Squall is a badass. Hands down, he's the most badass character in FF ever. Just look at him. I can hear Rinoa telling Squall:
"Hey baby, I love you."
"Yeah, I don't care, go get me my sword so I can hack something."
I want his bomber jacket. His hair is amazingly badass as well.
FF 8 is one of the most badass in the series. It has the highly addicting, simple card game, amazing cut scenes (the first one, and the one where the Garden is getting invaded are the most memorable cut scenes EVER). It's one of my favorite ones. Unfortunatly, the story gets only so-so after disc 3.
Man, how can you people like anything from FF8 at all...I thought with the more realistic graphics it would be a little more mature. That game was so childish (the whole series is but ff8 was the worst) that I couldn't even play past that spider robot mission. When a character in an RPG starts calling me a chicken-wuss thats where I draw the goddamn line. God, this reminds me of how much I hate Japanese RPGs in general. How are you going to make an RPG with a cowboy in it...I hated every character in FF8 argh.
O.k they messed up his character and he came off as whiney as opposed to tough and arrogant like they were obviously going for, but who cares, he has a freaking gunblade!
Close second would be either Irvine from FF8 or Yuna's outfit from FFX. Her outfit in FFX-2, and that whole game for that matter was a sin against mankind.
FF8 has hands down the BEST ending ever, so many games screw everything up with a rushed or anticlimatic ending, but FF8 tied up all the loose ends in a stunning 45 minute cutscene, and got the message across despite the lack of speech. I think speech would have made the ending infinately worse anyway...

Heh, Tidus wasn't really very annoying...now think about Squall. If they had put voice acting in ff8 Squall would have this stupid drawl 'oh man im such a whiney loser, i think i have so many problems and im so much more sophisticated and complex than everyone else'. Actually I bet you they would've gotten Keanu Reeves to play Squall. When I read the review of FF8 at GameSpot I couldn't believe it got past the editors. I will never ever understand why people say cloud was so awesome and squall sucked... if anyone was pointlessly emotionless and wannabe badass, it was cloud... cloud was the one who pushed everyone away, the one who couldn't save a fly and wouldn't even want to...
as for squall, he's like, the anti-whiner, I don't know where anyone could get 'he's a whiner' from... throughout the game, he gets **** off at everyone ELSE for whining and not taking care of themselves... and the game itself doesn't even take his beginning attitude too seriously -- from the first scene, Quistis is teasing Squall for his predictable loner act -- and it's just brilliant foreshadowing, because it tells you that he can't keep it up forever, and he doesn't -- he lets rinoa in, and she makes him a new man...
and as for phrases like 'chicken-wuss' -- I don't know what the original Japanese was, but that phrase really gets the meaning across. It's silly and demeaning at the same time, exactly what siefer wanted to say to zell... and reading Squaresoft translations isn't always about simply reading what's on the screen and taking it at face value -- you have to read behind the lines, and get comfortable with the culture that spawned the game... even if some phrases come out sounding silly, you can almost always get a feel for what they MEANT to say...
to stay off topic, it makes me sad that the dream characters, laguna, ward, and kiros, have cooler weapons IMO than the main characters <!--emo&:0--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/wow.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='wow.gif' /><!--endemo--> I mean, yeah, the idea of a gunblade is pwn, but watching the dream characters shoot monsters with an uzi and throw giant harpoons at them simply beats watching things like a sword with a trigger, a whip, a boomerang gun thingy, etc... I should start another topic on coolest FF weapons but that'd probably be going overboard =p

I think what it boils down to is FF7 appeals more to a sci-fi crowd, and FF8 appeals to the fiction inclined crowd... that is, FF7 is about the slow revelation of various scientific events that shaped the characters, and FF8 is about the characters themselves...
Laguna DOES rule though... so many more layers to his character than the game gets into; such a sad story...

The reason people prefer cloud over squall is that Cloud's character development is a LOT more involving. The memory scene in kalm, Sephiroth's mind games, the rebuilt town, the lifestream part. There's so much there which shows you why Cloud is who is is.
Whereas Squall mostly remains as Mr. "dot dot dot" until he decides OMG I LUV RINOA.
Laguna was the only decent character in that game, IMO. Shame you couldn't enlist him to your party :/
As for weapon....Vincent's Outsider/Winchester. Or Cloud's Organics/hard edge.

I dunno... I guess you're saying is FF7 is about slowly reavealing why cloud is the cold annoying person he is? while FF8 just starts with the assumption squall is cold and annoying, but is about how and why he changes and becomes a better person... that's the story I'd personally rather read...
I think what it boils down to is FF7 appeals more to a sci-fi crowd, and FF8 appeals to the fiction inclined crowd... that is, FF7 is about the slow revelation of various scientific events that shaped the characters, and FF8 is about the characters themselves...
Laguna DOES rule though... so many more layers to his character than the game gets into; such a sad story...
