Greetings, I doubt many of you have seen me yet, but I really like this mod. It was suggested to me by an online friend quite a lone time ago, and I played an ealier version that didnt have any CO_Map options to play. When it comes to Com Chair, I leave it to someone else ^_^ But I dop make a rather good Gorge <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif' /><!--endemo-->
My questions are probably very general, but it will be of some major help if someone can either link me to a proper thread about the topic of my question, or just outright answer it. I have a few, so I will thank those who help me ahead of time for reading and helping me out.
Question 1: What's with the movement!!
I can see movement for Marines and Aliens are quite different, but my questions pretty much apply to them both. Basiclly, I'm concerned with how to dodge >_< I've heard the terms, Bunny Hopping, Circle Straffing and whatnot, but I have no clue on how to do them right. Anyone got some tips about movement to help a Chicken Mc N00blet out?
Question 2: Melee Ranged Combat
Next question is for the Aliens. I like the speed the Alien race represents, also being able to cling to the walls and hide out is great. However I've got alot of problems when it comes to running around, dodging, and aiming at the same time. What's a good mouse sensitivty to have? Just how close do ya need to be to bite em? And when yer runnin around that fast, how in the world do you compensate to aim for the marine when they are moving around just as much trying to dodge. No matter what I've been trying, I've been danced around and shot to cheese and back. Yet alot of other players I see have no trouble doding, spinning and biting at the same time. Any pointers?
Question 3: Marine Crosshairs And Aiming
Something that's not so much of a problem with me is aiming the guns, however i still get spun around and messed up when an Alien gets in close and starts dancing around me. Once again, whats a good mouse sensitivity and what do you do when a Skulk closes in on ya? Also, is there a way to change the crosshairs to something easier to aim with?
Question 4: Major Lag Issues
Something I've had trouble with ever since getting Steam on my new Comp set up. (I've upgraded from ME to XP) Back on the old set up, lag wasn't a problem, however now its freezing my game every 90 seconds and jumping around like hell when in combat. This is bad for scores... Anyone know how this can be fixed? What are some commands/options I can shut off in the console to help out? Any general tips about processes running on the comp? Is thier a general guide to helping with lag?
Once again, danke for the help people.

Also, if you have lag issues, try going on a server with a lower ping.
check the Customization forum.
When I play I have my mouse sensititvy set to about 3/4 all the way up.
If you are not used to this you might find this to be VERY "touchy/loose"
but after playing all my games at this setting Ive grown very used and acustomed to it. I think it helps with your fast reaction times and for jerking yourself around when you are a skulk in a group or marines, or for dealing with a skulk as a marine when hes trying to chomp your face off lol.
Circle strafing is a very good tactic for all life forms.
Whether you use the arrow keys or the WASD config for movement, make the left and right keys the strafe left and right keys/ You use your mouse/look to turn.
When you circle strafe all you are doing is side stepping left or right but as you do so you are using your mouse to turn so your aim point stays on the same area/ target. (usualy the guy flying at you.) Basically you are just walking in a circle around the guy facing inwards at your target.
Circle strafing is a very good counter to leaping skulks, or Fades blinking straight at you, or lerks who try to fly right at you on a chomping run.
Keep practicing. When you do it enough, you can then use circle strafing to side step an incoming alien, let him miss and fly past you, all the while sending bullets his way.
For the aliens this is also a good way to avoid marine fire when you are trying to melee attack someone. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Read the whole thread, other people have some good points too.
Question 3: As far as your sensitivity goes, pay attention when you're spinning around. You should be able to tell if you're overcompensating for their movement or undercompensating. (Overcompensating -- swinging too far, undercompensating -- not swinging far enough.) Yeah, adjust accordingly. Also a side benefit is that if you're having to pay attention to how fast you track you will calm down and learn faster, since it sounds like you're freaking out in close quarters.
Four: that kind of lag can be several things, from how you describe it. When it happens be sure to tab quickly and check if your ping is spiking. If it is, check your rate (reasonable = ~10000), cl_updaterate (should be > 20), cl_cmdrate (should be on par with updaterate). If that's not the case, it could be a problem with your mouse drivers, get the latest version of directx (9.0b i think?). Otherwise i dunno.
About melee ranged combat. When a skulk is in close to a marine that doesn't have any equipment, the skulk should usually win. Marine players with really good aim can still kill the skulk. However, the average marine will die to the skulk, if the skulk is any good.

Psh don't be a negative nancy. When <b>you</b> are in close combat <b>you</b> should win no matter which side you're on, otherwise you need to work on not freaking out more <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->.

Site with various information on movement:

Should help you get the basics. To help with jumping part of bhop get a 3 jump script, you can search for one on these forums.
I hope I can help you.
Question 1: What's with the movement!!
Marines walk like very other human you know of, BUT:
-They can run as long as they want
-When marines get jetpack they can fly when you keep pressing the jump button
Kharaa walk a lot different:
-Skulk: Can wallclimb, and when the Kharaa have 2+ hives, the Skulk can Leap, that is, they jump VERY far and use up energy quite fast.
-Gorge: Slow fat thingy, bit like Marines movement, but they are smaller.
-Fade: Like Marines, but they can Blink, which is a short burst of FAST movement forward and uses up a bit of energy.
-Onos: HUGE spacecow, and because of their size they have sometimes problems moving around in tighter spaces.
Question 2: Melee Ranged Combat
Question 3: Marine Crosshairs And Aiming
I find NS to be a bit like "Tag your it" , like tapping someone and then he has to tap you again.
Marine
If the Kharaa hit you as a Marine you will lose HP/AP fast, so you will have to dodge them while shooting at them, sounds easy, but I managed to do so after a lot of practice, circle strafing and side jumping is indeed a way, but timing is all you have to learn. Oh and don't worry about aiming, you will learn, but if things get chaotic, that is: skulks on crack, running around you and biting your back, just try to keep a distance and keep shooting and hope your fellow marines give you a bit of cover.
Kharaa
Well thats the other way around, YOU have to "tag", that is: hit the marines enough to let them die,
Skulk: I advice you to ambush a lot, and if possible, attack in groups.
Fade: Very good at hit & run attacks. (blink in, kill some marines, blink out, and heal and repeat when healed.
Lerk:....it can be used in a lot of ways:Camping (try to spore the marines)/Ambushing (a bit hard because they cannot wallclimb and thus not stick to a ceiling/wall)/Just Rambo (Risky, because a Lerk doesn't have that much HP/AP).
Question 4: Major Lag Issues
Make sure you have set your Internet options right in Steam/NS.
I'm not sure how to help you on this.
If you have any more questions, feel free to P/M me.
I didnt expect everyone to be so nice about helping out an NS noober. I find that with my mouse at 15, I'm killing more aliens and keep up with close marine movements. I love Xenocide, and find myself getting cloaked all the time and sneaky sneaking. I'll practice Bhoping and see how I can apply it in game. Thanks for the help.
Back to tackling my lag issues, which are slowly getting better but are still there.
you move it 3 cm slowly- you turn by 60 degrees
you move it 3 cm fast- you turn by 120

Ok, assuming you have cable or dsl, or any other sort of broadband, this is the solution for you. Go into your console and type "rate". Take note of the number it says your rate is at. If its not already, type "rate 20000".
You should notice imeadiate results. If it makes it worse, change it back. Feel free to experiment, it wont break anything <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
