Nearly any modern computer will work as a dedicated server. What distribution of Linux were you planning to use?

I don't know, any distro will be fine. For example also a slackware or a debian.

Will be enough a celeron 550?

How much ram do you suggest?

    Thanks for the reply.

    256 RAM should be decent
for an HD, i would very highly recommend using a 7200 RPM HD

Celeron 550 would be ok for a small server 12 players, max 16, but for anything higher than that you might want a faster CPU, or better architecture, i.e. more Intel P or AMD Athlon.

As Vadakill said any modern box would be decent to run a server on. Your problem might arise from the amount of upstream you have, and the network equipment.

If you ISP provides you with good upstream, anything above 100 kbps, would be good for a small server. Some ISP will provide their clients with upstream higher than 500 kbps, now on that you would be able to run a bigger server.

The reason why I mentioned network hardware as well is because, my ISP provides me with 256kbps, but my network router’s upstream is facture caped far below my ISP’s upstream limits. This causes problems for me when I try to run a server for my clan.

A celeron 550 is on the extreme low end for processors. You could conceiveably run one combat server but, I highly doubt you'd be able to run a NS Classic server with any player satisfaction. The low speed combined with the low processor cache memory makes this an undesirable processor for half-life dedicated servers these days.

Slackware or Debian Sarge is fine for servers, make sure you do not run a GUI (KDE/Gnome), do it all command line to leave resources for the HLDS server process.

256MB Ram is fine, more is always better but not required.

Your upstream should be a stable 256kbps for a 10-12 player server, bandwidth requirments scale up from there.

    Many thanks for the reply.

So it is better that i find something better.

Celeron 933 with 300+mb ram should do the trick :-) Right?

    dont use celeron.

    celeron is not for gameserver.

use athlon. one 1600+ with 512 must be enough.
maybee 256 ram also. (but i am not 100% sure).

I have this spare computer :-)

I know that celeron sucks but i have no option. I have a line always at work, and a this old pc at home.

But i suppose it should be enough for a small server. right?

    Sure?

    Ok thanks.

Do you know if the server runs good on Linspire?

It is a very good price for italian market.

    Anyway we can re-install Debian.

CPU is enough and i think RAM is also enough.

On this constelation u can run a 14 slot server
    !! without anything else !!
    dont run webservices or databases

    i dont know

on a athlon +2400 (512 MB RAM) ns map 14 slot = 75~80% CPU Usage. linux server + database

maybee 2000 without anything else, same result
