invulnerable to lasers, or you get ordinary armor and survive one or two ordinary bullets. So if that guy with a laser finds you in your shininess and whips out a 9mm.... screwed.

    What's LASER short for, again?

with a car battery you'd have to change the circuit a little bit, specifically you'd have to add a voltage regulator since a car battery supplies 12V (a AA provides 1.3 right? so 4 (ideally) would provide 5.2V when in series) Of course a voltage regulator isn't hard, just stack a whole bunch of diodes to ground, fewer if you use LEDS and they can be used as power output indicator too BONUS! but you just have to figure the right size resistor to the non-grounded end of the stack and there you have a voltage regulator.

It's quite a sad story actually. You see, when briktal made <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=81874' target='_blank'>this</a> thread, a part of me died. Unfortunately, this part of me was integral to my ability to bold the letter e, with tragic results, as you can see.

[edit]And if you think that's bad, while all of this was happening, <a href='http://www.gamespot.com/ps2/action/metalslug/media.html?gcst=metalslug_ps92504gp.asx' target='_blank'>this</a> video killed my family and raped my dog.

I'm sorry, perhaps my memory is a little vague, but you don't 'feed' devices 120W of power. If a device is classed as using 10W at a particular voltage (DC), then it will not require any more current than 10W divided by the voltage?

So lets say the device runs from 12VDC, consumes 10W of power, then logically it cannot draw more than 0.8333 amps?

Like I said, my memory is a bit vague so feel free to correct me. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Lasers are rated by power output, not power input. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
I'm not sure what you mean by this. Either the laser consumes a total of 10W of power for a given input voltage, or it consumes more than this, and the 10W refers to the amount of laser energy it outputs (the rest being heat output)?

And what exactly do you mean by 'power input'?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
For example, if you rated lightbulbs by power output (the amount of useful power you got out of the bulb), a "100W" would be a 4W (assuming 4% efficiency). The beam energy of the laser is a more important figure than the power it takes to make that beam. This way you know that if the beam (power being outputted) is 20W, and you focus it down to a small enough area, it gets hot enough to cut metal.

Another point to be made, that the "dot" made by a 20W laser would probably be brighter than the sun, assuming you could see it at all. Nd:YAG lasers have wavelengths of 1064 nm, and CO2 are way down at 10,600 nm, you can see a DPSS Nd:YAG (what's in green laser pointers) laser at 532 nm. Imagine a green laser pointer that's at least 20W / 5 mW = 4000x times as bright. A CO2 laser would be even more cruel if you "shot" someone with it.

<!--QuoteBegin-Gwahir+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (Gwahir)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->with a car battery you'd have to change the circuit a little bit, specifically you'd have to add a voltage regulator since a car battery supplies 12V (a AA provides 1.3 right? so 4 (ideally) would provide 5.2V when in series) Of course a voltage regulator isn't hard, just stack a whole bunch of diodes to ground, fewer if you use LEDS and they can be used as power output indicator too BONUS! but you just have to figure the right size resistor to the non-grounded end of the stack and there you have a voltage regulator. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Powering laser diodes (LD) is really, really hard. It's not like an LED where you can just slap it onto a battery and make it work, if you overvolt an LD for microseconds, it's totally useless. You need a really precise drive to get it to work, which is why almost nobody builds solid state lasers as a hobby. <a href='http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/laserfaq.htm' target='_blank'>HeNe, CO2, ruby, dye, and N2 lasers</a> are so much easier.
