Another possible map model, might be fun! I like making big mechanical things.

Looks like a Battletech and Armored Core crossover..almost.

*edit* Once I order my freakin' copy of MS3D ill be able to do more with these things. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Hm, i've got an idea for arms if you guys are serious about this possibly becoming a HA model.

I'd have to reposition the shoulder and one leg though.

Looks a tad high poly, with all those cylinders and such.

It is a bit high, but if anyone was serious about using the model i'd go through and remove some.

It was mostly just a 'for fun' or art project kinda. Just seeing if I could make something like it.

It makes me feel good to see that all of the models ive done so far have gotten nothing but good comments!

I'm willing to let this go all the way to being a player model, i'll just need help. I could learn to UV map eventually, I just dont know how to skin...at all.

Comes with optional uber-SEIGE CANNONS. Just like the TSA uses for every time they rape a hive. I'll bet you Khaara bastards like that.

your models are nice, you just need to learn how to do smoothing groups <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Smoothing groups are a group of polygons that you specifically tell the rendering engine to "smooth". Without smoothing groups, all the poly's in your model will be rendered to look like their actual individual faces. With smoothing groups, the renderer does some trick of some sort to make it look more like they're one smooth contiguous surface thingy.

"smoothing groups" in wings are done with hard/soft edges. slect the edges you want to be visibly defined and then go to hardness > hard.

    what about the wh40k bolter!!!
  • PerditionPerdition Join Date: 2004-07-02 Member: 29692Members
Yeah, I knew about hard/smooth edges, I still have yet to go back and do them for this model. For the most recent render I just went through and slapped all hard edges on so it'd be a bit more defined. But I know there is no 3DS or MS3D style of smoothing groups in Wings.

And as for the Wh40k stuff...I just gave up on that when the group of people that agreed to help me didnt do anything. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Not that i'm holding anything against them for it.

no, no, no, mr flamethrower. it's just about the same... I muchly prefer hard/soft edges to smoothing groups.

Go play Battletech/Mechwarrior, then go play Armored Core. I tried my best to get elements of them both. The torso and legs are obviously Battletech/Mechwarrior stuff...the head and arms are sorta Battletech-ish...but more Armored Core style.

And as for liking smothing groups or hard/soft edges yet, I dunno.

Well, I started going through and kind of cleaning him up a bit. I did some smoothing on him here and there with hard/soft edges. I don't quite fully grasp the uses for smoothing in all instances, such as on a robot. But i'll figure it out.

Black are soft edges, green are hard. Tell if it's a total eff up, if it's decent, and where (if anywhere) else I should make a soft (smooth) edge.

*edit* This version of it, right now with the hollowed barrels is being built as a map model for someone, ive got the other lower poly ish one, if anyone is still interested in using it as a player model.
