The New Jetpack..

..vacuum or blender?
There's been alot of arguing on many of the servers I've been to since beta5. As some of you know, the jetpack has a new sound. What people can't seem to agree on is exactly what it is.. a vacuum or a blender?

I happen to be one of the blender people myself.

We know from the manual that the jetpack shoots out superheated air with the help of some turbine contraption. The new sound is likely that little turbine zipping around, much like a blender does.

-Vacuums suck.
-Jetpacks blow.
-Blenders pureé things (like you'll be doing to Hives with that shotgun, you invincible bastard)

Go ahead. Get out your vacuum and your blender. Which sounds more like the jetpack? Yea, it's not your Hoover, buddy.

"Comm, drop Cuisinarts!"

Heh, MaXX told me the new JP sound comes from a recording of a real jetpack (you know, one of the things shown at the World Expo a dozen years ago). Foiled by reality once again.

You forgot to mention that real life jetpacks are rubbish

Jetpacks should sound more like the ones in tribes imo.

"Real" jetpacks are basically just Dyson hoovers with a seat-belt, so it sounds like a REAL jetpack AND a hoover. Wow.

Of course if you don't like the sounds, you can always cut 'n' paste replace them with the ones from 3.4 that are in your NSP folder...

I feel that the sound is too bright and missing lots of bass. Should make it denser so you can hear its power.

it's so irritating i couldn't stand to listen to it so i replaced it with the previous jetpack sound

now i can't join half of the servers on my server list because they have consistency on and jetpack.wav is checked for consistency for whatever ungodly reason

    hooray

Not to bash the new sounds but everyone has their own opinions and favorites. Is it possible to set code in an option for next beta where you can choose new lmg sound/old lmg sound, new jp/old jp, etc in a menu or something?
  • TastyTasty Join Date: 2003-08-05 Member: 18988Members, Constellation
The new JP sounds like a blender, with a spoon stuck in it. That high pitched wine was way too annoying so i replaced it with the old sound, so no problem there.

Does anyone like the new sound better than the old one? That high-pitched whine is so piercing, I don't want to be critical but this is one of those "WTH? who thought this was a good idiea?" moments.

Or maybe it's just me, could we have a poll on new vs. old JP sounds?

While it'd be interesting, it will not be necessary from a dev point of view.

Rue, the welder sounds had to be changed to bring them up to speed with its new functionality, which had been requested, numerous times.

    Ok, then...
The sound is very weird like this old vaccuuuuum I have. Why was the sound changed in the first place?

We all on LoC agreed it sounded like a vacuum.
That guy's right, it needs less treble more bass, and exactly how would you get a proper sound sample from a real jetpack? No way you could mount a mic near it, it would melt, and its an annual expo so if you get a bad rec you have to wait a year before another attempt. It'd be like getting a sound sample of a nuclear explosion... the mic would have to be too far to get any detailed sound.

And the new welder+sound=Love. I weld everything I can just to hear the cool sound.

i like the welder sounds aswell the jetpack is just unusual but still pretty neat

The welder sound is absolute awesomesauce. Seriously; you KNOW when you're done welding something. Absolutly perfect. No more 98% comm chairs because the last few percent don't show up on the health bar.

Aside from that, you're wrong, sir. Vaccums do not suck. They simply move air. By this virtue, the place where the air is being pulled from seems to suck, but the force is quite the opposite. The air pressure around the nozzle is actually forcing objects in, rather then the other way around. Strange, but true.
By the same token, I'm sure there's an intake valve somewhere on the JP (even if it's not visible), and that has to suck. The side that's set to "blow" simply has a fuel injector/ignitor on it, thus giving it further thrust.

So, even if you say nanites.. it's still a vacuum. Not a blender.

    LOL!

i also like the wielder sound change, and the jp sounds too.

I actually don't mind the new jetpack sound. I think I can actually hear the old one playing under it, so it's like.. twice as loud, and thus alot easier for me to gauge where that bugger is when I'm playing Lerk. It revs up and slows down too, so you know where they are even after they've stopped flying. Audio tracking is leet.

As for the new welder, I like it. It's not so much the different sounds, but the fact that you can now tell whether or not you're actually hitting someone/thing. You could be welding that heavy for five more seconds that you need to, or hitting the air right infront of him. RTs and comm chairs actually have life left to be restored when the all the green bars come back, so how do you know (except from experience and timing) when it's fully healed? The new sounds tell you.
