You want to read the FAQ thread at the top of this forum, it has links to lots of useful stuff.. including the NS mapping guidelines, the quick start guide and other goodies. The best place for map-type questions is VERC ( links in thread ) .

If you have NS you should ( afaik) have everything you need, except Valve Hammer Editor ( free from VERC or most coverdisks/valve games) and compile tools.

Get Zoners compile tools, or whatever the latest version is from VERC. They are much better than the ones that come with Hammer/ WorldCraft, much more helpful error messages etc..

Hint: Use the search function on the VERC forums. They know everything tbh..

Handy Vandals has lots of tutorials, as does Counter-Map, Snarkpit and loads of others ( either follow the links or google 'em.)

Read all the tutorials you can find, play around with ideas etc, have fun.

I believe Hammer is quite similar to some Q2 editors so you might find it all very easy.

    Good Luck!

well considering half lifes engine started out as the Q2 engine i cant see why not.

Actually Half-Life uses a heavily modified Quake I engine, not Quake II.

And if there's something at the top of the page that says "Read this before posting!" it might just be a good idea to actually read it.

Oh, there are similarities all right, but the point is the entity system used in HL is far more complex than Quake, and NS puts standard HL to shame.

    First, I'm going to point you <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?act=ST&f=4&t=8143' target='_blank'>Here</a>

Next, I have to agree with Greedo. You could not be further from the truth. Mapping for NS is VERY different and extremely hard, Most of the experienced NS mappers have constantly over and over again recommended that you NEVER start with mapping for NS if you are new to mapping. I know that you've done maps for q2, but still I suggest you do some HL SP maps or something first before moving on to NS

    ^

    That's true....

    It's bloody difficult.

I only started recently on Hammer, but I reckon I could fire up a playable HLDM map in a couple of days, but a good NS map might take a few months, if, and thats IF I ever make one thats up to standard....

    Oooo Aint they GOOD!!?

    :exit suckup mode....

It is sooooo fiddly, although , now I've actually had a go at the game I feel I have a LOT better idea as to what I should be aiming for...

If nothing else, I now understand what the PT's meant when they said " Look, that will be impossible as Aliens, chuck a vent in here, make that a sneaky alien-only shortcut...."

Ah well, I now know 3 times as much about Hammer as I did before I started...

btw, will it be considered "dodgy" when I make a map with horrible secret pasages that only I know about?

    Or is that just realistic....?

    /me demands a possible slightly-cheaty-win solution..<!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html/emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' valign='absmiddle' alt='biggrin.gif'><!--endemo-->
