I'm reasonably sure your average AMD runs hotter than your average Northwood, but the Prescots are a totally new issue. Other than 64 bit shizzle the intel chips generally adapt the newest mobo features more rapidly then the AMD chips to anyways, so it is all entirely possible that they were testing with mobo features on the pentiums that AMD boards simply hadn't adapted yet. I assure you, all good AMD boards have temperature sensitive shut offs these days.
I am really sick of all the people who previously posted in this thread.
I want to clarify something:
With hyper-threading on, you do not get the benefits of running 2 processors (as in an SMP setup), at most, you'll see around a 15% gain, and most of hyper-threading's advantages start to disappear when you ramp up the clock speeds.
The regular Newcastle A64s currently represent your best value for a CPU right now. Their on-die memory controller gives them a massive advantage in that they can use cheap generic RAM just as effectively as your über 2-2-2-5 RAM.
The P4 architecture is deeply bandwith starved. Intel solves this by using dual channel, massive bandwith RAM (more costly) for the same performance.
Media encoding is the P4's best area, everything else, the A64 just dominates. Keep in mind that the A64 runs both 32 and 64 bit code natively, so if you upgrade now, you can ensure that you can use 64 bit OS (Longhorn, XP 64 bit edition) and the subsequent 64 bit applications that will follow.
I would recommend:
A64 2800+ Any second/third generation 754 motherboard using the nVidia nForce 3 250GB chipset 1 gig of value RAM, Mushkin basic green, Crucial, Samsung 6800 Non-Ultra or wait for the 6600GT in AGP flavor
The above will cost approximately 625-725 in USD, assuming you live in the States. It'll cost a bit more in other places, as VAT is the devil.
Then get your standard IDE 80-250 GB hard drive, and your choice of monitor, keyboard, all the peripherals.
If you disagree with this setup in any way, shape, or form, you are a moron. Gaming and 3d intensive applications seem to be the focus, so you won't be able to get decent performance with a budget entry-level system, and going high end is just a waste.
Good day.
Edit:
Yes, Prescotts do run extremely hot, however, they are designed to stand the extra heat. Still, you don't want to use a stock HSF with it, I'd recommend a Thermalright with a nice Panaflo fan if you're concerned about noise, or go full out with a 92mm Tornado.
Also, you your first build, you had not specified if it was a Northwood B or C, I'm guessing C, or a Prescott.
The A64s are just faster. They run cooler than the Prescott, they are substantially better than the Northwood in everything except encoding, you'll get your money's worth.

Although unless you are really shopping around like the dickens that rig is (with or without the switch) will probably cost you alot more than 725 USD, unless you need absolutly no decent peripherals what so ever. Monitors and decent sounds systems don't come cheap... (unless you are willing to settle for crap.

I used to be a big Intel fan, until i saw the difference an AMD can have over an Intel PC in games...
I recently bought myself a new pc. It is an AMD Athlon 64 FX-53. Allthough my videocard is a Radeon 9000 i can put my graphics on maximum and yet remain at 100 Frames/Second in any game. This proves that the AMD processor itself can boost performance of a videocard. Also, my processor is said to run at 2.4 GHz, and yet the moment i press my power button i am allready waching my desktop load before my screen has even had the chance to heat up enough to display something... I install any game in seconds, and never have lag spikes during gameplay, ect...
The processor alone costs arround 1200 $ CA, and the ASUS Socket 940 Mobo is around 279$ CA... But if your looking for performance in games AMD is the way to go, it rially is worth what it costs.

Anyways. I found this for about $700 (with taxes (Canadian)). I think it's pretty nice... will check it out in more detail on Monday.
Thanks for all the help and input! <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
Well I recall a while back you saying that you would not be multitasking. It seemed a bit contradictory.
But yeah whatever man, as long as it is better than your current PC.
I seem to recall a little expierement done by THG a while ago where they ran Quake 3 on the Pentium III, Pentium 4, and whatever AMD's counterparts were at the time, then <i>removed the entire heatsink while playing.</i>
The two AMD's went up in smoke, literally.
The P3 locked up, but when the computer was restarted it was fine. The P4 didn't smoke or crash, but cleverly slowed waaaay down, taking it from >100 fps to <20; the game went on. When the heatsink was replaced, it sped right up again.

Before...

After. Awww, poor AMD. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
<a href='http://www6.tomshardware.com/cpu/20010917/index.html' target='_blank'>Here's the article</a>, better yet, <a href='http://www12.tomshardware.com/images/thg_video_1_cpu_cooling.zip' target='_blank'>here are (DivX) videos</a>.

Knowing THG if they included the P3 in the article and playing Quake 3 a pretty old game that means they were putting them up to par VS. the AMD Durons, Athlon 1400 and up to Athlon XP 1600+, pretty much old Chips.
I would really enjoy seeing them trying to do that kind of an experiment with a Prescott Core Based P4. Good luck with that.

Ya, the Prescot core chips cookify in seconds, even with a powerful heatsink setup they gennerally run quite hot.
A64 2800+
Any second/third generation 754 motherboard using the nVidia nForce 3 250GB chipset
1 gig of value RAM, Mushkin basic green, Crucial, Samsung
6800 Non-Ultra or wait for the 6600GT in AGP flavor

Swap out that crappy 6800 for a sexy X800 and your friggin set. Although unless you are really shopping around like the dickens that rig is (with or without the switch) will probably cost you alot more than 725 USD, unless you need absolutly no decent peripherals what so ever. Monitors and decent sounds systems don't come cheap... (unless you are willing to settle for crap.

dude i dont know what planet yer from but where i come from (a small alaskan shopping mall) we dont believe in all those mac wives tales! i love my mac! i mean, if you can fit your whole computer inside a monitor and use one button to opperate it you know your dealing with the best! the only thing that could possibly make it better would be what? maybe if it came in fruity colors? hell macs got that coverd... so i recomend tou shut your mouth before i throw a freaking rainbow colored apple at it... be-otch

Ok, that was an interesting first post... Maby you should tell me what you are using your mac for and I will tell you how much it sucks for that function. Because unless you are doing alot of video editing, your mac can't possibly be anywhere near the functionality of any PC in the same price range.
PS, alaskan shopping malls suck

doesnt have to be hitler but ya man
ya i actually knew that.. i figured you got it from a dancing man site or something.. whatever

Holy begeezes, your vid card is a brutal bottle neck on that system. You could be pulling insane FPS values on doom 3 with that processer, but that card probably won't even support it.
