So...People asking "how are you" don't actually care how you are except when they do.

    ...what?

seph, i'll explain it to you. he's come upon the realization that certain phrases and words in the english language can have different meanings, but still be the same phrase or word.. the part that you probably can't connect to that is the fact that he's overreacting like his discovery is the magical cure for AIDS and cancer all in one :\

    Yeah, that's probably it.

I can't stand most of the standard polite drivel.

My mom still insists on saying "hi", "goodbye" or "how are you feeling" to me every once in a while, even though I've been solidly ignoring these statements for half a decade and never uses them myself unless it's someone I don't know and feel compelled to, but only if they go first.

My friends and I don't even say good bye to each other, the conversation ender is usually "OK..." or "allright..."

It's like the way cliched ideas, phrases, or buzzwords are overused, and eventually become meaningless. Like an evolutionary deadend, these vestigial remains of our lexicon only serve as a social buffer like saying "um..." or "like" while we think of something useful to say.

    I hope, like, you can, um.. see where i'm like going with this. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I find somthing along the lines of 'how is life treating you', or 'what have you been up to' or even 'how have you been' serves the same purpose of inviting the other person to start a conversation.
[N.B. my verbal communication is terrible]

though theres really nothing wrong and certainly nothing rude about asking how someone is.. its acepted manners.

what i do find annoying is when people get arsey if you dont ask them back.
Theres a guy at my work who will always go "oh fine thanks" really sarcastically if you dont ask him back, and I find it so mechanical to stop and say "good thanks [pause] and how are you?" whenever he asks me how I am.

No, you're simply responding to a pseudo question in hope of reviving the true context of the question. The one who is performing the wrong-doing is the person asking you the question. He doesn't actually care whether you're hungry or low on cash. <!--QuoteEnd--> </td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'> <!--QuoteEEnd-->
£10 bets you couldn't even pronounce "pseudo"!

Don't even get me started on the use of LOL. It would make you <b>actually</b> laugh out loud, not some pseudo LOL.

I knew someone once who said LOL instead of laughing. Even on the funniest jokes, he'd go, "THAT IS LOLOLOLOL (Loll-oll-oll-oll)". I "accidentally" shoved him off a cliff and he was never heard from again.

Seriously though omg it was the scariest thing ever... he would ALWAYS say it, to the stupidest things.

Holy Jesus, just leave it alone...Don't go so deep into the semantics of wordplay; it''ll leave you more doubtful and curious, like a thought of thoughts.....

    What do I say?

    "What's up man?"
    "it's cool."
    "yea?"
    "yea..."
"well ya know...hl2 is gunna be 1337."
    "nekkid pix?"
    "ohlolol u said nekkid pix.."

You see; like stupid stuff. I suggest you put your good sense of logic in math or the bigger questions of life: metaphysics. Anyway, it was interesting to hear it different.

We should just return to the nineteenth century English how d' ye do (pronounced as one word). They didn't even expect an answer.
