A BIG thank you to the person who helped me solve the gamma problem! (you know who you are)

As for those of you who know how to do nothing except scream about cheating, I got news for ya: "gamma cheating" is a phrase that does not exist. It's laughable! You are the probably the same group of guys that scream at everyone who jumps in the Comm chair besides you.

The lockout of gamma controls with the introduction of Steam / NS was unintentional. It was never intended to prevent "cheating". It's in the official NS bug list, bug #483.

http://www.natural-selection.org/bt/bug_vi...?bug_id=0000483

So just to spread the help around here is the solution using Powerstrip, since the solution is not easily found:

How to make powestrip work with steam NS?

Go to application profile configuration in powerstrip (right click ps icon and you will see it), select "hl.exe" as an appliction shortcut to monitor, then select "monitor keyboard controller for hotkeys" from list on the right..

When you save this, you will be able to change gamma using powerstrip as usually :-)

Without this, I can't even see the splash screen!

Nemisis, you might as well lock this topic out before the cheating whiners start in.

Are you the person that was whining about having insanly low gamma and couldnn't see a thing and was planning on leaving ns if they didn't unlock gamma controls

Nice to know you finally got your gamma working, now be nice and don't play with it excessively high. I was under the impression that the gamma lock was intentional, being that it was in the changelog and all, but if it is considered a bug, all the same. You just so happen to be absolutly wrong about people not using high gamma to cheat, as it is entirely doable and easy, and many people use such doable easy things to thier own advantage when they get the chance, so to say that it is never used for cheating is just ludicrous, although I certianly won't chastize you for pumping up your gamma just to the point where the game is playable...

WOW 10 minutes and already 4 responses LOL

    yes same guy.

And as for giving up on NS, well, if you can't SEE the game, you can't PLAY the game. Not much choice in the matter. But now that I can SEE it, I can PLAY it again for the first time since the begining of the year. Happy Day!

lovely stuff. I dunno what going on recently but i have been having some strange *problems* with my NS. Unless i have installed some 1337 h4x without knowing i see to be able to see cloacked players. Im playing on a laptop with screen brightness on full and if i look towards a cloacked player on a fairly light map like eclipse i can see the outline of the player with very very muted colour. Although this doesn't make alot of difference because i can only usually see it if im looking for it or a damn big onos.

Anyone else having the same sorta thing?
The only thing i have changed from the default Beta 5 Install is the jetpack fuel guage sprite.

You know you can change lightgamma.....

Yeah I noticed that they seem to be easier to see in this build. Especially in lerk gas they stand out like a sore thumb. I can even pick out non moving ones quite a bit.

good good not just me hacking and not knowing it. Spores and umbra make anything cloaked so so easy to see. I find that aliens stood still are easier to see than moving ones.

it seems like only lambert or other things [which can't be done in the engine by the way] through hooks make them show up better

It's the same in terms of difficulty unless you adjust your gamma so dark that you can't see them anyways

All my crap is on default and sometimes I see em, sometimes I dont.
If im actively thinkin about cloakers and pay attention, I can spot them.
But damn, that cloaking is freaky. ive had them cloak right in front of me and had i not seen it, ida never known they were there.
Anyways, I need to look into gamma settings for my bro.
his comp is so dark, you cant even watch mpgs and what not.

I just want to point out that as shortly as 4 monthes ago a mention of someone using powerstrip for any function whatsoever would have brought the anti-hack segment of the NS community to arms. Good job NS community, nice to see you grow

I think maybe you might want to read about what PowerStrip is. It's a display tuner and overclocker. Unless there's some sort of bug with PS that I don't know of.
