This Is An Rts At Heart

Learn to play it like one...
I see a lot of people asking for some kind of miracle weapon to take down the powerful classes on both sides when things get tough. I see aliens complaining about how hard it is to counter HA/HMGs with skulks and maybe a fade or two, and I see marines complaining that fades are too powerful for mere LMGs to take down.

Well I'm sure most of you have played RTSs in the past, and that's a reason why you play NS. People sometimes don't realize that this game plays like an RTS. I play a lot of Warcraft III and in that game, expansion is everything. You build up your base then go grab another gold mine and expand there, and keep collecting gold and expanding more until you take over the map. Often people don't expand enough, don't know how to command their units, or turtle up in their base, while the other players expand and upgrade and build massive armies. They send their armies to obliterate the guy who didn't expand and didn't upgrade. It's his grunts and level 1 hero against everything the other guy's got. They don't complain and ask for some type of "miracle counter weapon" to somehow save themselves from getting crushed, no, they either be stubborn and run to another base and try to expand and build up some more resistance, or they accept defeat and live with it.

*** NS plays a lot like an RTS in that respect. Players need to learn to suck it up when it comes to getting slammed and learn to expand and build more resources faster than the other guy. The key to winning this game is expanding faster and upgrading better and faster than the other guy. That's how RTSs were designed. The reward for the most expansion and the best upgrades is getting to tear through your opponent's lack of defense. ***

If you weren't smart enough or quick enough to expand fast enough to build a decent resistance, that's your own fault, and complaining about miracle weapons to save yourself when you're weak and getting slammed by powerful opponents will get you nowhere. This is 90% RTS and 10% FPS, quit trying to play it like an FPS and learn to play it like an RTS.

By all means. I think people need to explore this philosiphy when they play. I commanded for the first time last night and won as marines, which I've never seen since the patch, and I always played alien. I felt like I was playing Warcraft. Instead of trying to take a hive with nothing, I focused on taking over resource nodes and defending those as fast as possible. When I had five resource nodes I had a steady stream of resources coming in, and at the same time I would go back and upgrade the armory to level 3 weapons/armor, and when we had a surplus of everything, I started sending people to hives and setting up seige turrets to take out buidlings inside, and when they were weakened, the marines went in and cleaned up. I didn't have to worry about funding the attacks, because I had control of all the resource nodes. This is how an RTS should be played.

This is fun, but I don't recommend it. Play the game like it was meant to be played and you'll go far.

im with you clubber. when im a gorge i always secure each of my interests (res tower, hive, etc) before moving on. if you have 10 unguarded/weakly guarded resource towers thats nothing because they can be torn down by the enemy and replaced by something you cant take down.

Here's something else I did. I all of a sudden remembered playing humans in Warcraft III and the priests can auto cast healing on people in combat.. when I would see marines fighting skulks or other aliens I would find them and grab health packs and follow them around and drop health packs right on top of them. I've saved a lot of lives doing that. I saw a skulk bite a marine to the brink of death and I dropped a health pack right on him and it gave him that extra millisecond to blast the skulk to bits. They never thanked me probably because they were too busy fighting off the aliens to notice that I dropped a health pack on them and saved their life.

I disagree. I think we need a nuclear railgun.

Very well described, but a few intellegent aliens would take down 75% of your resources with ease... Then they would have 3 hives and you would be out of luck, I feel that I rather lay down a few siege at base and secure a hive with a few siege sitting there too, then try to secure resources like that. It is a rather unexpected surprise, if I were on the aliens team I would be thinking that you were going to build sieges at the resources so you could hit our hive.

if they beat you its because there better not because its not balanced.

I can see your point. That strategy only works sometimes. One of the resources we secured was the third hive. I forgot to say that. We locked down a hive and then cut it off from the other resources and we slowly made our way down to the other two hives they had. Had they gotten that third hive we might've been in trouble but one of the hives we secured was a third hive.

When I'm playing commander and someone thanks me for a health pack i yell at them. I gave them a pack so we can win the game and winning the game doesn't involve please and thank you, so go build me that turret!
