Go Retail!

Sell this baby!
Congratulations NS, you have just replaced the Counter-Strike link on my desktop and been placed in my quicklaunch taskbar (a position held by such other noble programs as WinAmp, Iexplorer, Calculator). And as I did this quick task, it occured to me, Natural-Selection is better than Counter-Strike! This simple icon changing was a symbol of things to come: Natural-Selection will be more popular than counter-strike is!

Now maybe its the Root Beer talking, or the fact that my brain is more mush than grey-matter after 4 straight hours of Natural Selection, but for god sakes NS already has like as many servers as the venerable DoD, and NS is only on version 1.0.1! I mean in every game I play I'm always yelling about unfairly balanced teams and how I always get stuck in some wall or something, but I still love this game sooooo much that I can't stop playing. If you guys ever fix even one more bug I don't think I'll ever find a reason to stop playing. Its like Everquest in the sense that I can't stop playing BUT its unlike everquest in the sense that its not tedious and boring .

So basically my question is this... will one of you programmers have my love child-- WAIT NO! Sorry wrong question... My question is this: "When will VALVe make NS an official mod, and start selling it in stores... and Why haven't they already!?!?!?!"

yeah my CS shortcut is likewise now a NS shortcut, with the CS logo!

go NS team!, absolutely fantastic, and still gonna get better (tweak a few more stats, maybe revamp teh jetpacks)
I know id pay for this mod
and if CS deserves retail placement, NS definately does

and i totally agree with the EQ - NS reference, im addicted to NS, and its worth the attention!

It's hard to go commercial, you need a pretty strong business plan for it, plus the commitment to it will HAVE to happen, thus making it a big risk if somehow it flops. I personally would *LOVE* to see it retail, as it will give the NS team more funds and more materialistic rewards for their hard work!
Keep up the good work!

And then they can get all rich, license the Doom 3 or HL 2 Engine in a few years, and make a whole new Natrual Selection 2!

NS does deserve to go retail, and to be #1.
But realistically, #2 might be the best that can be achieved.

Going retail COULD work, although as with CS they continue to have it as a free d/l, which I think is a smart move. For you deprived individuals who have never heard of it, Subspace had a looooooooooong open beta period where many many people got hooked. Then VIE and Virgin decided to make it buy-to-play and almost everyone jumped ship. Now the game's rights have been released and it's run entirely by its community and is going strong. So moral of the story is (I hope) I think it would be a bad move by the NS team to reneg on their previous prominse of making NS always available as a free d/l.

Hmm ...

Don't know about this ...

If anyone who downloaded the leaked ATI build Doom III version 0.02 build, they would know that Doom III has an insanely amount of detail in it ...

The Doom III maps are extremely detailed ...

And we don't know much about Doom III yet ...

So lets just wait until Doom III is released and then shoot up crazy mod suggestions for it ya?

Although at the moment, all games produced by id Software is mod friendly ...
(yes, HL engine is a heavily modified Quake 1 engine)

I removed my CS a very VERY long time ago.

Anyway if ns ever went retail the best time is now. If you did it late like cs you bring a whole set of n00bs in that are really crap (ns is harder to get used to than cs as well) then in flow the cheats. Yeah well i pretty much stoped playin cs when it went retail it seemed to get boring after that then ya started getting ppl hedshooting you through walls, then coming out with lame excuses like you were there before and **obscenity**.

Isnt the detail in Doom 3 the textures, cant remember the name think its bump mapping or somin. It gives the ilusion with lighting effects on textures that there is alot of detail in the model but if you strip the texture it will end up as a plain bog standard high poly model. Well not to say this is bad, its very very cool. I just stating a fact that could well not be a fact as i may have it all wrong. Im a silly bugger if i do, just correct me, dont slit my throat or anythin like what happens to ppl normaly.

Some points in the models are probably extremely high poly count but not as much as it shows.

Am i the only one who sees this game as going retail a VERY BAD idea?

CS was okay, but when it went retail, every yuppy nine year old with his mommy's checkbook jumped on board seeing as it had become so much more easier to do it.

The only advantage to going retail that i would see is that the dev team might actually get money for what they have been doing. And what a worthy thing it has been too.

But that ain't why the Dev's did it, was it? It was to give birth to something that would unify the RTS and FPS worlds. To create something so powerful and mind rattilingly different from any other thing Halflife had ever seen that it has torn the winds of time from the sky itself.

Or am i reading too much into this?

never mind that now.

Truthfully, the Dev team did it because they love the whole idea of teamwork and RTS. They must have also loved Alien, Aliens and Starcraft as well.

Sigh... when are we going to stop getting things like this

This game was not meant as a "wannabe"
You would have to use the same reasoning for Starcraft being a wannabe aliens....
Because games have similar species... does not make them the same game.
Like i said in another thread... does everyone who portrays dwarfs as small and strong ripping of tolkien? I THINK NOT.

OMG. Subspace! I loved subspace. It was the first online game that I ever played/got hooked on. Then came Half-Life a while later. Subspace is the only game I've seen that didn't noticeably lag on a 56k modem.
Anyway, when it went pay, I stopped playing for a bit, then finally bought it, and found that there were few people still playing it.
I think I have that installed around here somewhere still... I'd look, but I think everyone here knows what I'd rather be playing

Ns will probobly never become retail but we can still support the NS team buy buying NS merchandise.

We won't have any copywrite issues as far as the name 'Natural Selection' is concerned. That's already our property (Or Charlie's, to be exact.)

.....

ALOT of mods have been better then CS. Just most of the players don't pay attention to them. When it comes to looks just look at CS models and compair them to many other models other there and the real thing. You will burst out laughing when you see their lack of details, errors and overwhelming fuglyness. CS is just mod that came out early and everyone played so much that they didn't realize mods got a lot better since then. Yes I also believe models don't make the mod, gameplay does but CS misses alot of good gameplay they could of got easy...

I say don't go retail, you gain 20 times the "n00bs" and selling something that you release for free is just stupid, no marketing stratigy included(unless it was a demo that had very few features compaired to the full deal). I am guessing Flay already saw this because what he said in the FAQ.

I'm not sure what "copyright" issues you're referring to, but I don't think we'll have any problems if we ever get NS into retail.

This is the deal: if NS goes retail, it will still remain free. NS will always be free. Let me say it again. NS will always be free.

You may be able to buy it in the store, but if you don't want to, you'll always be able to download it. We're not ever taking NS away from the masses.
