Babblers have been removed (<!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->) due to the heavy server-side CPU useage they entailed, their buggy behaviour, and the fact that BileBomb had to replace something after coming from fade to gorge.
they were much loved since it would be quite hard to get a babbler kill, and the sprite for babbler kills were so nifty.
It was useful if you needed those 2 seconds before the skulks arived to pull your bacon outa the fire.
So long as you knew how to use em you could do decently with em.
The basic trick was to give them a nice clear LOS on a rine so they just had to run in one dirrection.
This could be combined with the fact that when fired the 'launched' straight for a few feet, and that could be increased by looking up and jumping when you fired, much as you would do with a grenade.
So, all you had to do was stand around a corner, look up, jump, and fire so that when they reached the point where the AI kicked in they would have a nice clear LOS to sometihng to munch on <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
If I ever was discovered as a gorge and had babblers available, I would drop 1-2 and run. Often, marines would confuse them for real skulks and concentrate on them while I escaped.
One of the main reasons they were not as useful was because you could only get them at the third hive. In earlier NS versions once you had the third hive the game was pretty much over. Or the marines were so tech'd up that you were dead meat as a lone gorge.

And, of course, 3rd hive = the dreaded onos.
I played NS for 5 months before actually ever seeing one. I saw it in the ready room and was all:
"OMG a rhino!"
Much to the embarrasment of myself and the person who introduced me to ns. <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
Ah, gone are the days when onos was an end-game weapon as opposed to the HMG "meat-shield" fodder...
my first onos was a friken cloaked one with in the first week of playing.
I had jumped in late and was going to destroy an alien node.
As I walk down the ramp he appeared right infront of me and horribly murtilated me <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I used to know what that file was for...
oh, and for getting bablers to not sink?
thats why you aimed up and jumped <!--emo&:p--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/tounge.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='tounge.gif' /><!--endemo-->
I also remember unsticking a fade, twice in the same game(we had allready lost, I wasn't too keen on prolonging the game), as a marine back when blink was horribly buggy and alot of players didn't know how to use it properly(the server didn't have a /stuck plugin of any kind either). He had redemption so when I knifed him just to be annoying he redeemed(not on purpose this time). The very same fade got stuck in the very same grate a few minutes later, so I spammed the taunt message and started knifing away. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
lol. I think that's the first case of a living thing appreciating being mutilated. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
