I Need Testers

[WHO]Them[WHO]Them You can call me Dave Join Date: 2002-12-11 Member: 10593Members, Constellation

To test this new 3D graphics engine.
I need as many people as I can get to download and test a 3D graphics engine I'm working on to see if it has any hardware incompatibilities. I need to make sure that these core functionalities work for all video cards for an upcoming student game I'm working on.

So, if you've got a few minutes, I'd appreciate it if you downloaded this and ran it.

What you should see is a couple cars/buggies floating in space, lit by a green light, and an infinite tunnel effect.

Basically, you should see this...

If the test works, then I'd like to know what FPS you got and a brief description of your CPU, OS, and graphics card.

If the test doesn't work for one reason or another. I'd like you to run "dxdiag", hit "save all information", and send me the output as an attachment to dkircher@digipen.edu .

Thank you in advance to all who decide to help me out.

fps?

And on a separate note, I'd also appreciate it if people would also hit x after it displays for a while to put it in full screen mode.

Maybe a 10-20 FPS gain in full screen... the mouse cursor is still there, though. That's the only problem I see.

The "blue thing" is stationary. Looking at it from different angles makes it change. Did you see a tunnel effect at all?

Works.

Pentium 4 3360 MHz (With HT)
1024MB PC2700 DDR RAM
[EDIT] XP Pro SP2 (DX9.0c) [/EDIT]
128MB Radeon 9600XT (no overclocking)

Windowed FPS: 516
Fullscreen FPS: 563

Note: When looking directly at the tunnel effect, the windowed FPS is about 10% higher than the fullscreen FPS (the FPS above are looking at a slight angle, to see multiple buggies).

Success.

I calculated the FPS when zooming out to encapture a good view of all the buggies; and from that view, gauged a 204. Full-screen likewise successful.

Pentium 4 1.6GHz (overclocked at 2.24GHz)
Windows XP Professional SP2 Build 2600

Would this be affected by VSynch? I got 1050 when not looking at the cars & 350 when looking at the cars in windowed mode. When I switched to fullscreen however, my FPS dropped to 60.

Failed. Was unable to take a screenshot of the error, as it completly froze the system and needed a hard-reboot. Tried again, same result. Memory could not be read error. Sent DxDiagFail.txt to provided email address.

Athlon XP 3000+
768MB RAM, DDR but unknown speed
Radeon 9800 pro 128MB, stock speeds
Desktop resolution 2048x1536 32bit

Test conditions:
All other programs except Firefox & Windows Media player closed. Windowed FPS could be as low as single-digits if *any* other windowed program utilizing ATI HydraVision's transparency effect was on desktop at same time. All FPS stats are from when not moving controls, but using "y" button for autorotate unless direction specified,

Windowed Min FPS: 365. Zoomed out enough to see all buggies + tunnel effect.
Windowed Max FPS: 900-1000. Zoomed in far enough to see dark blue of tunnel effect, and no buggies. 1500-2000 if zoomed in even past blue tunnel effect.
Average ranged from 300-800, with a noticeable correlation to the number of buggies/reflections viewable.

Fullscreen, with most buggies & tunnel effect viewable: 300-800.
Fullscreen, looking away from buggies: 1000-4000. Seemed to vary depending on which direction I was looking "away."

Notes: controls to enable fog and toggle antialiasing had no noticeable effect in either windowed or fullscreen.
The program also isn't very friendly with my Dvorak non-US-standard keyboard layout. Pressing "d" both enables wireframe and strafes right because "d" on QUERTY is "e" on Dvorak.

[edit]UPDATE: A fluke bug I "fixed" once by exiting and running the graphics test again is now happening again, and isn't so easily fixed. Exact cause of bug unknown. Result is that no buggies appear during program runtime in windowed or fullscreen mode; can only see blue tunnel effect. Windowed FPS average 600-900 at most zoom ranges. Will edit again if solution found.

[edit2]Giving up trying to find solution, repeatedly running program doesn't make buggies reappear. Did not try restarting computer. Sent DXDiag report. Will test updated versions upon request.

Worked fine:

Pentium III 800MHz
384MB RAM
Windows 2000 SP 4
GeForce 4 Ti 4600 dual-monitor

Did not disable 2nd monitor.

Windowed:
0 cars: 1100+ fps
1 car: ~300 fps
2 cars: ~175 fps
3 cars+: ~100 fps

Full Screen (one monitor; other monitor still displaying desktop):
1 car: 125-175 fps
2 cars: 100-125 fps
3+: 40-70 fps
* I seemed to slowly gain fps as I let the screen sit still.

Notes:
1) I had no cursor; moving the mouse made my view pan around the scene.
2) alt-F4 failed to terminate the program (and with no cursor, I could not hit the [X]) -- I successfully exited by hitting ESC.
3) Upon attempting to restart the program (to test its performance on the second monitor and when straddling between the two), it failed repeatedly with a general Program Error.

DXDiag report sent just in case.

[edit] Them, in that sample pic the blue mirrors have rotated or something, the copy I get they hold the same position. Is there a keystroke to rotate them? or is my copy screwing up?

I just wanted to thank everyone again for the test information. I had hoped that it wouldn't crash completely for anyone, but hopes are meant to be crushed :/

And just to reiterate on the rotating tunnel, that is a nonstandard effect and requires you to rotate the camera to see. The tunnel does not rotate on it's own.

I don't need any FPS reports when people aren't looking at anything, the system culls out objects that it knows you can't see. So when you're looking at nothing, all that's happening is the screen being cleared and rendering the fps 3 times per frame.

And special thanks to Marik Steele for the detailed report on hydravision extended testing. I'm going to have to read up on that seeing as how it's completely debilitating yet not crashing.
