Ns 1.04 - A Question

I miss 1.04 and the epic 2 - 3 hour battles that would take place. The maps would begin and within the first 5 or 10 minutes actual battle lines would be drawn... and the next hour or so would be the greatest adrenaline ride of my life. (That's leagal anyway...) So why was the descision made wayyy back in the day when 2.0 came out to change all the rules, so the once fun epic **** in your pants scared feel of NS turned into a quick 15 - 20 minute death match style game with little to know suspense or epic comebacks in the game. So my question is... is there plans in version 3.0 to maybe tweak the rules so those epic battles will once more live on? Thanks. Flame on...

The problem is that the majority of the time, people are busy teching to JP HMG instead of having mentioned epic games.

So then most of you still play with the 2.01 then?

Meaning lerk still have spike, gorges have spit-healspray-bilebomb-web, etc?

No, most of us give up playing the official one (2.01) and started playtesting the recent beta (NS3.0 b4a)

v1.04 is the very first public release of NS. It was buggy, and sported chained evolutions, but damn were the aliens strong. 1 skulk could just waste everything it seem.

It's not so much that skulks were "strong" as much as they were "not crappy."

Replace skulk with carapace and you have it right.

OMG someone actualy agrees with me! I really miss those long, fun games where at the end, you don't even care who one, you just enjoyed playing. =( I miss 1.04, I have some old screenshots of when me and my friend made the 3 second onos killer in 2.04 or whichever version they introduced electrified tf's. lol

Take the following statement with the knowledge that at my very best marine play, I was slightly above average:

In 1.04, I could take on and reliably kill three pub skulks, and often 2+ skulks in clan matches and scrims. Good marines in 1.04 were untouchable. In the NSA-I, a big 1.04 invitational tournament, sYn did not use their infantry portal once in the match vs. eve. Eve had, amongst others, romano^_^, who was then and is now amongst the best skulks in this game. 1.04 was heavily unbalanced towards marines in early, mid, and late game, the only chance aliens had was a desperate delaying action to get three DCs and some lerks up to kill the initial JPs or kill marine base, and maybe get the 2nd hive up. Marines pushing into the hive and spawncamping and winning was a common sight.

The epic battles happened because no one had any idea what they were doing.

The fights between teched marines vs. fades and lerks to hold tactically important phase locations are much more "epic", IMO.

*cough*crouch hitbox bug*cough*

But yeah, it was riddled with a few problems like Fades getting stuck, JP+HMG rushes....

The only good thing about it was that Oni were always feared. Unfortunately, it wasn't hard to lock down a hive at the same time. Let alone the fact that turrets were useless against professional skulkers that circled them.

I'm sort of happy with NS the way it is. The only problem is that epic battles were no longer epic

We all miss epic battles, but just because they happened in 1.04 doesn't mean 1.04 was epic battles. For me, 1.04 was "ok let's try to kill marines until they get JP/HMG and win the game."

We all want epic battles, but I don't think 1.04 is the solution. Go ahead and try it out for yourself though, Bry made a 1.04 for steam.

am I the only one that doesn't miss the 2 hive lockdowns followed by 30+ minutes of marines slaughtering skulks?

I sort of miss the long games too. Comebacks and turning of tides are still possible but they seem the exception instead of the rule these days, i.e., the first 5 minutes or so of the game strongly influence the ultimate outcome.

Hell yea, best games I had were in 1.04.
Lerk was god and i NEVER used spikes. Dash in, umbra, bitebitebite.
Never forget, me as lerk and friend as fade defending 2nd hive.
NO ONE else on the team thought defending the hive was important and found it more critical to run into a turret farm and die.
For about 10 mins we kept baby safe from JP, HA trains, etc. Madness.
Till the damn phone rang and I had to get it, turn around, hives exploding.
Oh well.

The "epic" battles happened because the winning team was too nub to know how to finish the game off.

Play it and see for your self.

All I remember from those days was lanning with my friend kev at 4 a.m. trying to defend powersilo from a heavy train with lerk spikes. Sitting up on the ledges in the hive trying to take them out until a jp'r took us out.

It's funny..we were just reminiscing about the old days of NS. When it didnt matter if your base was overrun with onos. It was just so cool to see them trample through the base and kill everything in their path. In those days it seemed like it was all about the fun, and the bonds you made with other players. You knew everyone since there were so few servers. Good times.

I miss those days.
