You n00bs, everybody knows that the term 1337 first came around in the years following the Hundred Years War (which, of course, began in 1337). They needed a new expression to explain Joan of Arc's intelligence in battle, and some smartalec thought that "1337" would be sufficient in meaning, "Kick [donkey] like Joan d'Arc."
for those who care, the original "l33t" alphabet (it was called the alphanumeric password alphabet or something just as nerdy back then) 1 - i, l 2 - r 3 - e 4 - a 5 - s 6 - g 7 - t 8 - b 9 - g 0 - o ! - i, l @ - a $ - s ( - c + - t | - i, l
Comments
first it was 3l33t, then it was shortened to l33t and then 1337
l33tspeak was actually a way of making easy to remember alphanumeric passwords:
"bl4ckm4g3" instead of "blackmage"
someone thought it sounded cool
factiod: everyones "favorite" trojan uses port 31337 by default
no!
