X800 Compared To 9800 Pro

MulletMullet Join Date: 2003-04-28 Member: 15910Members, Constellation
<div class="IPBDescription">wweeee</div> Okay I was just wondering HOW much better is the x800 compared to the 9800 pro? I just got my first paycheck for 300 dollars and right away I knew I was going to order an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro ($223).

But then I started to get curious. Is the x800 Pro a lot faster than the 9800? Is it really worth the extra 100 or 150 dollars? Post comments. Thanks <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

As I understand it, the X800s are much faster. If you can wait for another paycheck, I bet you'd be better off with an X800.

    <b>9800 Pro (256MB)</b>
    Clock Speed: 380 MHz
    Rendering Pipelines: 8
    Memory: 256MB
    Pixel Fillrate (Gpixels/sec): 3.04
    Memory Interface: 256 bit
    Memory Type: DDR2
    Geometry Rate: 380 MTriangles

    <b>X800 Pro (256MB)</b>
    Clock Speed: 475 MHz
    Rendering Pipelines: 12
    Memory: 256MB
    Pixel Fillrate (Gpixels/sec): 5.7
    Memory Interface: 256 bit
    Memory Type: GDDR3
    Geometry Rate: 475 MTriangles

    <b>X800 XT-PT (256MB)</b>
    Clock Speed: 520 MHz
    Rendering Pipelines: 12
    Memory: 256MB
    Pixel Fillrate (Gpixels/sec): 8.3
    Memory Interface: 256 bit
    Memory Type: GDDR3
    Geometry Rate: 520 MTriangles

That should help, all from ATI's site. In short, the X800's are a LOT better because of the 4 extra rendering pipelines, not to mention the higher clock speeds and memory speeds.

I have both... (9800 at work and x800 at home).

    Honestly I don't notice a difference.

DISCLAIMER: The only game I've played on both of them is NS. I don't have any other games to compare it with. I think that the 9800 displays HL mods as good as it can be. If anyone's still wondering I'll update after I buy a new game.

Just try a demo. The second FarCry is a good one to test.

Yeah. HL isn't even approaching the limits of the 9800, so the X800 wouldn't be any better. Try them out on FarCry, Doom3 (especially Doom3) or HL2 and you'd notice a big difference.

Okay here's a yes or no question for anyone.

Yes or No...should I spend an extra $240 dollars for the X800 Pro?

I'd say yes. You'll get better performance and some future-proofing.

I'd say no.. Compare the 2. All you get is more Mtriangles, clock speed and filter rate.. I'd just stick with the X800

x800 is such a gigantic leap in terms of performance vs price compared to say, a 9600 to 9800, that the investment is worth it in the long run. Maybe wait until the budget x800s come out?

For the love of god buy an ATI x800 pro VIVO, if anything...

    But yeh, x800Pro totally <!--emo&::asrifle::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/asrifle.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='asrifle.gif' /><!--endemo--> <!--emo&::gorge::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/pudgy.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='pudgy.gif' /><!--endemo--> the 9800Pro. <!--emo&::nerdy::--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/nerd.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='nerd.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I had actually read somewhere (i think it was these forums) that due to some strange HL1 bug ati cards can't run at their optimum performance. I currently own a Radeon 9800Pro <b>128mb</b> and it runs really good. I'm glad I bought it.

Spend 250 and get the Asus 9800 pro 265mb and do a bios flash to make it an Asus radeon 9800xt. Twas what I did and easily saved 150 bucks(at the time). It is yet to let me down. Check newegg and read the review on the aformentioned card to learn how to do it.

Edit:rechecked price. It retails for 250 now. Also newegg seems to have removed all the customer reviews from the card.

Thats basicly what makes nVidia cards better for the upcoming Doom3. Mostly due to ATIs lack of OpenGL support. <!--emo&:(--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/sad.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='sad.gif' /><!--endemo-->

But then Nvidia cards suck bad so it doesn't even matter.

Get it so we can be x800 buddies and gloat to other people on the internet.

Okay first of all, ATI supports OpenGL. I dunno what you're smoking, but stop. Secondly, the reason NVidia owns ATI on Doom3 is because Id and NVidia worked together and the NVidia drivers are SPECIFICALLY tailored for Doom3.

Thanks guys. I think I'll be going for the x800....I might wait a little to see if the price goes down, but that also depends on how patient I am with DOOM3 and my current vid card <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Why did they call it the x800? 10000 sounds better.
  • ironpancakeironpancake Join Date: 2003-05-23 Member: 16643Members
    10 = x in roman numerals. therefore x800 = 10800.

The 9800 Pro seems to be the most cost effective way to buy a high-end graphics card atm. The cheapest 9800 Pro I can find is £123. The cheapest x800 is £288. The x800 is definately not twice as fast as the 9800 Pro.

I haven't heard that from anyone but ATi fanboys, can you give me a link that says Nvidia and Doom 3 were working in conjunction to make this game work the best for Nvidia cards over ATi cards? If you can I will stand corrected.
