Structures

Marine and Alien
When you play as an alien, I notice there is only so many chambers of one type you can build in an area before it doesn't allow you to build more. And it's usually not that much.

I don't mind that there is a limit for this. I gladly support it. I can't count the number of games where a gorge will build like 20 chambers in a hive room, that doesn't have a hive. Eventually, leaving someone else to drop the hive cause the guy is too dumb or something.

But do marines have a structure amount cap? I haven't comm-ed much myself and never have done the "mass turret in base strat." But from playing as a marine it seems marines are able to build way more turrets in an area than OCs. And I can't help but feel that turrets are way better than OCs.

They do. Its really high though, like 45. I think mines and medpacks etc count against the limit. In fact, scratch mines, and I'm 100% sure ammo and meds count against the limit. Good thing they disappear, or you wouldn't be able to build stuff in a medspammed hive room.

    45? I thought it was around 100.

    To the test-mobile!

EDIT: 40, or something very close.

No, it's around 45 or so. Placed mines count towards this limit (As do commander dropped weapons, since they stay on the ground until picked up), as do Health, meds, scanner sweep (yes, indeed) and pretty much anything else the commander can drop besides Waypoints.

I personally disagree with the limit, it should be at about 25 or so (Since chair+2IP+armory+armslab+obs+proto+PG+TF+10 turrets is nowhere near the limit of 40, and most "bases" don't go NEAR the current limit) to prevent severe laming and stop those pesky server crashes when an onos or something walks into a 3 TF + max turret'd room. D:

I have done that before, btw.. On siege, I believe. If the server hadn't crashed from all the hitscan weapons hitting me, I would have died in about 3 whole seconds.

You know when I started with NS way back I thought by building enough alien structures in a hive room would bring up the hive eventually.

you can go over the limit with placed mines. mines do count towards the limit, but they can be used to go past it. ex: you can make a carpet of mines outside your base if you spam the mines in comm mode somewhere far enough away. i can make a pic, but i think you get the point

Yes. I remember the brief time when mines would stack upon themselves, I would doodle around by making mine ladders to various places. Oodles of fun, especially when the gorgie alien WoL'd the whole map and spit one mine on the bottom, causing a very slow and eventual end to my awesome mine tower.. and I forgot to build an IP. Doh!

But yeah, the "limit" is only on commander dropped items/structures.

All you need is 2 gorges and it wont matter if its 100 or 200 turrets in the same room.

When it comes to the hl engine ability limits, not only max objects but limiting them "per area", it well done.

Yes. There are structure limits in NS because NS has "hacked" the HL engine in many ways. One of these ways is with the placing of structures and other items (like medpacks). In normal HL, an ent is placed on the map by the mapper, which then endlessly spawns "X" item In NS, when the commander gives the order to build or drop somthing, he is REALLY telling the engine to create an entity, aligned with the floor normals, at position XYZ. Then the HL engine creates an temp entity there, which spawns the building or item. Since the HL engine has a limited amount of max entities, building limits are needed to keep that from being exceeded and crashing the server.
