I need some help but no warez!
Ok I have a LAN and home sadly i canot play NS on this LAN since i have the same cd key all round this has been a major problem for me since DOD 1.3 and any subsequent hl mod. It has started to seriously bug since NS was released. My question could some one tell me how to bypass this security mesure without going out and buing a bunch of new HLs and i dont want to necesarily go warez.

What you just described is illegal.

The HL EULA states clearly that one purchased copy of the game per computer is required.

Well, since the only solution to your problem is a WAREZ-solution (even legitimately playing the game) I cant see this thread lasting long.

It's the same with BATTLEFIELD, each computer it seems needs its own unique CD-Key to play. So using multiple computers isn't gonna cut it. Thats IF i understand your question. Cause if you think about it, you're not going to be playing against yourself, against others, and using the same CD-Key for all of you would infringe on VALVES anti-piracy thingies.

Back on topic do you know how expensive it will be for me? A new copy of HL will cost me alomost 40$ canadian a pop with tax! Plus I have an entire lan to stock... Its kinda annoying when you think about it there punishing the ppl who arent going warez...

/me goes off to buy HL again

Not for lan play... just add
setmaster 0
sv_lan 1
to your server.cfg file or add them to the command line (+sv_lan 1)
this will allow anyone on your LAN (specifically class C i believe) to be able to play without validation of the cd keys. It will not allow internet users to play.

its a half-life server variable -- should work with all mods.

Regarding it being a WAREZ issue, it's the same case with Windows XP. The ACTIVATION code and CD-Key are for ONE computer. These companies have ZERO way of knowing who is doing what with the software. Most games say specifically, ONE-CD-KEY per player, and I can respect that they are tring to protect their property. But you found a way to exploit that so kudos.

A lot of games encourage playing multiplayer at lan parties without everyone buying the game.
Most games enforce this by requiring one cd present (Freespace, Total Annihalation, Elite Forces), and also requiring the cd to play single player. It actually encourages people to buy the game if they like it.
Valve could have made it so that it wouldnt allow more than one person to use a cd key on a lan server, but they chose not to. I would hardly call it circumventing copy protection when valve codes the ability to do it intentionally.
