Teamwork is key for Marines. Without it, the Aliens will hand you your HMG on a titanium platter made from your empty Heavy Armor.

Last night, in ns_nothing, 4v4, my Marines stuck together, rarely got killed, and finished the map with a decisive victory. There were a few moments where we could have lost it, but my team stuck together and no-one went for glory.

My strategy for most maps is roughly the following:

1) skulk-resist the base
2) secure 1st resource using Marines as cover
3) skulk-resist 1st resource
4) secure 1st Hive and resource in Hive
5) upgrade to HMGs and portals
6) secure new resources and Fade-resist everything
7) upgrade to Heavy Armor and Grenade launcher (1)
8) make an all-out assault on one of the 2 remaining Hives
9) take Hive and game is over

Key to all of this is the teamwork involved in doing things such as:

1) welding each other
2) always having 1 or more marines cover as the others build
3) always having the HMGs cover the grenade launcher
4) dropping med-packs on the Marines as soon as they are hit
5) decreasing the travel time of your squad, thereby increasing
the percentage of time your Marines are doing useful actitivies

With Heavy Armor, welder, med-packs, and teamwork, a squad of Marines
can take anything down short of a herd of Oni (plural form of Onos).

On the other hand, a sure path to defeat is a having 1 or more Marines
charge off alone as soon as they get an HMG. The Marines have got to
keep cool heads and know when to hold their fire.

So, as commander, make sure the 1st thing your get across is that your
team MUST stick together and support each other at all times. 90% of
the time, you should have your squad selected so that you can see their
health and drop med-packs on them. Your job is to keep them from getting
killed.

Select your units by left clicking(default) on them.

You can left click on one, or hold down left click and drag a box to select a group.

Once you have selected your Marine(s), right click on

- empty location to give way point
- new buildings to give build order
- etc

Generally once you have selected your Marine(s), right click on anywhere on the map to give them way points.

Press spacebar(default key for 'jump') to have the map instantly zoomed to the last event that took place.

ie.
- Soldier needs ammo
- Soldier needs health
- Sentries under attack
- Sentries firing
- etc

Unfortunately, it's not the best idea to learn how to be a commander on a pub server, because it hurts the team.

However, you can create a LAN game so that you can practice building stuff and getting used to the commands. Just be sure to use cheats so the game allows you to build structures when there's nobody on your team. The cheats are stickied in the Server Operation forums (right over here)

You use the icons in the corner of the screen to create structures, weapons, health and such. The tech tree for required buildings is somewhere in the manual, under buildings. You should read to make sure you know what buildings do what.

The manual does have a whole section on commanding, though. Go to Frontiersman Data > Commanding.

If you're a commander at the very start of the game, remember to build an infantry portal first thing, so that people who die can respawn. You should browse around on the boards for more commander strategies.

Hope this is somewhat helpful.
