<div class="IPBDescription">I think I've found a solution</div> After sticking my nose into my CFG a bit, it seems that some of the default netcode variables are weird. Now, I know that many people know how to change these variables and what numbers work well; so this post is not for you.
<a href='http://members.cox.net/benkarcher/temp/netcode.doc' target='_blank'>Here</a> is a good document written on the netcode variables in Counter-Strike, which are the same things in NS. Read up.
In short, IF YOU ARE HAVING CHOKE PROBLEMS IN B5:
Type <span style='color:red'>rate 20000</span> in the console.
That was my problem, and I know at least one other person who had the same problem. I'm sorry if this solution was imbedded in a thread somewhere; I figured that I should make it easy to find if it wasn't already.
Other variables that you may be able to screw around with are overviewed in that .doc file.
If you still have problems with lag, type <span style='color:red'>net_graph 3</span> in the console, post the information, and the HL engine monkeys that reside in this forum may know how to help you.

it's entirely serverside and probably has something to do with all of the new garbage added for this version which is overloading the already overly stressed server even further
i just join the server...
or when im downloading stuff...

I suspect that it's client-side. Some people have the problems and others don't.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Doesn't help me much....tried everything, still getting 15-25 fps <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Having frames-per-second drops is completely different from having latency issues. Check your video card, video drivers, and what settings were changed between B4a and B5.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Uh... if you have bad rates you are gonna lag no matter the version, no matter the game...

Since B5 was a new install and included a fresh CFG file, some people may have forgotton to change and/or don't know how to change their netcode variables. I lagged really badly up until I remembered to change my rate from whatever weird default it was set to.
<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Rate's already at 20000. Skulks still fly magically through shotgun bullets. Thanks for the effort, but this won't help. <!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Here's another problem that I just remembered. The default <span style='color:red'>ex_interp</span> is set to 0.1. It should be set to zero, and with developer mode on, it should tell you when it automatically changes to fit your <span style='color:red'>cl_updaterate</span>.
My netcode settings follow:
<span style='color:red'>cl_updaterate 30
cl_cmdrate 30
rate 20000
ex_interp 0</span>
And I have absolutely no lag problems. So, if you have lag issues (not FPS related), then post your settings on those variables and post what <span style='color:red'>net_graph 3</span> is telling you.
Again, I know that this is old. However, I found the root of my problem here, and I suspect others might. I'm going to be tinkering around a bit with my settings to see what works and what doesn't, so I'll keep trying to help you guys out along the way.
One other problem is that people FORGET, like I did when I originally played B5. There was some warping here and there, and only after about a week (when it got really annoying) did I find the answer to the problem, which was after I checked my net_graph and saw a constant choke of 60-70. People forget that they need to change these variables when they make their new CFG. People forget that this might be their problem.
I know that many of the problems with B5 lag are part of the server. I've been experimenting on this since I posted this thread. However, many parts are also clientside. Since I changed my rate, my ping was beautiful and my latency disappeared on a few of the servers I played on.
That's proof that there IS a clientside problem as well as a serverside problem.
Would have been simpler if you just said that <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
<span style='color:red'>cl_updaterate 30
cl_cmdrate 30
rate 20000
ex_interp 0</span> <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
I was playing today and i was having massive lag... and a player named Sunkist totally said the same thing... but the cl_cmdrate was 50... rather than 30...
lag solved

Hurray for misinformed assumptions. How long have you been making your own mods, doofus?

Actually he's kind of right, most of the stuff in ns is "hacked" so to speak. Most of the stuff in ns isn't possible with regular hl coding by default, so to make it possible we either have to write all of it ourself, or find a way to trick hl into thinking it's acceptable. A simple change could cause a lot of things to go wrong.
Ding Ding we have a winnar.

No, it's completely off the mark, trust me I didn't forget to update my .cfg, and I still get horrendus registry issues
It would be nice if somebody organized a test with the server ops, because I bet that some of the issues lie right there.
By the way, remember that bad FPS and netcode/latency issues are two completely different realms.
THEY WIll FVXORED UP YOUR GAME! I JUST TRIED THESE AND NOW ALL I GET IS CHOKE AND LOSS!!
THIS IS YOUR LAST WARNING!!!

Holy cow. What variables did you change and what did you change them to? I'll see what went wrong and how it can be fixed.
Remember, I'm not responsible for something that you do to your CFG, but I'm trying to help the best I can.
