Hurricane Charley

GrillkohleGrillkohle Join Date: 2003-12-23 Member: 24695Members, Constellation
Hurricane Charley is now approaching the Gulf Coast of Florida, and has grown up to a category 4 hurricane (opposed to the category 2 that it was yesterday when it hit Cuba, category 5 is the largest).

Well, what can I say, the eye is going to (most likely) pass right over my house tonight at ~11 PM EST. <img src='http://image.weather.com/images/maps/tropical/strm3_strike_720x486.jpg' border='0' alt='user posted image' />
I will stay here upstairs until then and once it gets bad move downstairs, and put my PC under my bed. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Lets just hope it doesn't get too bad.

Great I live in Winter Garden (10 miles west of Downtown Orlando) and the hurricane will either pass right over my house, hit the Kissimmee area (which is 25 miles southeast of Winter Garden), or go right between Winter Garden and Kissimmee and hit Orlando dead-on.

So far haven't received any evacuation warnings, only tornado warnings. The funny thing is that all the people on the Gulf Coast of Florida fled to Orlando to get away for the storm, well all they did was move right into its path. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Didn't even bother getting plywood or supplies. Went to Wal-Mart yesterday; water and batteries were plenty but everyone bought EVERY LAST PACKAGE of cookies, ice cream, and pasteries from the bakery-bastards.

I'm really wishing I paid that extra 300 dollars a year for flood insurance since there's my subdivision's man-made lake 75 feet from my house and the huge Lake Apopka a mile away.

Bah, and I was in Los Angeles for a job for the past three months and just came back yesterday; if only I waited a few days. Oh well, at least I can entertain myself by attacking looters if my house is destroyed, or loot destoryed homes if mine makes it through in one piece.

And it is my wife's birthday today, and I made reservations at Victoria's and Albert's (best restaurant in Florida which sports a six month waiting list for reservations) but it was closed today.

Anyway I'm going to step outside to shake my fist at the sky and yell obsenities in the general direction of the hurricane.

I'm at the left side of the cone on that prediction, right around dinner saturday.

Fortunately I live in a solid house that isn't anywhere near a floodplain, so the worst I've ever suffered from a hurricane is a severly frightened rabbit and a few missing pieces of siding.

After this weekend, and the one gimpy and one fairly potent hurricanes, I imagine that no one in Florida will even want to look at water for a while.

edit: well that was a bust. Less than an inch of rain, and not even as much wind as we get in a typical NC storm (which is a lot, as well as a rather loud sky).

Hoorah for the NorthEast, where all we get is the tattered remains of once great storms. Kinda depressing.

Oh noes!!! The hurricane is headed right on up the east coast, through Pennsylvania (where I live) mind you, so I'm screwed. I'm hoping that it will dissapate somewhat before it gets here...otherwise I will have to take drastic measures...such as huggling my PC for the duration of the storm and setting up a hamster wheel powered electricity generator so that I can use my computer. Hey, thats not a bad idea! Anyhow my prayers are with myself...as well as others of course.

Don't you get tornadoes in the middle of the USA?

Here in California, the worst thing we get is the occaisonal earthquake.

Good luck there, you'll need it.

I've been through one of these hurricanes before, and trust me, watching a car fly on TV isn't exactly funny, but still is.

Well that is if hurricanes == typhoons

Uhh...typhoons are spinny, cause big winds, rain, and has an eye. And they make cars and trees fly.

A typhoon is exactly what a hurricane is, it's just a different name used in eastern Asia.
Anyway, the storm is over now for me, it was quite some fun. When it arrived here it was only 90mph winds (category 2 storm), on the west coast of Florida it was a category 4 storm with wind speeds up to 145 mph. So what arrived here was not really that bad, I went outside and had some fun in the rain ^_^.

I already typed a reply in this thread a couple of hours ago, but while I was going for the submit button, I got a short energy loss for about a second. Yay.

Oh, one more thing: It looks like we can have one or two more hurricanes soon. Look at the right and see the two tropical depressions 4 and 5, which could possibly develop to a full scale hurrican in the next week or so.

The bummer of the situation for us Michiganders is that due to the recent cold front that has swept through the state, we will see little to none of the bad weather from this storm. Why did they name it "Charley", anyway? That's a strange spelling of the name...

Yay for living up north! Worst we've had was a crapload of rain this summer. Farmers complained for years about the droughts, and now they're complaining about the water :S Suffice it to say, we've had more rain in the past 2 months than in the past few years. But no chance of a hurricane <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

On these days I'm happy that I live in British Columbia. I hope all you guys living in the hurricane zone are ok. They say this one's almost as big as Hurricane Andrew <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> .

This sorta reminds me of one of the more popular Bash.org quotes:

    #6441: "AFK, tornado"

    Possibly the shortest bit of humour I've ever seen <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

meh, that's a maby not a must, for all they know the plates could be sliding nice and cleanly over eachother. Asside from the occational earthquake, we are pretty much impervious to everything, even meteor caused title waves whould just hit vancouver island and pretty much miss us compleatly, and when yellowstone goes, were about 300 miles north of being seriously affected by it (other than the massive amount of smoke it spews into the air, causeing global cooling).

I live at the tip of South Carolina (the westmost tip), and all I can say for Charley is that it made the skies go gray a little bit.

*makes a dramatic jump directly to his right*

    Whew! Missed it just barely!
