Experiencing Ladder Trouble (?)

<div class="IPBDescription">Cant climb ladders like I used to...</div> Hey all,

Someone just explained to me how vsync works and how to fix the 60 FPS cap using "refresh lock" program ... now I get a solid 100 FPS. I'm on a cable connection so the combination of low ping and high frame rate is great. I cant believe I stuck with 60 FPS for so long thinking that my system just couldnt pump out any higher numbers.

However, now I have a problem. I cant climb any ladders as an alien just by walking up to one and climbing up. The game refuses to allow the connection to the bottom part of the ladder. If I run and jump and attach to some point int he middle of the ladder I will most likely be able to use it normally. At the top part I get stuck slightly again, but if I crouch I can make it over the top.

The only settings I've changed is raising my fps_max from 60 to 100 and using refreshlock in the background to fix the WINXP bug.

Server latency is not an issue, as this happens on all servers. No other settings have been changed.

So i'm curious, have any of you experienced this problem at all, and if so, is there any fix? The problem sounds minor, but its really handicapping me when I onos since ladders become deathtraps when you cant climb one and you have a half dozen marines chasing you <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Same here, I just got my new PC with some awesome specs, I'm pulling a solid 100 fps, so with you having the same problem I think it has to do with our movement under the higher fps. Like jetpackers who can fly farther with higher fps......

The only thing I found is to jump on the ladder. The crouch/jump dosnt work and the only thing I cant climb with is the gorge. I must learn to jump better as an Alien now.

I don't think JPs are tighed to the FPS of the clients any more, as was the case in 1.04.

I also find it doubtful that FPS tweaks should effect ladders like that. FPS does still effect ladders, (bugs,) but should stop you from climbing them at all. Try changing the FPS back, dont run the program, run NS, and try to climb a ladder. Still same problem?

    If not, <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

No, Ive tried everything I could think of. If I raise my fps over 85 then I cant climb ladders without jumping on them. Makes it real hard for an Onos in tight spots.

    Here are my system specs:
    Alienware P4 3.4 EE
Main Drive 2x 36 gig 10000 RPM Raptors raid 0
Storage Drive 1x 74 gig 10000 RPM Raptor
    2 gig EX ram
    Nvidia 6800 Ultra
    NEC 22 in. Flat Panel
    WinXpPro

It HAS to do with me FPS, I can run NS from 20 FPS to 300 FPS and the only time I have trouble with the ladders in anything over 85 FPS. I've spent a month on this. The only way for me to play without the ladder bug is to lower my monitor's refresh rate to 85 FPS or below.

This is the old ladder bug that has been in NS since the beginning. Your normal climbing speed is below 180 units/s. In the HLSDK in pm_shared.c(physics) if you don't move more than 2 units(which you won't with a higher framerate) of the ground in one frame you get moved back onto the ground. If you move faster than 180 units per second upwards you get classed as off ground and do not get moved back, this happens in other MODs where ladder speed is higher.

You may also have noticed that if you use a jetpack and allow yourself to fall only to press and hold jump when you are about to land you will be stuck to the ground with your jetpack active until you let go and press jump again.

You might also have noticed that a walking skulk will not be able to wallwalk from a floor (any surface where the z-component of the normal is larger than 0.7 unless the NS devs changed it)up an adjacent wall(skulk walk speed is less than 180 units per second and with a high framerate you will not make it off ground).

You might have noticed that if you strafe walk against a wall or floor as a skulk up a steep slope your z-velocity will reach above 180 units per second and you will be classed as in air which means no friction is applied which means you'll fly forwards like a freaking rocket powered skulk if the incline is long enough to gain speed.

I've reported these bugs and showed where exactly the problem is in the HLSDK, it was moved to the queue in the bug report forum where it was left to rot in order to fix more game disrupting bugs.

To get around the ladder bug you can just abuse another bug with ladders where you turn perpendicular to the ladder and look up as well as strafe inwards to gain extra speed(above 180 units per second) which will allways get you loose no matter what you're framerate is.

Thanks for all the info, I feel educated. I knew it had to do with frame rate. NS plays just as good at 85 FPS as it does at 200 FPS. So I imagine its not high on the bug list. Thanks again.
