Overclocking Madness!

Or, Doc's adventures on the wild side...
So, I've decided to try and overclock my AMD processor so I can play HL2 well. Right now, I've got a Athlon XP2500(+, i think). What would be a safe speed to overclock to? How does one overclock? Would it affect my PC's performance much? Any warnings/advice/guides I should see? I figured I'd try here before googling, because I'm sure I'd end up looking at porn if I went on Google.

Don't bother. That processor is going to run HL2 just fine and you're only going to lower your CPU's life if you overclock it.

Your processor is just dandy for the running of HL2. As long as you have a decent vid card you should get great FPS.

If that is an older 2500+ (unlocked), it should be a great overclocker. I used to have one, got it easily to about 2.3 ghz on air cooling

Veritable, although by the time that happens there will be a graphics card the size of a motherboard.

Or the size of a NIC now. Either way, it's neglegable.

It is said that a cpu can last 25 years at stock speeds, overclocking to the max brings it down to around 5. I have yet to use one computer for 5 years.
