Good/bad Commanders

<div class="IPBDescription">the difference is Staggering</div> Just played huge game as Kharaa and started off doing my usual Skulk rushes. I am suprised after a few attempts that I've only killed a couple of marines, something is definately up, they're moving in groups, what the? After a little while I start seeing turret clusters in many different places all over the map, some cutting off movement and such. "No matter I'll just go the other way around." Before we even got our 2nd hive up we start seeing HA's+HMG and I realize these things are not coincidences. The Commander's name was Hot Soup from Ender's game and he routinely got congratulations from his team. We almost got our 3rd hive up but then they killed it and started attacking our other hives. We Skulks were rushing all over the map defending various structure under attack. I was almost ready to leave as things looked hopeless when Hot Soup announced he had to leave.

After that, the Marines never seemed to reccuperate. I started taking them out while they moved around alone, like usual, and soon became Fade and took out a lot of the turrets. Once the outer perimeters began to fall it was no problem to evolve into Onos and finish it up. From seeing both sides of the spectrum in one game, the difference between a great commander and a so-so commander can win or lose the game for the Marines.

The commander has to be the leetest guy you have.

A good commander can make a team full of newbies work well.

A bad one can make a team full of elite aimbot hax0rs be decimated.

Think of it like any other RTS... a warcraft3 newbie will get decimated by a war3 expert, through no fault of his own units, sometimes even if the units of the newbie are hugely more numerous / powerful!

A team full of lions lead by a sheep will fail, a team full of sheep lead by a lion will succeed......

You know a good commander can't really get a game full of n00bs to play good.

I just played a game as a commander and my team was totally new, they joined the game, then they wen't: "Commander, give me ammo!!!" (standing right next to the armory) then I told them to use the armory and they ran outside and got killed.

I gave them some waypoints to defend our base but they walked off, after a little while we finally got hmg, I gave out two hmg's and gave them some waypoints but they each went their sepparate way and before they knew it they were dead.

Then when the fades came in and we started loosing they got really **obscenity** at me. they went: "omg it's not our fault our console dude sucks" (They didn't really understand the term "commander")

so basicly, if your team is full of n00bs, you can't get it to work, not even if you curse at them, I did that too, don't think i've ever cursed so much in my life.

I tried to get them to walk places aswell, but then all of a sudden they start going: "OMFG WE FOUND A RESOURCE NOZZLE! WE RULE!! CONSOLE GUY MAKE SOME THING OVER HERE!!" at that point our base was being attacked by two onos and a skulk.

    the inhumanity!!

My point being: A good commander is important but if the players are not up to it it's no help.

I'd like to think I'm an OK commander, but one time I got such a group of whiners that I just gave up and left.

All they'd do is beg for a hmg & ha (ok, i'll just go and pick some off the equipment tree) and went solo to be killed. They'd respawn and tell me off for not dropping them medpacks on demand. They wouldn't hold down a single extra nozzle...

Yeah, I'm an rts vet, so most cases I seem to be ASKED to jump into the commander's chair, but nowadays I LOATHE the experience. A few games I've gotten a good team together who follows orders, doesn't move on their own, and makes sure they all stay together. Then I get the group who's constantly separated and at opposite ends of the map, screaming for ammo/health/hmg's/HA/etc., and it completely makes me want to get out of the seat and abandon the useless fawks. People haven't gotten outta the mindset yet that marines can't be played like aliens/your standard deathmatch experience, and I'm counting down the seconds until the n00bie NS community realizes this so we can get some real strategy implemented.

    A good team + a good commander = win.
