Hey,

I am currently looking for owning a dedicated server to host Natural-Selection 3.0 betas. Is this configuration enough to handle 2 * 20players public servers?

Intel Pentium 4
2.4 GHz or higher
512 MB DDR RAM
40 GB IDE hard drive

Also, I'd like to know how much bandwidth per month do you need to run a 20 slot NS server (considering it's full all day long)?

Thanks for your help! <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Hey, I just set up a server and I found the following article very useful <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    <a href='http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?pagenumber=1&threadid=98416' target='_blank'>http://www.steampowered.com/forums/showthr...&threadid=98416</a>

    Check out the first posting....that's the only important one. If you have any problems write back <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Here is the jist of what I got from the post:

    To run 1 20 player server flawlessly, you're ok. And in my oppinion to run two, well I think you'd have some issues running two. Mainly due to your RAM but the HD would be another factor holding you back. If you put another 512 in you should be able to run the two servers, just not flawlessly

    The part you'll have to consider then is bandwidth. Get the min of your max upload/download bandwidth (Usually your upload). I'll use mine as an example.

    Max upload = 800 Kbps but I'm setting aside 100 of that for other things. So I'm left with 700 Kbps

    Now you know that you want to run a 20 player server. The poster of the article stated that if you know how many players then this is how you know what to set the variable sv_maxrate:

    sv_maxrate = bandwidth * 128 / # players
    Sv_maxrate = 700 * 128 / 20
    = 4480

    The authoer of the post also stated that anything between sv_maxrate=3072 to 6144 should be your target value (6144 being the ideal). So judging upon this I'd say that you should be ok (assuming my bandwidth numbers of course).

    sv_minrate should be set to '0' to allow all clients to connect, unless you want to exclude dial-ups however, I'm with the author on this one, "They are a problem".

    THe only variable left is sv_maxupdaterate.

    sv_maxupdaterate = sv_maxrate/512
    = 8.75

    I'd push that up to 14 though and you should be ok. But test it out for yourself <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    Hope this was helpful!

    So please explain why there is no default max_rate in NS then.

    I'm getting confused on this?

    And altering the max_rate and all of that it does affect lag doesn't it.

    because it depends on server variables (badwidth expecially).

    anyway, sv_maxrate is a server variable only... no need for client.

    Regarding dial-ups, sv_minrate 2000 or 3000 should be enough to let them play

    if your implying on running 2 instances of hlds on the same machine with max 20 players on each, very BAD idea. but if you mean 2 servers with 2 independant versions of hlds on them that would work fine.

    and the bandwidth requirements will very depending on how many clients are connected to the server at the same time. usually if there are few players and not much activity, each player will use about 56kbits of data a second. as people start building lots of structures in the map the data requirement will go up from the server having to send extra data for the locations of the structures and what they are currently doing.

    the easyest way to determine the max amount of clients your internet connection can handle is by this formula:

    max upload bandwidth divided by # of clients = if this value is greater than 56kbits then your probably ok.

    so for 20 clients it would look like this

    20 * 56kbits = 1120

    you would need a little over 1 mbit to send to clients at the bare minimum.

    now if you wanted 2 servers on the same internet connection you would have to double 1120 to 2240 at minimum. if i were you i would find an internet connection that had 3.5 mbits or greater upload (if you host it yourself.)

    you can see that servers use tons of bandwidth.

    In a given month my NS server usually does about 2.5-3GB per month Xfer. This includes website, ftp, etc.

    Let me have your server no offence but mine was and I say was doing about 6 gig per month and it gets annoying when the lag spikes start happening generally if I have 40 plus players on. I'm thinking I'm choking it some how.

    As in I run a 'war' server and a normal ns + co map server.

    I only have max_rate as 8k and thats it to minrate or max_updaterate at all.

    Thats why I asked since although I've seen the commands I don't know what to set them at since the majority of the users of the server are DSL users.

    please check your math, half-life only supports a maximum of 32 players <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
