B5 Patch Status?

ace0manace0man Join Date: 2003-05-17 Member: 16422Members, Constellation
<div class="IPBDescription">What is going on!? News is a good thing!</div> Well I've looked on the main page and had a bit of a hunt around, and I can’t see any information on what is going on with the beta5 patch.

I have been waiting to start a tournament and don’t want the hassle/hold ups with starting and only to find out that the patch is then released.

I assume that now the CPL has started (Even though it appears that there are not any ns tournaments <a href='http://www.thecpl.com/extreme/index2.php?p=tournaments)' target='_blank'>http://www.thecpl.com/extreme/index2.php?p=tournaments)</a> that the patch will not be released for sometime?

Could I (we?) have some confirmation on this as the main page seems to be scare of such information.

Thanks for your time.

    1) It will be ready when it's done.
    2) It is mostly bug fixes.
    3) The devs do not know when this is, as a few large bugs are delaying release.

    <span style='color:white'>Be nice.</span>

It’s a simple question, and ties in with what was said on the main page about the CPL, but have yet to had an update since then.

It’s nice to keep your fans and people organizing events up-to-date so that we can achieve maximum enjoyment from the game.

His answer is actually dead on. There's a few bugs that are holding back release. Until said bugs are fixed, they will continue holding back release. There is no timeline.

But you most remember that "<i>mostly bug fixes</i>" can be very important updates for tournaments. Also those "<i>few big bugs</i>", were actually only 2 bugs, and 1 of those can only be fixed by VALVe.

The mentioned problems holding up release were the PSHB (see stickied thread if you don't know what's going on here) and that obviously can't be holding it up anymore, and a crash for listenservers. Don't know anything about that. Can't even find it in the bugtracker actually. I think there are a few other problems implementing some bugfixes. Gestation on flat surfaces, knockback, jetpack performance changes, have all been listed with their fixes not quite working.

I'm sure the devs want to release the new version as much as we'd like to have it. Your best indicator is the bug tracker, keep an eye on that for an idea of how soon the release is coming.

PSHB is a valve problem according to another thread so nothing for the devs to do there?

The problem about frontpage updates right now is that we see an intense amount of back-end work on site and game, which moves the rest back in the priorities a little.

In any case, Dragon_Mechs answer is basically correct. Seeing that the deadline CPL has passed, it makes no sense to leave Beta 5, which is, as you might know, an attempt at creating a clean slate, shoddy. This does <i>not</i> mean "that the patch will not be released for sometime", 'some time' referring to any timeframe not measured in days. Thief and voog are in crunch mode, we'll see results soon.

And we all are learning to associate the word "soon" with the Valve patch on PSHB, B5, HL2, and the BUS.

[conspiracy]Does this mean that they're all going to come out at the same time?[/conspiracy]

With the amount of BW availble on Steam's content server you would need an insane botnet to ddos it down. I don't believe a crap of Valve's excuses, Valve has lost much of its credibility for various known reasons (sure cs-fanboys will always be in the sect..). Funny how Valve blames ddos everytime their content servers get overloaded, and funny how everytime that happens there is an update released.

I don't give a damn about the "be patient" "give it some time". Why should I? I paid for my game I've every right to play it whenever I want, also to whine on the game's distro system. <!--emo&--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/mad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='mad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

the thing with the CPL hardly matters anymore, considering only 6 or 7 NS players showed up.

To log into the bugtracker, the name is "guest" and the password is "guest". This allows you access to only view bugs flagged as public (private ones are ones that can be seriously exploited, or otherwise need to be kept away from us).

Were you trying to say that the patch will be released 'soon'?

I used to be really opposed to Steam; when it first came out I hated it along with everyone else because there were so many bugs. I think Valve has made up for their past mistakes, keeping in mind that a lot of people forgot that they were still testing it when they made it publicly available. I don't think they're making up that DDoS attack because if you think of 100's of machines sending maximum sized packets as fast as they can in addition to 100,000+ players playing a game in real-time it's going to have quite an effect. I was online (EARLY morning) when they got attacked and it was pretty crippling but thousands of players were still able to make it online.

The b5 patch will be released 'soon' because the team is close enough to finishing that they were confident enough to make release dates. They may not have met them, but working past a deadline tends to make people work faster to get it out as soon as possible because they feel more pressure from the tens of thousands of people who realize that they're late. I know this 'tournament' or whatever you're talking about must seem pretty important in your eyes but in reality it's not that big of a deal. The patch will be out eventually, just wait for it.

    1. They've 3.33gbit/s bw availble at the current time. On average maybe one bot could do 0.5mbit/s. Calculate that and see how many would be needed. I'm not saying it's impossible, it is very possible. But what a stupid target to choose...

    2. How did they make things up? Before the code was stolen Valve said that the game was close to finish and would be released last September, later it turned out the code wasn't even close. What was Valve's excuse? "Well we only said late September, not which year.....

Valve begged, said they were seeing themselves as part of the community and expected the community to help them out. The community respected that and did help them out. Next thing we know Steam was dumped on the community despite the amount of people against it. Of course, they knew people would eventually HAVE to switch, all they needed to do was sit back and do nothing. Funny, all the sudden they would basicly say "**** the community, Steam is what will make us money!"

In the end, no matter what happens, or how bad Valve's games turn out to be. If it has something with CS in it, they will sell copies like hell due to the excessive memberships in the CS-cult.

Can, I suggest you move those points into the appropriate forum (found at <a href='http://www.steampowered.com' target='_blank'>Steampowered.com</a>), since nobody reading you here can do anything about your issue.

    Back on track.

    <!--QuoteBegin-ace0man+--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> (ace0man)</td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->Aaagghhhh!

The problem about throwing you any bone more specific is that I'd be running the danger of being a bigger lying scumbag than usual.
Here's the situation: The main work of Beta 5 is being done by voogru and Elven-Thief, Flayra working on BUS and UWE's future. Both are, while amazing coders, not yet fully familiar with NS' source, and while they get as much support as humanly possible, this is almost guaranteed to produce unforseen delays in the already highly unpredictable work of bugfixing. Everyone who ever worked on any piece of code knows that it's always difficult to assert how much time it'll take to identify and fix faults in it.
Beta 5 is, as I said, an attempt at a clan slate - a levelled, bug-cleaned playing field on which more frequent balance updates can be based. It makes little sense to release it before all (or at least as many as possible) big, gameplay affecting faults have been removed. Thus, I can only say this: That (as the bugtracker shows) work is one, at high speed, and that we won't keep the build to ourselves once the job's done.

Let me clarify: LOTS AND LOTS AND LOTS of bug fixes. It boggles the mind how many green-tagged "resolved" bugs have gone past so far in the bugtracker, which can be closed if they confirm the fix when B5 is released.
