Intel Or Amd

Confuddled
I've been pondering all weekend what processor to have for my new computer i have a choice of going for a slightly cheaper:

AMD Athlon™ 64 FX-53 Processor with HyperTransport Technology

Specifications

Frequency 2.4 GHz

Bus Frequency 1600 MHz

Level 1 Cache 128 KB

Level 2 Cache 1 MB Advanced Transfer

**Alienware® USB 2.0 Flash Drive
Due to BIOS limitations, bootability is currently not supported on AMD based systems. (This means what?)

Or the £20 more expensive;

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 560 w/ HT Technology 3.6GHz 1MB Cache

Specifications

Processor Speed 3.6 GHz

System Bus Speed 800 MHz

Level 2 Cache 1 MB

Package Type LGA 775-pin

Lastly does anyone know if the ATI RADEON™ X800 XT Platinum Edition 256MB DDR3 can get decent frame rates for STALKER or would i be better off with the (Heavily more expensive) NVIDIA® GeForce™ 6800 Ultra 256MB 8x AGP ?

You cannot boot your system from a flash disk yet. If you want to do that, you will have to wait for a bios update. Chances are you will never need to boot from a flash drive.

I would argue for the Intel. The processors seem similar in comparison with their specs. In addition 64 bit processors have yet to be fully utilized. I have always had good luck with the Intel sets. (still has a 1.4 Athlon and a 2.0 p4)

Go check out some benchmarks for thos processors. That would be the best idea.

You kids with your buying the highest end electronics. I love you! Push the prices down on the next to high end equipment for us bargain hunters.

Go AMD, its the best processor you can get on the market atm(They have proven that it really don't matter how fast your computer runs in terms of GHz). Benchmarks have all proven this don't try and argue with me. As for your video card, personally I would wait a couple months for the 6600 series(A LOT CHEAPER than the X800 XT and 6800 Ultra but it looks like you wanna buy something now. In that case I would get NVidia but yes, I am an NVidia fanboy so to be less bias I would suggest you look over the intarnet and find out which card is best for you, because both cards have their weaknesses and powers. For instance if you find yourself playing more OpenGL games, go for the 6800 Ultra, if you find yourself playing more DirectX Games, then go for the X800 XT.

Right now is not the best time to be buying top of the line in computers, Wait until socket 940 mobos come with PCI-X slots if you want a upgradeable top of the line machine for at least the next 3 years. The emergance of a new Video card port and slot size symoltaniously does not come every day, and you're really not gonna want to be stuck with an old P4 with a PCI-X slot down the line, and symoltaniously, what good is a hawt and secksey processor if it is constantly bottle necked by the limitatations of an old AGP style slot...

[edit] to clarify, AMD is hands down the best processor ATM, and both the top level cards are amazing, but will have little future upgradeability unless they are run off of PCI-X slots, which is why you need to either wait for AMD boards to support PCI-X, or new pentium technology to come out that will allow them to compete on the high end consumer market with AMD again...

I say go with Intel because my intel has performed way better than my AMD has...

Although most "gamers" would probably say AMD, there really isn't that much of a difference between processors ATM.

I would definitely go for the ATI RADEON™ X800 XT if you can get it, because personally I've known of too many people with bad experiences with Nvidia cards, but then some people have problems with the ATI cards too, so you just might to look into both of them some more. And personally I like the pentiums much more then the AMD's because of problems I've had with computers containing AMD processors, BUT it looks like that AMD processor you're looking at is 64 bit which is definitely more future proof. But in the end I actually think you should wait a few more months and wait and see what comes out.

AMD. Definitely. Not as expensive, and will far outperform the Intel chip. An Ath64 at 2.2GHz beats out a P4 OC'd to 4GHz across the board in synthetic benchmarks, as well as end-user performance. You have the opportunity to grab not only a 2.4GHz, but a server-grade 2.4GHz AMD chip. Go for it.

The X800 XTPE is currently the most monstrous card on the market right now... plus, it stays in a single slot, only requires *one* power lead, and does colour calculations correctly (unlike the nVidias, whic have to cut color calcs to appear competative).

I think that the Athlon 64 bit is kinda useless because by the time there will be 64 bit programs, the clock speed of the 64 bit board you have would be outdated and you would have to upgrade at a faster speed again.

I would get a board that has a PCI express slot and get like a x800

I'd rather go with the Athlon xp mobile becuase you can overclock it and save lots of money for a cooler for the cpu and or the video card.

    Totally Agree.

Even though i am an nVidia fan i would still say go with the ATI card till nVidia sort themselves out. Although i see no difference in the output from the 2 cards ATI seem to be ahead at the moment.

CPU, there is no other choice than AMD. Pentium seem to be really loosing grip, and even with HT technology are still stomped on then devoured by AMD. Also as an example pentium are now having to work from some amd concets after they found that thei 64Bit CPU couldnt run 32Bit apps, where as the AMD's could do both at a blistering speed.

Gundam, the Ath64 is actually faster at 32-bit applications than the AthXP is... so it's still a good upgrade. It just allows you to use 64-bit code when it DOES come out, or even on current machines if you are running Linux, or the WinXP-64 Beta.

You'll more likely want a Venus 7 or 8 for cooling, which are inexpensive, and still have a solid copper base.

Meh, if you have money for top of the line graphics cards and top of the line processers, shell out a couple more bucks and jump for the liquid cooling, at least that way you can squeeze a good few extra Mg out of your processor with no real risk.

I now its faster, but my friend said the 64 bit barely makes any difference on 32 bit applications.

I would just save that money and wait until 64 bit programs are moe common so the prices drop... The only reason that the 64bit cose $900 is that Intel hasn't come up with a 64 bit yet, so AMd can rule how much they want to charge for it.

But socket 939-940 chips are going to be increadibly common in the near future, as the socket size is pretty much brand new. What you really need to wait for in the high end market is socket 940 boards that come with PCI-X slots, like I said before. Anything lower end than that means your gonna be replacing your mobo in less then a year if you expect to stay in the high end market anyways. A 940 socket mobo with PCI-X will sit at the top of the line with only parts upgrades for as long as 3 years when they come out, and even after that it will still be a force to be reconed with amounst other computers of that time.

Meh, you could wait forever to upgrade becasue parts will always be getting better. But you so rarely see an advance that AMD/PCI-X would be in motherboard technology that its the kind of thing you really need to jump on when it starts to loom just over you...

Socket 940 came out a little while ago, and the CPU's that go with it are ****ing fast mofos. PCI-X also came out a short while ago, and it is potentially capable of running vidcards that are easily as much as 2 times as powerful as the current top of the line. Problem is that the 2 new features haven't been put into the same mobo as of yet (with the exeption of tyan's dual CPU mobo's, which aren't high preformance upgradable machines, but rather industry level power). I would guess it would be less than 3 months before someone finally puts PCI-X into a single CPU AMD mobo, but it could be as much as 6-8 months

If anyone cares there is some PCI stuff on the alienware site.

This is the first time i have heard about the PCI X stuff. I'm guessing that these new slots will replace AGP and standardPCI slots totally. Are they back compatible?

PCIe is the new tech that will replace the old PCI/AGP, and yes it is back-compatible. PCI-X is the name of another tech that never really got off the ground; it was just a new architecture for the PCI bus that doubled the bus width and (in some cases) double-pumped the clockrate. PCIe changes the architecture to be 'packet-switched'.

Personally I like the sock-754s since they're [relatively] cheap, and from all accounts there is a noticeable increase in performance in games. $175 for a 3000+ Ath64 on newegg, i believe.
