Yes. But I've heard from unreliable sources that wireless mice have noticable latency, so they are not used as much in gaming circles.

yeah, if you do get a laser mouse get a logitech mx 500 or 510...best optical mouses.

I personally use an MX510, an optical, non-wireless mouse. As a general rule, if it works in windows and half-life, it'll probably work in NS.

Also as a general rule, remember that anything with a mousewheel is considered hacking, especially if you have up bound to drop an O chamber, and down bound to drop an RT. D: I should really change those.

4+ button mice are very, very nice for FPSes for (among other things) voice comm, and map viewing. Dunno how many times I've saved my own butt by keeping a good eye on the red dots zipping around the map. "You've got incoming to atmospheric, phase through" "Oh snap, that onos got owned" "yay!"

any wireless mouse over $10 (that is, any mouse that isn't complete trash) will have no noticable latency

I have a Microsoft wireless optical mouse, and it plays NS fine.

the only drawback is if it's moved REALLY fast (faster than you usually move it in NS) it'll "snap" to the corner of the screen maybe 2 out of 10 times. it's not a problem for me because I use high sensitivity (thus, slower movements make me spin faster than some people, etc).

remember, though, mine is WIRELESS. you should have fewer problems with a high-quality optical mouse.

Logitec mice have no noticable "latency" problems... unless you buy some old 5 dollar one from a used market or something... Most newer wireless mice fair pretty well unless your trying to play from 20' away.

After playing with a optical mouse (only one sensor too) I can barely use a wheel mouse any more, the optical is way too precise, its friggin godly.

$50 I use Wireless Logitech MX700 Duo (Includes KB).
$10 Microsoft Optical Wired Wheel mouse has serious snapping issues.
$5 Fry's Kensington Wired Optical mouse plays fine.

my optical mouse is crappy on NS, but then again, its crappy on every game

Optical mouses don't get dirty as fast as bal-mice, AND they react better to fast movement, wireless mice tend to "lag" behind when fast moving, so:

OPTICAL + WIRE = TEH WIN.

Unless other people WITH wireless have better experiences....

i use an mx duo, (logitech, MX700 wireless optical mouse and wireless Elite keyboard)

I dont feel any latency at all, and anyone who has snuck up behind me and gotten one bite in before i shotgun them to hell and back can tell you that.

most mouse latency in HL is actually due to rendering problems, i remember in my old GF1 days i had massive problems with the controlls lagging some seconds behind. If you have problems with a new optical/wireless mouse, before you give up on it try changing your rendering settings (turning on Vsync or changing between direct3d and opengl rendering for starters) and then check your drivers. because like i said. new optical mice dont have to "twitch" and new wireless mice dont have to lag .

and of course dont forget the benifits of not having a wire in your way constantly...

oh, one more thing: if you have a logitech mouse, i (and many other people for that matter) advise you to NOT install their mouse drivers.. 80% of the time they do more harm then good, logitech makes good hardware, but their software department is a bunch of noobs.

I have a Microsoft Intelimouse Optical. It's a 5 button mouse of doom - I recommend it to anyone .
I've had it 2 years now, possibly more, in that time it has still served me well. It's razor sharp with accuracy, and has yet to do anything that "optical mice do wrong".
It's also wired and USB. Many don't realise the benefits of a USB mouse over a PS2 mouse, for starters, It's a lot faster.

As for mousewheel things, I have fastswitch on, and mousewheelup bound to slot 3, mousewheel down to slot 1.
Go figure what that enables me to do ;D

A google search pretty much eliminates the whole 'wireless lag' theory in most cases for a MX1000, which is pretty cool - though I did read one particularly bad review stating with evidence that it was laggy, so I dunno.

Then again, I read five reviews (on the one page) about FFXI:Online sucking, yet could never find a bad review about it after, so still unsure on whether to buy that or not too o.O

All in all, optical will work, but if you have some money to spend I'd get a MX1000 instead, as it uses a laser instead of a LED and camera - 20x more accurate and works on almost any surface (even mirrors, though they don't guaruntee it).

I'm using a mx510 and LogiGamer which allows u to enable all 8 buttons to be used in NS. It works like a charm. I higly recommend that u use LogiGamer if u've got one of the newer logitech mouse. It allows you to set all sorts of individual settings for differant games and auto applies them when the game starts. Check it out.

Wow, that LogiGamer app is just what I've been looking for. Mad props yo.

MX510 is so sexy. Buy one. Today. Steal the money.

20x more accurate being meaningless unless you try to use your cat as a mousepad or somesuch idiocy. You might as well save your money and get a normal one of their opticals, as it will perform identically.

mx 300-900 all have the same mx sensor and have the same speed without lag, wired mice are just 'unoticeable' faster then a wireless one unless you get a bluetooth one.

I use a logitech mx500 and its the best mouse I've owned thusfar. but even predescesors of the mx optical sensors (this includes none logitech to ofcourse) dont lag, they do however sometimes have tracking erros if you move the mouse VERY fast...

btw dont get a razor boomslang (which is a best game mouse ever wannabe) they break far to easy in a matter of weeks...

My next mous is prollly gonnah be a laser tracking mouse

No, I think he did. Said "guy" who will not be named, had been making numberous whines and was all over me for being one of those people who oppose the existance of the blockscripts cvar. Later we all went on to talk about other things and I posted a link to this thread about optical mice to answer someone else's question and he piped up said the above... that's why it's so funny. It proves the stupidity in a laughable way

Anyways... so is there a way increase or overclock the refresh rate of your optical mouse such that you can get better tracking and thus have easier time to aim at moving objects? I'm thinking you'll need to have a USB or USB2.0 mouse as PS/2 is fixed.

IF you use PS/2 mice you can double the 'fixed' refresh rate up to 200. It was a utility that even worked its way into the official Logitech drivers a while back.

But even the most humble of USB optical mice can blow that rate away, obviously.
