<div class="IPBDescription">does it matter?</div> <a href='http://www.advocate.com/new_news.asp?ID=13388&sd=08/13/04' target='_blank'>N.J. governor comes out, will resign November 15</a>

<!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->New Jersey governor James E. McGreevey confirmed on Thursday that he is ****, has had an extramarital affair with another man, and will resign from office on November 15, one year before his term ends.

"My truth is that I am a **** American," McGreevey said. "Shamefully, I engaged in an adult consensual affair with another man, which violates my bonds of matrimony," said the married father of two daughters by two wives. His first marriage ended in divorce.

"I have decided the right course of action is to resign," McGreevey said. Although his coming out publicly is a moment that he wished would pass, he said, "it cannot and should not pass.

"This is an intensely personal decision and not one typically for the public domain," McGreevey said.

Rumors had been circulating for several years that McGreevey was ****, reaching the level of open hints on New Jersey talk-radio shows. The man involved in the affair, a former government employee, demanded "an exorbitant sum of money to make it go away," a high-ranking administration official told the Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity. Cabinet members and administration officials learned of that threat Wednesday night, the source said.

ABC News is reporting that the timing of McGreevey's announcement was determined by a lawsuit being filed today by Golan Cipel, a former adviser to the governor on homeland security. The lawsuit will reportedly allege sexual misconduct by the governor.

A former Israeli sailor and a published poet, Cipel also worked as a spokesman for the Israeli Consulate in New York. He was originally hired as McGreevey's lead security adviser in February 2002. He resigned a month later after questions were raised about his background but was kept on the government payroll at $110,000 a year. For months the administration refused to say what Cipel did for the state. He was seldom seen in public and was often the topic of intrigue among the media.

The Advocate will continue to update this story as details become available. To read McGreevey's complete remarks, click here.

McGreevey, 47, the state's 51st governor, took office 2-1/2 years ago, and despite inheriting a $5 billion budget deficit, he steadfastly refused to boost income taxes for most New Jerseyans, instead raising taxes on millionaires, casinos, and cigarettes. But he has been dogged by several scandals involving fund-raising.

McGreevey, a Democrat, rose from suburban mayor to state chief executive by his tenacious pursuit of party politics, maintaining a power base after he narrowly lost to Republican Christie Whitman in 1997. McGreevey never truly stopped that campaign until he won in November 2001, beating Republican Bret Schundler by 15 percentage points.

Born in Jersey City, McGreevey graduated from Columbia University in 1978. He earned a law degree from Georgetown University in 1981 and a master's degree in education from Harvard University a year later. After briefly serving as a county prosecutor, McGreevey became a lobbyist for a pharmaceutical company, then a state government official. While in the legislature, McGreevey voted for Gov. Jim Florio's $2.8 billion tax hike, which prompted a voter rebellion against Democrats.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I don't know why I'm posting this because I know a lot of people are going to say things that'll make me mad =P but personally, I think it's silly that he's resigning, and he should make a statement by NOT resigning. I mean, I guess on one hand, Clinton was almost impeached because of HIS affair, so maybe it's smart to play it safe... but on the other hand, WTH does personal life have to do with these people being the good leaders that they are?

edit: I guess, though, that if this guy he was seeing was not just an affair but also a paid government concubine at $110k/year, it's pretty scandalous...

He's just using the whole g@y rights issue to have an excuse to resign. He was having major financial issues from day one, he just saw this as a way out.

Clinton WAS impeached, but it didn't lead to removal from office. He was impeached because he lied under oath.

This governor is resigning because there's going to be a sexual harrasment suit against him, and he gave his boyfriend a job and a lot of government money, when he wasn't supposed to.

Congressman William Janklow was found guilty of <b>manslaughter</b> and got less news coverage.

If being **** is supposed to be so readily excepted then why must such publisized events be held for something that is supposed to be not that big of a deal?

War and terrorism are issues that affect the world at large, a governor coming out of the closet is not.

one thing i don't enjoy about the g'ay stereotype is that g'ays are always portrayed as pure souls... "all we want is to exist peacefully with the rest of you..!!"

just because you're [insert minority] doesn't mean you're an angel..

see how everyone focuses on this g'ay governor's... g'ayness? and not the fact that he just SCREWED OVER his entire family?

oh yay, yet another reason to be ashamed of NJ, a governer who weasles out of trouble with a "I like teh mansecks" defense. To each his own, you tard, to each his own.

nj is teh win. don't be dissin' on my state.

I'm not all that political, but I felt like he was doing a pretty good job. he didn't screw over his wife and kids - at least not on purpose - because he didn't realize he was g@y til recently, apparently. and anyway, face it: the truth of politicians' families is, 3/4 of the time they're just a front to get votes anyway, because it's near impossible to be single and get elected to anything, without having a 'family person' image...

of course even if he was hetero and kept a female mistress on the payroll, it'd suck, but as far as corrupt politicians go, suffice to say there's much worse.

He came out saying he was g*y just to dodge the real issue.

He appointed his non-US citizen lover as head of Homeland Security for NJ. In addition, his lover could not get a security clearance due to his foreign national status. Please don't ignore the fact that this guy did everything he could to bloat the NJ budget. People in NJ get taxed for everything now.

Thanks to Mcgreevy, you now pay 6% tax on BRACES at the orthodontist (in addition to 1000 other little taxes).

So, resign and portray it to be because you are g*y, to draw attention away from the fact that you hired a $110,000 concubine, and nearly ruined NJ (more).
