"In the modern world, great leaders resolve their conflicts with words..... Words like: 'SCUD Launcher', 'Carpet Bombing', 'Tomahawk Missiles'." -C&C Generals opening intro.
Just finished reading the PS:Torment Novelization....
Wow. I never thought a game could (or would) adress issues that...<i>deep.</i> Th ending was great, too. Is that the only ending, or are there better ones?
"Bravery is not a function of firepower." - JC Denton (Deus Ex).
"Power shifts more quickly than some people think." - Kane (Command & Conquer).
"...of course, it's not true. But the world only believes what the media tells it to believe. And <i>I</i> tell the media what to believe; it's really quite simple." - Kane (Command & Conquer).
"All right then. Shoot. But make it a good one, because if I don't drop dead the <i>second</i> you pull the trigger, you lose the rest of your ugly face." - Lev Arris (Privateer 2).
NetStorm has like a bajillion good quotes in it, because every unit in the game has a quote in its help file. Mostly to do with the game lore, so the people who said them aren't actually characters in the game. I'll put in these names nonetheless.
"Two things in life cannot be ignored: one is a cannon, the other is a cannon ball." - Commander Petrik "Bombard" Lombard (NetStorm).
"I wouldn't mind living above ground, but battle crossfire tends to burn your house down." - Damon Runyon, Regular Guy (NetStorm).
...hm. Actually, those are pretty much the only two that make much sense without having played the game.
"Envision success. Envision only success. A morose attitude is most unbecoming in a servant of death." - Charnel, God of Death (Sacrifice).
"I have lived for ages. Through war, plague, and all manner of strife. I have witnessed the dawn of empires; known countless villains and kings. And <i>none</i> have been as annoying as you." - Toldor (Sacrifice).
"These pig creatures are like nothing I've ever seen before!" - Thrall (Warcraft 3). <span style='font-size:6pt;line-height:100%'>(Think about it for a moment <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->)</span>
"Yanks, Krauts, tanks, banks, trucks, gooooold! What will be the outcome? Only time... will tell." - unnamed radio announcer (Wolfenstein Enemy Territory)
Wow. I never thought a game could (or would) adress issues that...<i>deep.</i> Th ending was great, too. Is that the only ending, or are there better ones?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd--> There are <i>numerous</i> alternative endings to the finale. I was actually looking through the dialogue last night through the Infinity Engine Explorer actually, looking over the divergent dialogues possible (again <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo--> ). Some of this might be repeated from the posted text, but some of it is new...
<span style='font-size:21pt;line-height:100%'><span style='font-family:Arial'><span style='color:red'>WARNING!!! PLANESCAPE: TORMENT ENDING SPOILER. HIGHLIGHT AND RUIN AT YOUR OWN RISK!</span></span></span>
I don't want to copy and paste the entire thing... the first line you read can be found in context from the script I linked; the rest is a divergent string, which I've 'slightly' modified. The truth is, the novelization does this itself for the purposes of making the story run smoother from out of the game. There was also a piece of dialogue that was left out that I thought was rather important. I'll put that one up first...
<span style='color:#062639'>
"If we are linked as you say, I would know my name." <i>or</i> "If we are linked as you say, then speak our name."
<i>(the following will differ depending on the answer you give Grace when she questions you about names)</i>
A NAME IS A THING EARNED BY A MAN THROUGH HIS ACTIONS. BY THE NATURE OF THAT, THE NAME WE ONCE HAD IS MEANINGLESS. <i>or</i> A NAME IS A CLOAK OF LETTERS THROWN UPON A MAN. IT MEANS NOTHING. <i>or</i> A NAME IS A THING GIVEN TO A MAN BY THOSE THAT SEE HIM FOR WHAT HE IS. BY THE NATURE OF THAT, THE NAME WE ONCE HAD IS MEANINGLESS.
"You don't *know* what our name was, do you?"
THERE IS NO ONE IN ALL EXISTENCE THAT KNOWS OUR NAME. THIS IS OUR SHIELD. NAMES CARRY POWER. WHEN ONE IS *NAMELESS* AS WE ARE, THEN ONE IS STRONG. WE CANNOT BE HUNTED. WE CANNOT BE TRACKED. WE CANNOT BE HARMED.
"Why was that ever important? Were we being hunted?"
ALL THAT LIVES IS HUNTED. THE PREDATOR IS DEATH. IT HUNTS US NO LONGER.
"No, it now hunts for *others* in our place. Countless others are dying because you and I are separated. We cannot continue to live like this, or else we will continue killing others in our place."
EVERYTHING THAT LIVES DIES. THE SHADES HERE SUFFER, BUT FOR THEM, IT IS IMMORTALITY OF A SORT. I AM THE LIGHT IN THE DARKNESS OF THIS FORTRESS, AND THEIR HATRED IS FOR YOU, NOT I.
"So you will allow innocents to suffer in our place?"
IF YOU WOULD END THEIR SUFFERING, SUBMIT TO ME. ALLOW YOURSELF TO BE KEPT IN THIS FORTRESS WITHIN THE CRYSTAL, AND INNOCENTS NEED NOT SUFFER. THEY SUFFER BECAUSE *YOU* DIE, NOT I.
"I will not allow myself to be held prisoner... Our name is known to me, creature. In knowing, I have become strong."
YOU *LIE.* OUR NAME IS LOST, FORGOTTEN, AND SO IT SHALL REMAIN UNTIL ETERNITY DIES.
"Do I lie? If you are of me, you *know* when I deceive you. I do not lie now."
EVEN WITH SUCH KNOWING, YOU DO NOT HAVE THE POWER TO DEFEAT ME.
"Yes, I do - and I shall not allow you to trick me into a battle that is not even necessary. For in knowing my name, my true name, I know yours. There is nothing more you can do to me."
I WILL *UNMAKE* YOU.
"No, you will not - you will rejoin with me, and we shall become as one again, as we were meant."
YOU KNOW NOT WHAT YOU DO. IF WE ARE RE-UNITED, THEN IT SHALL BE AN ENDING. THERE SHALL BE NO *FUTURE* FOR US. WE SHALL GO ON TO FURTHER TORMENTS.
<i>(the rest follows the same ending you saw before)</i>
. . . . . . . . . . . . .
<i>(continued from the dialogue path from the novelization</i>
EVEN IF THERE WERE TRUTH IN YOUR WORDS, THERE IS NOTHING TO BE DONE. I WOULD SOONER DIE THE DEATH OF THE BODY HERE IN THIS FORTRESS THAN SUFFER EXISTENCE WITH YOU.
<s>"So if I were to die, that link would be broken..."</s>
"But why choose that slow, crawling oblivion when we have another solution? If you and I were to be re-united, both of us would cease suffering; we would become whole."
YOUR WORDS ARE *POISON* TO ME. I NO LONGER WISH TO BE A PART OF YOU AND SHARE YOUR *WRETCHED* EXISTENCE. LOOK AT YOU. YOUR SHELL IS BROKEN AND SCARRED. I WOULD RATHER DIE FREE THAN ENCASED IN YOUR SICKLY SHELL.
"And look at *you.* A spectral creature that postures and boasts, but whose life and his power are figments of what life once was. Is that how you wish the Planes to remember you after you fade into oblivion?"
I DO NOT WISH TO TRADE ONE OBLIVION FOR ANOTHER. AND I DO NOT WISH TO INHABIT YOUR SHELL, BROKEN ONE.
"It doesn't *have* to be oblivion. Who knows what will happen if we become whole? Perhaps you shall be yourself, and I shall be the one who dies. Or perhaps the two of us will become something *greater* than the parts."
YOU KNOW NOT WHAT YOU SPEAK OF. IF WE ARE RE-UNITED, THEN IT SHALL BE AN ENDING. THERE SHALL BE NO *FUTURE* FOR US. WE SHALL GO ON TO FURTHER TORMENTS. I KNOW THIS.
"Then we shall confront these torments together, as one being. And we shall defeat them."
KNOW THAT IF WE BECOME ONE, WE SHALL SUFFER. THERE IS TOO *MUCH* OF THE NATURE OF THE FIRST ONE IN US FOR US TO BE SAVED. WE SHALL BE DAMNED.
KNOW THAT I HAVE ALWAYS *HATED* YOU, BROKEN ONE. WHEN WE ARE ONE, I WILL CONTINUE TO *HATE* YOU. WHEN YOUR SHELL DIES AT LAST, KNOW THAT I SHALL TAKE *PLEASURE* IN YOUR DEATH.
"I can live with that - and so can the planes. If we are cast low, then you shall know pleasure in my suffering. But it is better than you join with me and hate me than we die slowly apart, with nothing but oblivion awaiting us."
"Welcome to the HEV MACH 4 Protection System. For use in Hazadorus Enviroment Conditions. High Impact Reactive Armor, Activated. Atmospheric Containment Sensors, Activated. Vital Signs Monitoring, Activated. Auto-Medical Systems Engaged. Defensive Weapons Selection System, Activated. Aummuntion Monitoring, Activated. Have a very nice day." - Half-Life HEV Suit.
Some parts of this may be wrong. But what from I can remember this is what it said the first time you get it. I also remember "Warning! Life Signs Critical."

Edit -
Becase SMAC does indeed rock -
Richard Baxton piloted his Recon Rover into a fungal vortex and held off four waves of mind worms, saving an entire colony. We immediately purchased his identity manifests and repackaged him into the Recon Rover Rick character with a multi-tiered media campaign: televids, touchbooks, holos, psi-tours--the works. People need heroes. They don't need to know how he died clawing his eyes out, screaming for mercy. The real story would just hurt sales, and dampen the spirits of our customers.
"Mythology for Profit" Morgan Stellartots Keynote Speech
I am now convinced more then ever that SMAC has the ultimate win in meaningful gaming quotes.
I have often been asked: if we have traveled between the stars, why can we not launch the simplest of orbital probes? These fools fail to understand the difficulty of finding the appropriate materials on this Planet, of developing adequate power supplies, and creating the infrastructure necessary to support such an effort. In short, we have struggled under the limitations of a colonial society on a virgin planet. Until now.
Col. Corazon Santiago "Planet: A Survivalist's Guide"
As the writhing, teeming mass of Mind Worms swarmed over the outer perimeter, we saw the defenders recoil in horror. "Stay calm! Use your flame guns!" shouted the commander, but to no avail. It is well known that the Mind Worm Boil uses psychic terror to paralyze its prey, and then carefully implants ravenous larvae in the brains of its still-conscious victims. Even with the best weapons, only the most disciplined troops can resist this horrific attack.
Lady Deirdre Skye "Our Secret War"
I believe Planet will talk to us if we are willing to listen. These fungal stalks behave as multistate relays: taken together, the neural net connectivity must be staggering. Can a planet be said to have achieved sentience?
Lady Deirdre Skye Arguments in Council
As the Americans learned so painfully in Earth's final century, free flow of information is the only safeguard against tyranny. The once-chained people whose leaders at last lose their grip on information flow will soon burst with freedom and vitality, but the free nation gradually constricting its grip on public discourse has begun its rapid slide into despotism. Beware of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master.
Commissioner Pravin Lal "U.N. Declaration of Rights"
We welcome you, earthdeirdre and earthwheat and earthtree as honored guests, for you add great power to our ancient song-- planetfungus and planetworm and planetmind sing and play here, and you are welcome among us.
Lady Deirdre Skye "Conversations with Planet"
Mary had a little lamb, Little lamb little lamb, Mary had a little lamb, whose fleece was white as snow.
Assassins' Redoubt Final Transmission
And what of the immortal soul in such transactions? Can this machine transmit and reattach it as well? Or is it lost forever, leaving a soulless body to wander the world in despair?
Sister Miriam Godwinson "We Must Dissent"
From the delicate strands, between minds we weave our mesh: a blanket to warm the soul.
Lady Deirdre Skye "The Collected Poems"
Imagine the entire contents of the planetary datalinks, the sum total of human knowledge, blasted into the Planetmind's fragile neural network with the full power of every reactor on the planet. Thousands of years of civilization compressed into a single searing burst of revelation. That is our last-ditch attempt to win humanity a reprieve from extinction at the hands of an awakening alien god.
Academician Prokhor Zakharov "Planet Speaks"
No longer mere earthbeings and planetbeings are we, but bright children of the stars! And together we shall dance in and out of ten billion years, celebrating the gift of consciousness until the stars themselves grow cold and weary, and our thoughts turn again to the beginning.
Lady Deirdre Skye "Conversations with Planet"
The popular stereotype of the researcher is that of a skeptic and a pessimist. Nothing could be further from the truth! Scientists must be optimists at heart, in order to block out the incessant chorus of those who say "It cannot be done."
Academician Prokhor Zakharov University Commencement
You are orphans, earthdeirdre, your homeworld already buried so young among the aeons. Yet now you fill the skies where we watched a million sunsets with flame and contrails, paying no heed to the hard lessons the universe has tried to teach you. Are you a breath of life to invigorate a complacent world, you earthhumans, or an insidious cancer which must be excised?
Lady Deirdre Skye "Conversations With Planet"
We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

"These pig creatures are like nothing I've ever seen before!" - Thrall (Warcraft 3). <span style='font-size:6pt;line-height:100%'>(Think about it for a moment <!--emo&;)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wink-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wink-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->)</span>
"Yanks, Krauts, tanks, banks, trucks, gooooold! What will be the outcome? Only time... will tell." - unnamed radio announcer (Wolfenstein Enemy Territory)
I'll add more when I think of them.
Wow. I never thought a game could (or would) adress issues that...<i>deep.</i>
Th ending was great, too. Is that the only ending, or are there better ones?<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
There are <i>numerous</i> alternative endings to the finale.
<span style='color:#062639'>
"If we are linked as you say, I would know my name."
<i>or</i>
"If we are linked as you say, then speak our name."
<i>or</i>
A NAME IS A CLOAK OF LETTERS THROWN UPON A MAN. IT MEANS NOTHING.
<i>or</i>
A NAME IS A THING GIVEN TO A MAN BY THOSE THAT SEE HIM FOR WHAT HE IS.

</span>
Some parts of this may be wrong. But what from I can remember this is what it said the first time you get it. I also remember "Warning! Life Signs Critical."

Technological advance is an inherently iterative process. One does not simply take sand from the beach and produce a Dataprobe.

Until now.
