Full Health Restored When Upgrading?

ReavzReavz Join Date: 2002-11-02 Member: 4130Members

bug or a nice bit of strategy?
Well, I was running around as a skulk once in the early stages of the map and aciddently ran into the marine base. The turrets made me lose about 40-50 hp and I ran away. Around the corner I decided to cloak so I could have atleast some chance of surviving with my low HP. I was cloaked just as normal but now I had my full health back.. and it only cost me 2 resources and took 5 seconds! I was able to get a few cheap bites off the marines that were coming out and got a kill or 2.

The point of the post is that i was wondering if this was a bug of some sort? If this was done as an onos or fade they could restore their large health (and armour) very quickly with no defense chambers around.
I usually leave the sensory upgrade "open" so i can perform this trick, as I don't see cloaking or the other sens. upgrades a necessity (as opposed to the carapace and adrenaline I usually take).

I use it as a nice trick, when I remember. I guess it makes sense though - when the bacterium is evolving an alien, it wouldnt make sense to evolve into a flawed alien..

well if people dont think its a bug, guess ill carry on using it...
also if you use use upgrade when you are a gorg all your resources will be lost up to the point of the normal aliens (33 for one hive, 66 for two...) That happened to me once when I had 69 resources saved for the 2nd hive and I had to start all over again (from 33)...

that was a fast reply btw

I think it's fair because when you gestate, you are a helpless immobile blob of goo for 10-20 seconds. If you haven't checked out your area carefully theres a chance a marine could some and knife kill you.

i consider it a feature. Think about it: you go into a cocoon, your body gets dissassembled, and then reassembled (with some resource input). If I were a cocoon, i sure as hell wouldn't reassemble a half dead alien. Would YOU?

On the balance side i think it makes sense too, seeing as you leave yourself COMPLETELY vulnerable for about 10 seconds. Come to think of it, what are the stats of a cocoon, hp and armor?? never seen that anywhere. From the number of times i've been killed while gestating, i'd say its somewhere between a skulk and a fade, more towards the skulk side. Maybe 100 (hp + armor) or so?

    hmm

I've evolved as a gorge, gone down to 33, and then it went back up to 60-something, but I couldn't say if this was because I was on 60-something before or because we had so many resource nodes occupied that it went up quickly...

Unless Flayra says so I'd consider as not a bug. It makes sense given the backstory to the aliens thats in the manual.. and its the only insta-heal the aliens get, while the marines get the flying health packages of handiness.

I THINK i seen it one time when i started to gestate. I seen 200hp. Now i might have been just mistaken but i swear for a split second i saw it.

Could a DEV let us in on this little secret maybe.

One time this marine found me gestating and commenced to knife my helpless pulsing body. But lo and behold, at the last moment I spawned as a fade and cackled as I chopped him to bits! Mwahahahaaaaaaaa!

Its 200 health, 80 armour I think. I see it flash every time I evolve.
  • FossaFossa Join Date: 2002-11-04 Member: 6931Members
That is the health and armor you have well in the cocoon. When you come out your health and armor is full for whatever species you are.

I do it all the time. It's a godsend when you are in the middle of nowhere with Marines roaming all over the place. Simply hop/crawl your way into a vent and evolve some upgrade and you're back and ready to roll. It's also a balancing thing as the others have said.. you are left vulnerable for a pretty long time.

It also encourages aliens to fight without full upgrades. I know I often enter a battle with just carapace but come out fully upgraded.

At full Carapace, it's 200/150. That makes me think you've got the Fade base.

But it doesn't matter much really if you're in there for longer than an upgrade and a Marine comes by.

    BTW, you can gestate cloaked.

I once had a marine start shooting me when I was 75% done gestating into an onos... Damage taken while gestating doesn't change your hp when you come out. Needless to say he was pretty surprised

I think it's a strategy more than anything. Reason? Two things mentioned already, the gestation time (completely defenseless and time comsuming) and it plays with your resource pool. This may be why the DEV team didn't allow the upgrades to be swapped or improved.

I think they should at least change that. It would make more sense if you came out half-damaged. Otherwise there is no punishment for gestating in a bad place if the marine can't kill you in time.

That would be like scratching a chicken egg and having a scarred chick come out. The egg is there for protection and if you kill the egg, then you automaticly kill the thing(s) inside (there are some exceptions but I won't go into those)

I knida wish we could "devolve" our upgrades. Except it should cost anywhere from 2x-5x the orginial cost to "give back" your upgrade (and lose its ablities). Then you can grow into another type of upgraded alien and still pay the 2 RPs.

that be nice but instead just change your upgrade with a longer time of upgrade (2x) and cost of 2x.

I find that de-evolving to like a skulk shouldnt cost RPs... but meh, its the game, and its fine to me...

I have no idea to think about this... the alien would come out all hurt and stuff but... i just dont know... maybe if they like... nah... screw it... i dont care is it gets changed or not... lol

I dunno bout anyone else, but everytime i've been discovered while gestating, its meant my death. 200/80 goes down REAL quick when you cant dodge or attack back.

I know I for one would like a way to "give back" upgrades...I take Celerity when I'm Skulking then suddenly I want Adrenaline when I've moved up to Gorge or Lerk or Fade, and I don't feel like dying.

It doesn't necessarily make "game" sense. It could be that way, but isn't it possible that a damaged alien's biological systems would be too damaged to make a perfect copy? Not just on some scientific level- because aliens don't necessarily have to "obey" our biological laws. So there would be a feasible explanation either way. It's up to Flayara and the dev team to decide on the game side.

Balance-wise, it does seem to be a bit excessive. I know that I've bugged the hell out of marines when I upgrade twice, and within 2 minutes its essentially three Onos they have to deal with. And if you know the map well enough, it's not hard to find a secluded spot that's difficult to find for JUST TEN SECONDS. On top of that, there's the resource issue- 2 to upgrade, or however many chambers to heal as fast, at 14 per chamber. Sure, you can only use it three times, but that's definitely a large side benefit. And no, it isn't even the primary advantage- the primary advantage is the upgrade itself. When the side effects are valued more than the point of the upgrade itself, it's a fairly over-powerful tactic, imho.
