Ns Crashing My New System

About 20-35 min into a game
When I’m about 20-35 minutes into Natural Selection, my machine crashes. It will loop the last sound that I heard and the screen will freeze. I can’t ctr-alt-del out of it, the only solution is to reboot. At first, I thought it only happened while commanding, but that’s not the case.

System Specs:
Dell Dimension 8400
P4 3.2GHz
XP Pro
1 GB Ram
256 PCI Express x800 XT
SoundBlaster Audigy 2

Honestly, NS is the only game I’ve played on here so far, so I have nothing to compare the crash against. Other than in-game, my machine performs flawlessly.

How can I figure out what the problem is? Any tips?!

i get the same porb (but it crashes only when i quit the game) - no other mods only NS. my only conclusion is that a memory leak happens at some point.

do you use scripting? or any other changes to the game?

    Overheating? Hum.

    Nothing overclocked?

    Latest drivers?

    Oh, nice rig.

No - I don't use scripting.... my game play hasn't changed since moving over to this machine, and I never had this problem on my other machine.

Over Heating.... how does one diagnose that? Is there a program that tells me if that is the problem?

    Yes, nothing overclocked.

    Latest drivers installed for everything.

Thanks for the feedback thus far... keep it coming!

I am sure there is something that will monitor/test overheating. You can take case cover off and run a fan on and play. See if you get same problem.

I never had occasion to run temp progs. Maybe someone knows of one. But if what I said helps, well??? You can google for one.

    Potential Culprit: Internet Connection…

Could a sporadic internet connection be the cause of my problem? Every time this happened to me my DSL was being flaky. Either on SBC’s side or somewhere between my house and the server – my ping would be fine right around 72 and often jump upwards of 400. It was the games where I had a questionable internet connection that it would crash in game. The past few nights I’ve had a great connection and no crashes.

    Gray Duck,

I dont think there is anything wrong with your computer. I have the same problem (even posted a topic with the same name ). Anyway, it happens to me within 20-30 minutes of gameplay, and only on NS. I can play CS, and HL for as long as i want, but it keeps crashing on NS for some odd reason. My conclusion, is that there is something wrong with (our) NS, or steam. There could possibly be something wrong with your internet connection if you are with Bigpond Broadband, as i cannot join GA servers with CS or NS, and this might have something to do with the crash.
Unfortuneatly i dont have any solutions, and i have tried reinstalling both steam, and NS, and deleting all files off my PC before reinstalling. I even tried downloading patches from another mirror. Sorry for the help... but doesnt it feel good to know ur not the only one who has crap NS.
