A Fresh Look At Jazz
Linkage

My high school's Wind Ensemble (which I'm in, Trombone) will be playing this song for our competition season this year, and we just got our first look at the music. All I can say is OMG pwn. Just thought I'd get the opinion of some of the muscians in the forums. (I believe there are a few out there) What do you think of it? Keep in mind, it's a long song, so you might want to skip through the intro parts and into the middle if you want to hear the cool stuff. If anything it's a nice song to listen to for some of the instrumental music fans out there. Who says high school bands have to suck. :-P Hope you enjoy it. (this isn't our band playing it of course, this is a college band I believe)

meh not that great, its average really. It wouldve been much cooler if it had a lot more jazz aproach other than basically 1 section blazing out 1 measure each time. and having someone playing the harmony.

    Its really not that intriguing

but tenor madness is suprising intriguing

That's the thing though, it's not suppose to be jazz per se. There's no 8th note swing except for a few parts (mainly towards the end) and there are no typical 12 bar Jazz licks anywhere. Actually it's more Blues than Jazz, (hence the name) should've clarified that in my first post though. As far as harmony goes, I agree with you that some parts could be better with a little more harmony, especially in some of the middle parts when the main melody comes through, overall though I think it's better without too much harmony though because of the small size of our Wind Ensemble and the fact that the song is only made for about 40 people to play, you need to have those individual parts sticking through.

West Side Story? Now that you mention it, it does have the same kind of feeling in spots, just without the lame story.

Yup, most are as long as they're played correctly, I just happen to like this one alot, gives us T-Bones a chance to showoff and not be sucked under by the hoards of woodwinds, like those damn tenor saxes.

I know blue shades, I've got a score of it lying around my house somewhere. I think it's a pretty interesting piece... but personally I never really liked "classical-jazz crossovers." What I mean by this is that jazz is inherently.. personal, and alietoric (changes every time it's played). I.E. the jazz player can play with the melody as he plays it... and also the whole idea of solos.
In classical music, everything is written down on paper, and it must be played exactly in time and with the right notes (of course, how else are you going to coordinate 52 people in a band?). The conductor tells you what tempo to take, etc, instead of the players doing that.
That said, ticheli does do a pretty cool job in exploring a lot of different avenues of jazz with this piece. IMO, it's much better than another jazz crossover piece, "Three city blocks" by John Harbison. Listen to that for some cool stuff, but Blue Shades is better.
BTW, isn't there a crazy bass clarinet solo in there or something?

    Oh and

oh man, you have no idea how bad band music can get. In the olden days, good composers wrote for symphony orchestra, because musical education was not as widespread as it is today.... but now, every fool can write something for concert band and it'll probably be premiered by some high school. those pieces demonstrate a profound lack of musical integrity and knowledge, yet they get played anyway. Example: anything by david holsinger.

Heading into the slow section there's a bass clarinet solo, though it's not what I would call crazy, it's more dark. You might be talking about the clarinet/oboe solo (either instrument can play it, personally I think it sounds better with the oboe because of the higher pitch; it makes those high notes at the end of the solo sounds really high) which is one of my favorite parts of the song.
