Wireless Network

<div class="IPBDescription">HELP ME!</div> Ok, here is the deal:
My mom just recently got an IBM Think Pad T42 from her work (hey free lap top, yay!)
we also got a Linksys wireless router (please, I don't have the $$ to buy a new router, so just lay off the 'linksys is teh sux' lines)

I had it all set up and working, I was ussing WEP, and it worked. I had set it all up simply ussing the network connecitons stuff from windows (no 3rd programs)

Then she took it into the college (she is a prof at CUNY) to have them install the windows suite (was suposed to have come with it, however it didn't). The IT staff there usses Novel to distribute software (so now every time she turns on her comupter it asks her for her Novel login, something they didn't give her!)

They also seem to have installed some other things that broke the connection here...
She now has sitting on her system tray:
IBM Access Connections (this might have been there before, but I didn't use it)

I managed to get her connected to the LAN once (I ma honestly not sure how), I restarted the computer to make sure it would ohld, and it didn't.

Things I have done:
1) I changed our network to simply denie everyone exept for her mac adress (yes, I put it in correctly)
2) Played with the 'wireless Connection Status':
This seems to insist in staying in the 'Radio OFF' mode,
I try the 'Find WLAN' button, it comes up with 2 networks, both named linksys, one has the correct MAC adress of my router, the other dosn't (I assume this is some one else in the complex we live in)
When I try and connect ussing this it fails claiming weak signal strength. This is wierd as I am sitting next to my router atm (laptop on my lap, and infront of my desktop).

I am compleatly lost about all of this, I realy don't know squat about Wireles netowrking, I don't know squat about XP, and I am just lost.

please help me out.

This may not be the case with your router, but its a suggestion...

Have a look in your router settings to see if there is anything about enabling the wireless LAN.

If there is, and its not enabled, there might be where your problem is.

linksys is fine as long as you use all linksys networking. I'm afraid I'm just about to plunge into this myself but I haven't moved in to the place where it's all going to be set up. Hopefully and responses you get will help me when I set up my network.

Haven't messed w/ Novell crap but I'm sure that's the root of your problem. Try googling any exact error messages you have along w/ some creative phrases pertaining to the situation and that might come up with something.

    1) Wireless is what she wants b/c we can't run CAT5 to all the places she wants to beable to sit and use her computer (this includes out on the deck)

    2) I had the network working (the signal str was perfect) before she took it in to the college (aka, yes the wireless network is hooked up)

    3) Yes DOOMeh, I share the same hatred of Novell, it is some of the worst software out there.....

I will try googling, but I am doubting I will get much luck

any one else have any clues?

If you give me directions to try out I will follow them to the letter and post back full info. I don't realy know what I am looking for/at so I am having a hard time giving exact info.

    please help me out <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile-fix.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile-fix.gif' /><!--endemo-->
