Extreme Lag Please Help

on dsl.. please read 4 FPS
Alright I installed NS last night and it wouldnt work good at all..

here are my specs:

Acer v75M Mobo
AMD K6-2 500mhz processor
256MB SDRAM 133 (max supported by mobo)
13GB HD
CTX monitor
CDRom
CDRW
3.5" disk
Visiontek Nvidia Geforce4MX 420 64MB PCI (I dont have agp)
Linskys 10/100 LAN card
Efficent Networks ADSL speedstream 5360 modem
300 Watt power supply
on board sound

OS: Windows 98SE

actually I just got 256MB ram and a 300W PSU today.. I ordered a week ago from newegg.com

last night I had 96MB RAM, and a 145Watt PSU..

anyway I tried to play NS both times and once I join a team I get a constant 4.0 FPS and it runs like Im on 56k. there is no way I can aim like this.. or even move well.. it says 4 FPS but I swear it is doing .25 FPS... it's horrible.. I tried about 15 different servers in the two nights.the most recent one had a total of 6 people with me and they said the new server patch was on it.

I cannot run opengl for some reason... It will not let me, even though I have a Geforce4.. I never have been able to it just says "selected opengl mode is not supported by your video card" every resolution I try.. so I run in direct3d.. even on 400x300 I cannot move right in NS.

I play Counter-Strike on a regular basis with little lag.
I only get 10-30 FPS in CS although many people with similar specs claim to get 60 - 75 . It runs pretty smooth on CS even with the low frame rate so ti doesnt bother me.

I unchecked "high detail" in the advanced tab of customize (under multiplayer), It is set to 16bbs, and it will say 30FPS in the console until I connect to a server

the minium requirments for NS list the following:
400MHZ CPU
32MB ram
any graphics accelerator supported by Half-Life

as you can see I fit it all, yet I move liek I am on 56k and it is very impossible. my latency goes from 500 to 3000 (3000 is like I was on 56k!)

I saw many posts saying they cannot run the game and people replied that it was their RAM (128 or lower) , yet I installed 256 and it still wont run NS.I also hear people claiming that if you can run any Half-life mod you will be able to run NS.

This is a really cool mod and I was hoping I would be able to play it.

I see no difference in performance for CS or NS after doubling my RAM and PSU why? In fact CS is laggin more, but I think that may just be because it is raining like mad around here.

so here are my questions:

1.does anyone have similar specs to me? If so can you run NS? how about cs? FPS?
2.why the hell cant I run opengl?
3.Do You think that the minium requirments for this game are absolute BS?
4.Why can I only get 30FPS in CS?

thanks,
Zoda

ok i see your problem is with your graphics card driver since it had this error msg that couldn't let you use opengl... i think you should update your graphics card driver or install it... many ppl think by putting the card in the computer it works... -_- you cn download your geforce 4 driver at http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp

umm.. I've tried many different versions of the drivers.... it doesnt help man. I actually tried updating the drivers today just incase. no luck.

I'm gonna go uninstall it, use the default one and reinstall..... my PSU was too small when I put in the card, maybe I jsut need to uninstall it first and reconnect ect... be back in a few and tell you how it works

I have the same issue, 4FPS constant and sometimes goes to even .5 frames a second (entered a room as Onos, didn't see another frame until I went out the other side. :/)

    Specs:
Celeron 333 (yes, it's under the specs, but Piele has a similar system and it runs fine on his computer.)
    192MB SDRAM
Kyro 4000XT PCI (sucks bad, but runs all other mods nicely...)
    Creative Ensonique PCI sound

I can't get a *consistent* framerate or ping at all, I'd be satisfied with a constant 10 FPS but it jerks around from 4 to 12 to 0.5 and the ping goes from 82 to 1200 to 400 and back. This is constant. It's not like I'm getting a consistently crappy framerate or lag, it's just jerky and constantly spiking.

Any ideas? I've messed with the resolution, the hl settings, even overclocked the video card and closed any program running in the background except All Seeing Eye. I've never seen HL behave so erratically.

    Hi guys,

I talked to Goby tonight and it looked like most of his problems were being cause by his firewall software. Are you running any? If so, try disabling it and see if you see a big performance increase. Obviously, for security reasons, I DO NOT reccomend leaving your firewall software turned off, but this is a valid test.

I would also make sure that:

    1) You're running the latest NVidia Detonator drivers

    2) You're running the latest DirectX drivers

If you have any further questions or need additional technical support please come to either #nshelp or #naturalselectionhelp on gamesnet.

    Thank you,

i get 99.9-100 fps on all mods except NS, on NS i get 40 fps... so how many fps do you get off NS?

oh.. I dont have a firewall. I have NAV and some other programs, but I always close them when playing half-life mods.

    Here are my computer specs:

    PIII 600
    512Mb PC133 SDRAM
    GeForce256 SDR
    Creative SBLive! Value

Network Connection: Uncapped Cable (max 10Mbps downstream)

Server is within the same ISP

Applications: WinRoute NAT and Tiny Personal Firewall (Firewall Disabled every time)

All other mods I have played I get AT LEAST 30FPS no matter what. Serveral Smoke Greandes on screen etc...
Within NS my framerate is between 4 and 12 fps at times dropping below the 1fps mark
Please note: This frame rate is NOT due to my graphics card (or is it reffered to as a GPU now?) as there is no difference in frame rate between 640*480, 800*600 and my preferred 1024*768. The frame rates does not improve and is independant on the graphics card. This leads me to believe that the problem is a CPU bottleneck as there is one other game which has this exact same problem, Warcraft 3 during heavy scenes and was improved slightly by disabling practically all sounds except for the bare essential alert notifications

Another thing: My frame rate improved when I turned off the onscreen help and the ambient music which again leads me to believe that a CPU bottleneck is responsible

I'm also running on a high end computer (I'd post the specs but I'm lazy) and I'm also encountering the extreme lag/bad frame rate problem. The only difference is that I'm running a hub connection between two computers using the Sygate Manager program. I think this may be the problem but if I turn it off I will not be able to go online.

Any help would be great, thanks.

The big problem is going to be the software firewall. NS is quite CPU demanding, and your poor software firewall is fighting for the cycles to handle all the network traffic.

    Specs:

    Athlon @ 1.533GHz on KT266A chipset
    1024MB DDR RAM
    geForce4 Ti4200 w/40.52s
    Windows XP Pro
    Hardware firewall

Buttery smoove 100fps. Never drops for anything.

My problem isnt with the FPS, its with the ping. I'm on 56k, so im not expecting anything good, but for most games, I get around 180-250, but on NS, on a decent quality server, that supported 8 people, with only 5 people on, i get around 300 if I'm doing well, usualy around 500, and on bgger games, about 700-800, unplayable :/ I've heard many complaints about people on 56k, and broadband too, having problems with ping, and I've seen it in servers :/
I'm hoping its not a problem with my computer, which it proably is'nt as many other people have it :o

EDIT: Err, I've just read the common NS problems post, and it says pings are high and should be fixed in next patch, so ignore this noobishly posted post by me

I solved the OpenGL thing.. I look on the counter-strike forum and found stuff about the opengl32.dll in the gldrv of counter-strike or half-life

Im not sure which step did it, but heres what I did

    1. change go to c:windows/system and copy the openg32.dll to the folder

go to video mode change it to a new opengl mode and try and run. does it work? (you have select it again or it wont work), try to open in console to see if it will work

    2. go to the drvmap.txt file and edit it so it says the following

    "Default Default
    3dfxgl.dll 3Dfx Mini Driver
    gldrv/opengl32.dll GeForce 4"

go to video mode change it to a new opengl mode and try and run. does it work? (you have select it again or it wont work), try to open in console to see if it will work

3.since I have both half-life and counter-strike retail I was able to do this..

reinstall. It will then work fine... If you have mods for half-life just take them out of the folder while you reinstall it. then put them back... warning:reinstalling counter-strike retail may get rid of your old maps, console settigns, spray and everything.

well if you have both then just copy the 3dfx.dlll from half-life to counter-strike in the gldrv folder for both

remeber, you have to select a new mode.. If you leave it on opengl 600x800 before these steps and dont go into video modes to change it after you've done them it will not know you changed anything

    good luck

tell me which one solved the problem.

now I just need to know whats up with my lag and FPS.
