Fly of fly!
will the winged alien be able to fly no matter where? or is it just like it falls slower and stuff, it would be awesome if it could fly everywhere, like in starship troopers, those aliens with giant scissors, MUAHAHAHA! cutting of heads everywhere!

He can fly just about anywhere that he has room. Unless something has changed that I'm unaware of, you get him to fly by repeatedly tapping your jump button (ie: jump=flap). It's very much like a first-person version of the great 80's video game Joust. To fly higher/faster, flap faster. To glide, flap slower. It may sound like it would be awkward, and there has already been a lot of forum debate over this, but once you try it and get used to the feeling, it becomes second nature and is really cool!

If anything has changed with regards to the flyer, I will be personally very disappointed. Nobody better touch my favorite alien unless they're making him better. Yeah, the flyer'll be able to go anywhere that he has room. He'll be the same size as the level one and two, which is the same size as a crouched marine, so he'll be able to get into all the little nooks and crannies. Hopefully mappers are adding high perches for the flyer to land so it can lie in wait for unsuspecting marines below, and so the player can rest his hand. The Joust style of flying is definitely going to be the best. No doubt about it. And I'm pretty sure that it'll be able to glide down, or if not the player can just tap the fly button to slow the fall.

Yep, this is how he works. You can glide by holding the jump button down, you'll slowly (and silently) descend...

Hmmm... I just realize how little accomidation for different alien styles I've had in my map. Mostly it's all just marine-friendly, with a few places where Bob could sortof hide.

But, considering that I'm still mapping the "marine half" of my map, that should make sense. I'll make sure the aliens have home turf advantage near the hives. That includes perches for the level 3, lots of dark corners for the level 1, and so on.

I also need to read over the new mapping guildelines and decide what I'm going to do about resources for the marines. There are an awful lot of things I haven't been thinking about! :\

In the concept art for the flyer, I have seen that it can fold up its wings. Shouldn't this mean that the flyer could both move in normal mode and jump, flying only when wanting to? Yes, I know it makes no sense seeing as how flying is better than jumping, but I'm just curious.
• Shuvit_ViperShuvit_Viper Join Date: 2002-01-25 Member: 62Members
i think if you want to jump, you just fly up a little. But is the fly key bindable? i mean, i would hate to be tapping my fly key all the time, and it would kill my keyboard from all the bashing... i'd rather have it that you don't tap it repeatedly, but just hold it down, then you fly. If you want to stay at the same heigt you have to tab, but if you have the room you just fly a bit up, a bit gliding, a bit up, a bit gliding. There would be an additional key needed, a fall/dive button (or a glide button). Then, when you are in mid-air and don't press anything you glide down, but when you press the dive button you just fall like a lev1 would fall..on top of the marines heads..

-

otherwise you would get instead of buy binds fly binds, which is cheating in my opinion; having an advantage another player does not have. (ping is something you can't do anything about).

Sounds ok but the NS team have always wanted to keep the number of bindable keys down so the game is easier to play. i actually prefer the current system as it is a lot like Joust, which kicked ###.
• BananBanan Join Date: 2002-02-22 Member: 235Members
naah, it would be better if u HAD to tap, people could make skills maps for flying and stuff, that would be cool, like tfc concing ;P

i myself like the Joust system of flying...however, i'm not sure my keyboard will, nor will newbies who may find it frustrating, and wont understand at first why they arent flying....I guess i support the teams decision in this one fully though, as that can be solved with a manual, though my poor keyboard....i'll have to bind that to my mouse button for rapidity.....

Jeez, where are you guys buying these keyboards that can't withstand being typed on? You will not be hitting the 'flap' key nearly as often as you would your WASD keys, for example, and those seem to withstand the punishment, right?

I will gladly replace any keyboards that you can prove were destroyed by the Level3 flying mode...
• GasfiendGasfiend Join Date: 2002-02-12 Member: 205Members
hey wait a minute...we can't prove that.....and the wsad keys arent constantly smashed upon, they're held-down almost constantly....hmmm, though the space bar is almost always smashed down upon..so if i bind the flying ability to the space bar, then there should be no problem.....hmm, though i suppose it'd be frustrating if i evolved to a lv.3, and began pounding furiously, only to be shot out of the sky.....and a free keyboard offer from MonsE....i think i'm gonna find a way to prove that NS destroyed my keyboard......

People, please. You're blowing this whole smashing thing out of proportion. Think about it, each time you press the button, your wings flap. (I'm thinking this is the case, at least.) Something that big won't be able to flap his wings all too rapidly. Maybe a couple times a second lifting off (though that is somewhat speedy, maybe) and once a second in glide mode. I really doubt you'll have to get out your rapid-fire caffeine and speed tapping skills to handle the flight of the level 3.

Yeah, watch jurassic park 3. Observe the silly pteradons. Flap . . . . . flap . . . . . flap . . . . . flap . . . . .gore . . . peck . . . .. flap . . . . The level 3 is not a humingbird and the keyboard is not made out of tissue paper and toothpicks. Don't worry.

I imagine that if you're on the ground, you would jump with the space key. When in the air, you flap with the space key (assuming your jump key is bound to space, like it should be ).

Joust was a cool game, not for the least part because they got flying right. Now if I can just get up my super-sonic speeds on maps that don't loop around the edges!

if you don't want to hit the key alot just make an alias to fly for you... also whats the rate on flapping because it shouldn't be however fast you hit the button cause then aliases would pwn us all... like 1 flap ever ever half a second, to 3/4 of a second?
• Bob_the_AlienBob_the_Alien Join Date: 2002-01-30 Member: 135Members
I was hoping to every 1 or 1.5 seconds :/
• PsymastaPsymasta Join Date: 2002-03-10 Member: 295Members
I don't like the idea of pressing my spacebar every 1.5 seconds. I wouldn't like to count every 1.5 seconds to know when I need to flap -_-

It'll probably be like:

Space-Space-Space right after each other if you'd like to get up in the air fast, then you slowly glide down, you jump once more and glide some. THen you see this high vantage point you want to go to. jump-jump-jump.

I don't think flying will be about hitting a button all the time, but rather glide slowly down and then flap.

Though I really should try the game before saying how it is.

I don't have the keyboard problem, since I'll be using my belkin nostromo n50 speedpad thingy. I used to try to use it for counter-strike, but there were just too many keys to bind. NS should be ok though. My jump key is on the d-pad, so it's pretty easy to whack it many times in a row without damaging either the controller or my thumb.

Here's some Belkin Nostromo n50 Speedpad info for those of you who haven't seen/heard of it before.

Yes, It's awkward and hard to use, hence he can out play everyone trying to play with it, while he and I laugh and use our arrow keys and their general area
