good read. i did not learn anything new but im sure someone will.

i always take cara but i suck as fade and so need the +100ap

though he did leave out the x number of hits to kill x lvl armor marine (unless i missed it but i did not see a sec. 1d)

Acid Rocket: As of now, the acid rocket is not an attack meant to be used for damaging marines, but deals double the amount of damage to structures. Acid rocket is used most efficiently as a way to weaken light marines, or Heavy Armored marines, before they get close enough to damage you, easening your fight.

Since when did acid rocket do double to structures....?

The use of acid rocket depends on your style of fading. My use for it was to weaken marines and force medpack use without me having to come in and endanger myself. Then when it was time to go in, the marines would have a lower res supply and usually no armor.

I agree with that, but acid doesnt do double to structures correct?

good read but always easier said than done
practice and practice and practice is what u need
fades are IMO the most skill-requiring lifeform and hardest to master
  • NadagastNadagast Join Date: 2002-11-04 Member: 6884Members
fade isn't very hard at all imo, it's mostly brains on when you should attack or not.... I'd say like 60-90% brains the rest skill. Skulks are way harder imo since you can die so fast
  • LitoLito Join Date: 2003-09-04 Member: 20560Members
And fps. Lots and lots of fps. Its really really really hard to fade with 30 fps because you can't track the marines when they're up close

Being able to use blink takes quite a bit of skill, particularly getting through small gaps and not getting stuck on walls and such.

There are two counters to this:

    1) Experience
    2) Cold blood when you are fleeing

Surely brains and skill go hand in hand?

Anyway, dont read that bs. Easiest was to learn fade is play combat, save all your levels and fade.

    2 tips,

    learn when to run

get lastinv (last used weapon function) on a easy button (mouse 2 I have)
  • CypherCypher Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14579Members
fading in combat makes you too agressive and you'll probably end up dieing in real NS
  • degamer106degamer106 Join Date: 2004-05-09 Member: 28550Banned
i think combat really teaches a lot of new players how to use each of the alien classes. But what it fails to teach is to be defensive and to use ambushes to stop the marines.

In Combat, lifeforms are expendable. In Classic, they are not.

Judgement, some more judgement and finally an extra helping of good judgement is what a fade needs - but theres nearly infinite room for upping your Fading beyond that, at least as far as terrain use goes - strafeturning, crouching into small gaps, blinking along ceilings et cetera. But those things are mostly optional and serve mostly to let you take bigger risks.

And Lito is right. Fading is extremely FPS dependant - for one because of the strafeturn mechanics (low FPS won't allow you to turn at a high enough angle), for another because your controls become jerky and finally because its just annoying as hell
  • NadagastNadagast Join Date: 2002-11-04 Member: 6884Members
yea and you blink farther with higher fps I'm pretty sure

the guide says regen is the best defensive upgrade for fades....

That is so not true... if you have 2 hives and HA are knocking on your door, I'd rather take a cara fade over a regen fade...

Also sometimes in clan play you have 2 fades, have one go regen the other go cara it works fairly well on smaller maps.

Regen on really large maps, but cara works really good on smaller maps, like veil or eclipse

I hadnt played much of 2.0, just lots of 1.04.
But im finding combat is good because Im learning alot about Fades and Onos.
Yea, the only problem is you tend not to focus on living longer, because you know youll respawn as the same form. But total playtime as the form is insanely higher.
Also Im been focusing on not mixing similar upgrades, like celerity AND adren, or regen AND cara since that wont be kosher in ns_. Ive been leaning with regen lately, to pop out and back in, because im not gettin meta. Or wanting to run to the hive. But im slowly shifting to use cara more, running to the hive, etc.
Im sure once I get the hang of it for another week maybe, Ill be confidant in going Fade in ns, even at 1 hive.
  • j3stj3st Join Date: 2004-06-28 Member: 29602Members
Yup, it's always important in ns to check your life and armor as a fade and NOT to just go and kill that one more marine. It is that that usually kills you.

But I think skill is equally as important as judgement. Skill is for the killing part, judgement for the staying alive part.

All skill = 1 marine death and your death
All judgement = fade is only there for intimidation
  • LitoLito Join Date: 2003-09-04 Member: 20560Members
The best intimidation is killing marines.
  • keep_it_Gangstakeep_it_Gangsta Join Date: 2003-06-23 Member: 17632Members
Guys I said as my main tip

    LEARN WHEN TO RUN

If you keep that in mind combat is the best way to lern fade because if you do make a mistake you dont get punished for it, plus its easier to get to fade in co then ns.

Try and play combat as fade dying as few times as you can, that is truly the best practise for fade in ns.

And as for strat in ns, always go carapace, unless you are fading on one hive (which you probably shouldnt be but anyway). Once you have two hives you get this ability called metabolism which will give you health back anyway so you dont need regen, and what it will do is stop you getting taken out instantly by those 3 marines around the corner who you didnt realise all had shotguns.

As for movement upgrade, well its up to you really, I go for celerity but this one is really personal choice.
  • CypherCypher Join Date: 2003-03-16 Member: 14579Members
the best practice for fading in ns_maps is to fade on ns_maps...jesus

fades are essential with only one hive too, and adren is the best movement upgrade

cmon now, im new and i can get 15 kills on a map if i get my 4th power and adrenaline, ACID ROCKET OWNS CHOKEPOINTS CMON NOW IM A NOOB AND I CAN DO IT... lol
  • GrahfGrahf Join Date: 2004-01-21 Member: 25558Members
Unless you are only closely defending a hive, then i see no reason at all to go cara fade.

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Once you have two hives you get this ability called metabolism which will give you health back anyway so you dont need regen, and what it will do is stop you getting taken out instantly by those 3 marines around the corner who you didnt realise all had shotguns<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
Regen heals 27 health a tick, while meta gives you 20 and doesnt allow you to attack. Hmmmm, which is better. As for dieing to 3 sgers....scouting is nice. Cara gives you 1(2 at 2 hives) more blast to live then rgn, so vs 3 sgers if you cant live without it then you prolly will not with it.

If your mouse1 key is sticky, yes. Otherwise Celerity, or even Silence can do better.

And I'll agree with grahf, Cara Fades stink unless you're desperately defending an active Hive or one with DCs.
