The way I see it, a MMO/MMORPG is defined as an MMO in consideration of the number of people that significantly interact with eachother over the period of time that you play. If this isn't very clear, let me explain with neat imagery!
A "proper" mmo, by Doom's standards [btw i disagree], wouldnt have more than 200 people at a time on your screen that you could even identity, max. What does it matter if it's 2000 people on a single server the size of 10 maps, or 2000 people on the 10 servers the size of a normal map? You're not going to see all of them at the same time or within a reasonable time frame or even within any physical means that would justify having it on one superserver [in normal, FPS mmo's].
I'm sorry if i'm not making much sense, i was watching Zladko and i'm kind of mentally occupied, not focusing much or being as coherent as i would have liked. Nevertheless, one more try at sentient thought:
The difference between a single-server MMO and a cluster of servers, or even one server per map, is very slim in playing conditions if the mmo-makers have any brain cells. So essentially, DOOM i think you are just having a whinge.
#1 - DONT play Knight Online. I've played it, and i spent <b>THREE 8 HOUR DAYS, IN REAL-TIME</b> and i didn't even get outside the main city. Their leveling system is totally whack; you have something like 80-100 Str as a fighter, and some of the starting equipment requires something like 160 Str to weild, and it's nothing more then a morning star or some sort of axe. And you only get 5 points to disribute among your stats every level. And the AI/Lag is absolutely horrendous. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo--> Durring those three 8 hour days, i was dropped <i>five</i> times, and i have a absolutely beasty connection and computer...
#2 - PlaneShift (not PlanetShift, you're getting confused with PlanetSide) is and should remain a free MMO, however, it's still not even near a 'Beta' stage... Still massive problems with the server and "link dead" issues.
#3 - Finding a FREE MMO, and having that MMO STAY free is like finding a actual gold coin in real life. They just dont happen that often, and when they do, they often dont stick around for that long of a time. Like RuneScape (Another MMO that you should avoid... nothing more then a money-making scheme by some Java coder... get hooked on the free version then step up to the P2P version -- which is still the same thing, you just get more skills, killables, and places to go; but still the same as the free version) what may seem great at first quickly becomes a "Ugh, why the hell did i waste 'x' months of my life playing this crap?!"
If you find a free MMO with a decent development team, good ballance, good pings, and excellent - continually refreshing, is what i mean here - gameplay, tell me; I'll check if hell's frozen over.

Linked servers != one gigantic server w/ everyone in it. Hell if they could be seperate servers, then technically Quake 1 was an MMO game, because if one server was full just hop to the next one...
It seems every online RPG is wanting to slap "MMO" on the label to gain popularity, rather than actually knowing/caring what it means. Much like how most mods slap "beta" on their releases... But that's a different rant.
I think that just normal servers playing the same game don't count. But when they're actually linked, in-game and the gameplay flows on from the previous server, then yes it applies. It would be treated as just a load section for another part of the map, which is hosted on a different address for speed reasons. It's the same game, but a different part of it [assumed not distributed].
Yes, i know, "MMOG". But technically, unless you have a thousand people simultaneously [or within a reasonable timeframe] interacting with or around you on a significant level, neither are most of the "technically" MMO, MMOGs or MMORPGs.
I'm not arguing with the notion that a lot of games are slapping the MMO brand on as just a market advertising slogan, but it seems like you're putting down a lot of these valid, promising MMO's just for the sake of being angry.
Technically Quake 1 was an MMO. Massively Multiplayer Online game. The term isn't related to the amount of physical servers - it only means its a game with almost exclusively multiplayer in mind, that you better not buy for SP. And they intend on having tons of players.
You're all confusing this with <b>persistent worlds</b>, which most MMOGs use. The term is self-explanatory and refers to anything your character says and does as well as the world being uniquely saved together with every other player.
And whoever said "THOU SHALT NOT HAVE MORE THAN ONE SERVER CLUSTER". Please, do yourself a favor and go play twister with yourself on a highway.
I'll go out on a leg and say <a href='http://conqueronline.com/' target='_blank'>Conquer Online</a>
Veleran on Eagle server and Haisho on Dragon server.
Haven't played much Conquer though since a) Teh quests are le useless b) It's riddled with Engrish c) Your general playerbase is 'OMG PK/KS/etc!' and nubfaec who sit on your well earned items.
My sister plays as Thea on Eagle server, so if you're looking for her to team up and power level/kill her/drop her some ubar rare item then err...go to Eagle server.

I think that you can't play on the CS:S servers with lots of people, because the server operators don't seem to understand that they need to use better servers than the ones for normal CS. It's the same with NS, you can't use an average CS server, or it will lag.
Oh yea, by brother loves <a href='http://www.runescape.com/' target='_blank'>Runescape </a>for one reason or other. I never played it though, so I don't know about it...
It's browser based, so you don't even have to d/l anything.
Most MMOs run multiple servers in the same world doomeh... that's part of the reason many games are split into multiple maps with a cluster of them being stored on seperate servers =3 The 'shards' you choose in most games are merely the login servers.
I think I read somewhere the true definition of MMO is 450 or more players in a persistant 'world'.
Anyways... free MMOs? That are decent? hmmm... lol can't think of any ^^; If anyone finds one though do tell =D
does anyone know if this game is free? <a href='http://laghaim.e-games.com.my/EngLaghaim.asp' target='_blank'>http://laghaim.e-games.com.my/EngLaghaim.asp</a>

32 players in one area is not massive. Neither is 64 or even 128. Large certainly, but not massive.
