Field Guide Refresher
***This is TSA Command broadcasting a universal message to all Frontiersmen***
Before engaging in any further extermination missions please read and memorize the following.
It has come to the attention of TSA Command that the soldiers in the field have begun to show some deplorable habits and execute unsanctioned procedures. This Document should refresh you all of your training and remind you of what you are here to do, and how you are to do it!
The Kharaa have recently enhanced their gene pool yet again, and now is the time for strict discipline and squad tactics if we are to free ourselves of this menace! In the past it has been acceptable for us to simply monitor hive positions and forward bases with multiple turrets while we ourselves sit back at home base, throwing dice and resting easy. This "tactic" is no more. The aliens have learned that simply destroying our turret factories will shut down all turrets in the radius. Due to this we must deploy not only turrets, but armed sqads at ALL forward bases if they are to survive, bring your welders to keep the factories healthy between alien attacks! Watch your squad mate's backs at all times, if a soldier is welding you must cover him at all times, an unfinished job is wasted resources!
In the past your commanders have been given nearly unlimited resources with which to combat the Kharaa, but now the aliens have spread so far that resources must be thinned out. This has two affects on you as soldiers. First, you may no longer be given your first choice of equipment, do not take this as an excuse to be insubordinate, your commander will outfit you based on available resources and the current tactical situation, take what you are given and use it to the best of your ability soldier! Second, the past reliance on heavy armor and heavy weapons has created a lax in squad tactics, this ends NOW! Never leave base without a partner, preferably more than one, and head to your assigned waypoints with haste. Stick together, use eachother's strengths and compensate for eachother's weaknesses. Only through coordination and intelligence can we defeat this threat!
The time of our reliance on automated turrets and superior armament is over. Make no mistake soldiers, we are now in the biggest ground war ever fought in this universe. Use your weapons, use your minds, and above all, use eachother and we will win this war!
Finally, a note to commanders. Be aware that with the current state of the war your resources are going to be stretched thin. Do not overbuild turrets expecting them to win the day. A heavily armored marine is worth multiple turrets, as they are more versatile and can respond to many situations. Keep your men outfitted and your ear to the comm and you will lead us to victory!
See your local commanders for new assignments, Luck and Victory to us all!

and very true also, for the marines to win after the 1.01 patch they need to work as a team and not to rely on their old strategys.

very nice, gets me in the ns mood!
On the other hand its extremley fun to play with a commander who has experience, and knows what he is doing. Its almost like playing a completley diffrent game.

I think this deserves a sticky. But that's just my 2 cents.
I think he is ABSOLUTELY correct, a good/decent commander + coordinated troops can be DEADLY. I have played more aliens than marines, but I have an extraordinary experience just yesterday being a marine on Nothing. Our commander wasn't the most troop-caring commander but he saved up to get us HAs and HMGs later. During a 10-minute period one of our nodes were pounded by Bile Bombs and pairs of Onos WAVE after WAVE. We managed to fight ALL of them off, and we only had 3 turrets in the room. How? We had 2 or 3 marines running in circles around the turrets, so whenever an Onos charged towards one of us we would just run in circles around the turret (or pole, or anything that obstructs) letting all the other marines slowly take him down. And mind u, by then NONE of us had HA or HMG, we beat them with our BRAINS.
Before I go, another tip for the newly recruited marines: Don't just EXPECT ur firepower to overcome the alien, HIDE behind structures, COORDINATE with ur teammate, if u're expecting Onos, find a HIGH-ELEVATED place to hide (POSITION POSITION POSITION), and most importantly, RETREAT is ACCEPTABLE, if u see 3 Fades charging at you, DON'T just backpedal and spray your LMG, TURN AROUND AND RUN, it costs the Commander a lot of resources to re-equip you, and backpedalling is a BIG NO-NO in Natural-Selection.

Don't strafe in front of other marines. Sure, their fire might not hurt you, but it sure as hell isn't hurting the aliens either.
Don't split up.
If you aren't where your commander told you to be, don't be suprised when your requests for ammo and health go unanswered.
Group up.
Equipment is very expensive. If you waste it by chasing an alien halfway across the map and get eaten by a Skulk, you've just wasted time and money that could be spent doing something productive.
Have a partner. Have as many as possible.
Don't ask for weapons and armor. If you're commander has anything on the ball, he'll realize that equipped marines are winning marines.
Think of your squadmates as children. Not only are they impetuous little toads who think nothing of the greater good, without children the human race can't survive. Neither will you without your squad.

FADE OF THE WEEK

Pre-1.01 I played Aliens for the sheer challenge of turret-whoring 'rines, exploited resource bugs, and 'rines wearing nothing but heavy armor and a HMG. And when you have HA/HMG, you aren't scared of skulks. Now that the resource bug is fixed, 'rines are fun to play as because the teams are balanced. As a marine, you are afraid of a crackling rush. You are afraid of that 3rd hive and that big gigantic Kharaa ( ). You go by yourself; you're a skulks next meal.
I find myself playing more Marine than alien now.
Happy Hunting.

I knew when I saw you at the Academy that great things were before you. You climbed fast, worked hard, and have proven time and again why the TSA made the right choice in basing you at TSA Command.
If I may, as a fellow officer, back up and emphasise your fine words with a few suggestions for our brave and talented marines.
Listen up men, these words will save your skin and the skin of your comrades:
* Stick together. Running off alone assures you a quick and painful death at the hand of the Kharaa. There are no live heroes in the TSA, only dead ones.
There is power in numbers -- the Kharaa know this, as you have no doubt found out already. If your comrades have fallen, hightail back to base or hold your position and request backup. Do not go in alone soldier, your commander can't bring you back from the dead.
* Follow your orders. Always. You can't see the big picture like your commander can. If he sets a waypoint for you, there's a very good reason he did so. Stop what you're doing, and move to it immediately. It doesn't matter if you're in the middle of attacking a hive -- go to the waypoint at once. You may be losing vital ground elsewhere and your backup is required.
Ignoring your orders is a sure fire way to lose the war for your team.
There are varying calibres of commander. Even if you think you have more real-world experience than a green officer right out of the Academy, give him the benefit of the doubt. Don't tell him how to do his job, trust in his decisions. We have a hard time enough fighting the Kharaa, we can do without fighting amongst ourselves. When your time comes to command, you'll appreciate the same co-operation from your men.
* Work with your commander. Report often of your findings and, when requesting resources, use the command menu -- this way he can find you quickly. Keep in mind he has to manage the whole squad so while your request may not materialise immediately, keep in mind he has heard you and will get to you as soon as he can. Repeat the request at regular intervals in case he has been swamped in his duties, but do not spam him -- you will only slow him down.
* Use your grey matter. Don't forget your military schooling so soon, soldier. Big guns will not win the war against the Kharaa. Teamwork, communication, and strategy will. A dose of common sense goes a long way as well.
When you patrol the corridors, use your flashlight and check the dark corners. If you hear the Kharaa nearby, turn it off to avoid alerting them to your presence.
The Kharaa excel at stealth, but they're not the only ones who can move silently. Unless you've been tagged by those horrible parasites, crouch and move slowly into a new area -- you may be able to surprise them for a change and take one down before it knows what hit it.
Don't wait before your clip is empty to reload. Reload always, at any 'quiet moment' during a fight. If you see it getting low, pull back around the corner and reload. Nothing assures a quicker marine death than being in range of Kharaa melee attacks whilst you're reloading. If you die this way, solider, you deserve it.
And lastly, a few tips for the fresh commanders out there:
* Short, sharp and sweet. Command the squad to take and hold an area one zone at a time. Do not move until the area is fortified. Move like a wall of human will from area to area -- secure, build, defend, and move -- and so on. Wether you are capturing resource points or securing corridors against the Kharaa, you will die if you spread out.
* Capture remote resource points first. After fortifying your base, send one squad to capture remote resource points immediately. This not only secure resources for you men, but it takes away quick resources zones from the Kharaa. Fortify them well, for once the Kharaa have realised what you have done they will throw everything at them. Remaining points closer to home can then taken at your leisure.
* This isn't a damn shopping mall! Use every resource point wisely, don't go spending your cash like you're a schoolgirl with daddy's credit card -- your resources are limited, everything you buy could make or break your assault on the Kharaa. Don't go chasing after HA when the Arms Lab can provide three levels of upgraded armor for your men -- which once researched provides increased armor protection at no cost from then on for every soldier that teleports in. HA is a luxury, not a necessity. If you're buying HA before you have three levels of armor upgrades from the Arms Lab, you should be shot. More than that tell me your schooling commander at the Academy, and I'll have him shot too.
* This is a damn shopping mall! If, at any time, you have resources ticking up past 100 you're not doing your job! Your men are out there being torn apart at the hands of the Kharaa, and you're sitting on a stockpile of turrets, heavy weapons, and drop-in health and ammo kits! Unless victory is near and you own the battleground, you have no reason to be hoarding resources -- spend them or we'll put a schoolgirl who knows how to spend in the command chair!
* Sweep it baby. I think many commanders skipped chapter 12 of the 'Official TSA manual for the divination and eliminaton of xenophobes' manual, the one that specifically deals with scanner sweeps, affectionally called pings by those who use them.
Be like those who use them, and use them! They reveal a wealth of information for the commander and men nearby, including the location of cloaked alien scum. It's also one of the few things that scares a Kharaa -- knowing that their secret little bases and minions are known to the forces of the superior TSA marines!
That's it for now men. You are doing the TSA proud, and while the war on the Kharaa could seemingly swing both ways at the moment you and I both know that eventually the TSA will prevail. Or die trying.
First Commander Martigen
Tactical Operations Division
TSA Central
looking forward to more of the same.
Peace

I didn't figure I should start a new thread for this so I just tacked it onto this already useful post. Speaking of which, good writing!
"And his name... was... Icculus!
Written by the great and knowledgeable Icculus.
Yes! Our children are old enough to read Icculus (ridiculous)."
Don't build all your sgs on the same side of the turret factory I've several times as skulk ran past the sgs, and hid behind the factory. Sgs shoot factory (hmm wonder if it would do damage in tournament mode?) and I chomp away in peace w/o them being able to hit me.
For critical location build multiple factorys covering the same sgs, but don't put them close together! You don't want a fade's bilebombs takeing them out all at once, or letting onos have an easy time to get from one to the next.
i was wrong
i think the turret power supply is a GREAT idea. i LOVE this little story added to it. good pings own lol. this was yet another great move by the NS-team members.

I should play as Marines more, it was usually 9 v 5 so I haven't had much chance to play as them yet. Hopefully thanks to the patch I will now though.
I also think it's good that Marines cannot rely on turrets anymore. Sure, they're handy, but nothing beats a pair of marines with biological eyes, not mechanical. =)
