Is It Only Me That Liked The Old Ns Better?

GlowinHedhehogGlowinHedhehog Join Date: 2004-07-18 Member: 29972Members
What im thinking of is the system where you had to grab a hive to be able to morph into fade/onos..
I think the rounds had a better flow that time, and skulks was actually scary and powerful.
Even though i did like the current system in theory, i can defintley say that the old one meant greater gameplay. Those where the days!

Anyone else that agree?

Yeah It meant that you could have 2 upgrades when you get fade, and 3 when you get onos
but also I kinda jumped from 1.04 to 3.4a so that was what I was used to

One of my favorite things about the old ns was the immensly long battles even in pubs with not-so-good players. Now it doesn't seem like they last so long.

yes that was my favorite part of ns, not excessivly long, but it went on for a good time

Everyone say that it was better before.. and so i remembered it. So we reinstalled 1.04 played a couple of games.

There really isnt much to miss.

Turret farming, super onos, hive lockdown, overpowered hmg and ping of death.

And also to add 5 server crashes per hour.

3.0 owns 1.04. Sure, there were things that I like in 1.04, but overall 3.0 is definitly better to play and more balanced than 1.04

I only started recentyl but from what I know about missing games is you really miss 'the old times' but then when you play them you get bored and want to go back to the originals.

1.04 was really fun for about as long as the same exact strategy every time was fun. After that it got a little stale.

I just misseed how skulks can actually take marines on one on one in 1.04. See, if marine bhopping wasn't in 1.04, and we made jetpacks/heavy armor work and cost as it does now, it'd be pretty balanced. I wouldn't mind seeing lifeforms tied to hives again. Back then, skulks and lerks COULD defend the second hive until it went up, and Acid Rocket wasn't Vinegar Sprayer back then like it is now. Fades inspired FEAR in marines, and ONOS...well...marines said their last words when they saw ONOS, and the words are usually, "Oh NO!" instead of now, which is "Chase it, chase it, it's almost dead!!!!"

Things I missed:
Dark maps that made ns look like ns
Onos and fades were feared.
Lerks have spikes

Playing 1.04 again isn't as fun because when 1.0-2.0 came out we were new to ns then making ns fun.

I loved the old 1.xx games that I would play on LAN. One game that always stands out in my mind when I think of NS is a now legendary game to those who were there. We had been playing a game for nearly 3 hours and had been going back and forth between control of the map. One of the Alien players dies and walks across the room to the coolers to get a drink. On his way back he stumbles over a powerstrip plugged into the wall and a table of computers go black. Unfortunately on said table was the host.....
Needless to say we were looking for blood once we figured out what happened but that game was still the most fun I've and most of the others had ever had in a LAN game. Sadly something we weren't able to duplicate with 2.xx or 3.0bX. Most of the others have since given up on NS completely.

I've actually just come out of self-imposed exile (college started to take a back seat to gorge rushes) I grabbed the first release that halloween, and while I do remember the 2-3 hour games with fondness I do think NS is moving in the right direction. Yes the scare factor has been reduced a bit (probably more because of familiarity with the creatures, etc. then major changes) I'm still loving the majority of changes (and yes I DO think combat is fun) and I can say that I don't plan on leaving NS any time soon.

During 1.04 there was a res-system that scaled according to the amount of players. You wouldn't have a slow **** res flow as we do now during large games, however you would have fast as hell marine tech system. I still think they should've tweaked that scalable res system than making it linear res system.

Thats a great point, I used to love NS like that. I used to be such a thrill ride. When where heard a fade, We used to run and hide. An onos, well then we f4ed.

I wish it was like that again, that was great.

lmao... thanks i needed that (the truth can be so funny sometimes)

all in all i like the way NSC is now for the most part.

the skulks needed ap

the leark is good

the fade is perfect

the onos is good enough to do the job (still could use a boost though)

the gorge and buildings need a rethink (imo)

the rez system while workable (kharra) for larger games, needs help

marines are great. no over powered wepons. not to strong not to weak.

the sg is buged but workable

all the guns have there place and are effetive

I liked how in 1.04 there was the single gorge, the gorge was so important it got escorts, but now in 3.0+ if a gorge is under attack its not as important anymore.

Gorges back then lol you would shout at them to run from the battle while you hold them off the good ol days

mh.

i know. nearly all here miss the old-scool ns, but 3.0 is more balanced, and there are more maps ect.

Don't really miss it, nope. NS gets boring/repetitive unless you have a new release every once in a while to change around strategies. 1.04 became a lot of the same stuff, over and over.

The single gorge also happened to be one of the worst features of 1.04.

Only when they got carapace. Otherwise, skulks were at least as flimsy as they are now.

MC or SC first isn't a solid strat in 3.0, but at least you still have a chance. Anything but DC first in 1.04 was suicide.

Don't tell me that you didnt have long games in 2.01. I had a dozen of 100+min games , Now the timelimit sux i just loved to get into a 2 h game.
im a noob (playing since 2.0) but i had some action in ns cant really say was 1.* bad or not, but i really wouldnt like to be the onl gorge .

Btw why is the manual still with babblers and other stuff lmao? And why did fades have bile bombs?
• ElderwyrmElderwyrm Join Date: 2003-04-07 Member: 15296Members
Bilebomb has been moved around many times. Lerk had it back in Pre 1.0 Beta, Fades had it in 1.0-1.04, and then in 2.0 it was moved to gorge.
• theBIGonetheBIGone Join Date: 2003-02-04 Member: 13099Members
all the games in 1.xx where great. i loved the exessive teamplay, and the importance of the gorge. but the best thing was, there where only people who really liked playing a game. no lame f4 or quitting in the middle of the game.

2.xx was just simply ****. but now we have the b3.xx it is right again. it isn't that exiting anymore, and because more people are playing the game, it gets less of a teamplay, and less stratigy. more rambo's. that's the reason they inveted combat. rambo's dissapear slowly from the ns maps. but still nobody listens to the comm, and many aliens are res ****. but that doesn't matter, i've always liked ns. and always will
