What does NS going to steam have to do with NS itself changing?
• UEACobraUEACobra Join Date: 2004-05-20 Member: 28800Members
well, first of all, about half the ppl stopped playing ns because steam wouldnt work, then ns started updateing to v3.0 adding map changes and combat and everything else, im not saying its all bad, but you dont see many of the maps that used to be played, half of the ns maps are never played anymore, and they were good maps

All the bug fixes they have done is good.

Combat is bad, as its ment that clasic NS needs to be some what dumbed down to allow combat players to make the jump from CO to NS.

Most of the changes have been to try and get more people to play ns, make it more of a pick-up-and-play game rather than what it was in version 1.0. Back in the "good old days" it needed some sort of team work to work well on public games. Remeber when the scoreboard was hidden? That stoped alot of people playing only for frag's and worked more as a team.

Anyway this has been said a 100 times before and its not going to be changes back to play like old versions because the dev are trying to push NS "forward".

I remember version 1 being fun for a while, then the jetpack/hmg rushes happened every game and it was no longer fun.

The "Good 'ol days" were when NS was original. Admitedly it's no longer so original and anybody who has been playing it for two years can admit that. Like you said, you were playing it for two days. In the first days of NS it is an amazing game, and you're in awe of the huge maps, commander, alien lifeforms and techniques, but after a while that whole atmosphere becomes lost on you.

NS is changing a lot yes, but the Dev's gotta give us fanboys something to get excited about now and again, some sort of variety in the game. While i disagree with some of the changes that have been made nobody can deny NS has made real progress recently, with gameplay changes, bug fixes and new maps.

Stories from the old days of NS? Ah now that's another tale for another time

Only thing I miss about my 1.0x days were the communities I was involved with then that no longer play NS. I'm glad the game is changing, since I feel that unless the game is changed around, gameplay just becomes tiring and stale. While we tend to expect alot of these folks in terms of releases, I find that updates to this mod are more frequent than many commercial games I play (Not to mention other mods). Sure, mistakes are made in releases, but if the community whines (and gives feedback) loudly enough, and reasonably enough, these get fixed.

Perhaps the game, when it reaches that "perfect balance" (if that's even possible), won't become stale after a month or two of playing, but until then updates now and then keep things fresh. You have to wonder if some people are dissatisfied because the changes made to the mod are unbalancing, or just because the mod is changing, and they don't want to adapt. I could make a lame joke about NS and natural selection, but I won't.

Heh I do miss the whole seventeen-day-long epic games, but to be honest NS has had so many improvements its ALMOST been worth the change.

Combat IS fun also, if you only have a few minutes to play you can quickly join and blow up some skulks, leave and no one gives a damn. It is also fun to experiment with all the different alien abilities.

I honestly don't see why everyone has so much against Combat - the only bad thing I can think of is changes effecting Classic as well (If i got that right). Leave it alone.

EDIT: Obviously Classic will always be better though

I miss the good old days of 1.01 where you filled every hallway with turrets and fades couldn't blink without getting stuck in walls.

Marines were marines and aliens were slimey, every team chat ended with a smiely, the comm could be high and the marines still wouldn't die, exploiting vents no one could resist, one onos and marines ceased to exist, when you could jetpack for days and aliens could still use your phase....those weeeeeeeeere the daaaaaaaaaaays.

Let gorges count as 3 people for res. 33max res per hive, only gorges go to 100.
No onos till 3rd hive.
Now that was fun.
• dr_ddr_d Join Date: 2003-03-28 Member: 14979Members
Yep that was actually some of the best gameplay I can remember. 1 perma gorge followed around by 2-3 skulk bodyguards getting RTs and saving for hives. I still think they should give chained evolves another go but hey I'm in the minority.

Games were so much more interesting back then, people actually tried things and sometimes oulled off amazing moments.

don't misunderstand me, I'm playing NS since 2.0 got out and I absolutely love it. But I first started with CS Beta 5.1 and I used to love CS. Look at what it is now!

I can't stand CS anymore. But not because they changed too much (heck, they didn't even change much of the weapons, let alone the maps), but because playing CS in the early days was much more exiting and special than it is now.

I even remember the old C&C 1 times: I hate C&C generals and I wish I could play a LAN game against some friends with C&C 1 again!

It's all just nostalgy. Even if you COULD game old games again the way you used to, it wouldn't be the same.

2.01 was a pretty good version.

Anyways I never have cared for combat. And the NS teams reason for keeping it arround as a bridge is a weak argument because personally, I didn't come to ns from TFC and DoD so I could have another team deathmatch game. Um no. I liked the fact that is was a highly indepth game, with sexy maps, and tha tis was an RTS in a FPS world.

partialy due to the same reason my clan is off and on NS. We used to be around alot in 1.04... but now with combat, theres alotv rude ****, like to script everything and are not very nice to newbie players... What ever happend to the good old days where if there was a new player... YOUD KICK HIM OUT OF THE FREAKIG COMM CHAIR, but would show him the map, and the alien players would be polite to the poor guy. All you see now is "OMG HE WAS PWNED" the co_ aspect has added an unwelcomed dark aspect to the game I find somewhat sad. Our server, Voogru's server and many other old large pubs has off and on periods with old school mentality and the new abrasive CS type mentality... Its quite depressing sometimes and makes you wana scream. I do miss the old nice days.

Guys just screw combat. The 2.01 engine was just fine when I ran my server on WON. Even had those little "whichbots" installed. (damn they pwned as skulk up close and sucked at anything else) But seriously. You don't need a llama team DM mode to keep NS new and exciting. Team DM = TFC. Duh...

So I say screw the CO and increase other things like:

more maps
more weapons/abilities
more structures
more tech tree!
-- oh wait we can't ahve a larger tech tree because our sprites on the hud wouldn't fit. Well stupid then make em' smaller. *gasp* It can't be that simple. No way dude. I be der webbernet and can't thinsorz straight. oorgle. bleat bleat. Braaaaawr.
more music
more classes!?
-- no Kharaa are too stupid to have evolve more classes even though they can mass mound of chambers and evolve at insaine biological rates
and
but
not
least
Put NS on the HL2 engine

Do you know how drop-dead gorgious NS would be on that engine? I mean we already got CS on the HL2 engine but we all know that NS is the sexiest of the HL1 mods. Just look at the maps if nothing else. I mean it's hard to imagine NS on the HL2 engine maybe for some of you but look at the increase in CS alone. Look at the physics man! I mean well be having onos toss marines arround in the air when they charge like rag dolls. Facial expressions! I mean it's funny as hell if some one goes arround with a ridiculous grin on their face. Or maybe I'll go running arround with one hand on the gun an the otehr giving everyone the finger. Vehicles. I can't wait to assault the hive in a spacefighter or drive my squad arround in a warthog. So don't dispair NS people, just throttle Valve by their lazy necks until we get the engine and get those other suggestion of increases in and combat off. Then NS is frikin golden.

Yeah, the most popular game-type is horrible.

Who says that any combat players want to "take the jump" from CO to NS. Maybe that's the problem, not the fact that CO is fun, while NS is not.

Easy there killer.
Anyway there's some issues that I'd like to state with the NS ON HL2 WOULD OWN LOLZ
1. The mapping limits will probably still be there or "barely" extended. From what I've gathered about how mods are easy to convert and levels just need to be recompiled. HL2 is just HL1 except now we got havok physics and ragdoll and some higher resolution textures. Mark my words this engine isn't fantastic by any stretch of the imagination.
Facial Animations? We can't even get our marines with movable mouths or 3rd person reload anims. You honestly think we'll get emotions on faces ? Dream On
Vehicles in NS *shudder*. Vehicles don't make gameplay fun. It falls under the overused gimmick category same with ragdoll and soon to be manipulating physics with some absurd gun.

There's a few things NS needs.
1. An expanded and revamped tech tree
2. A radical change to the main NS classic gameplay something like this http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/in...showtopic=79263 would be a terrific start.

Also on the Combat vs Classic debate. Combat is fun because you're not dependant on your team and you don't have 5 idiots screaming at you to drop DC's so they can rush fade in 5 minutes only to be blasted to bits by shotguns and jetpacks.
Classic is stagnant, dull and boring. A mere shadow of what is was in 1.0 and 2.0. Sadly combat is heading down this path aswell. The game is losing its luster and not even NS on the HL2 engine can save it unless they rethink the gameplay.
