I want to know how many players I can host on this home pc. This is a dedicated server.

CPU: XP2100+ AMD
Memory: 512 DDR 333
HD: 80GB ATA 133 7200 RPM
VID: AIW Radeon 8500

My connection is 512 kb up and 5Mb down. Please tell me how many players you think i can get on this server and connection. If there is a way to optimise my connection or server settings for more people please let me know or throw a link in. Thnx!! <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    You need about 5k/s upload per player as far as I know, but with 512k upload I dont think its worth setting up a server anymore than 6players or the pings will be higher than normal.

    As for ur computer you could do with more RAM.

    Well thnx for the advice but i am currently running it on 256 up since i have not upgraded my bandwidth quite yet. I can host up to 8 players fine right now. Im just trying to see if it will handle 14 players or even 16 when i get my 512 up. But if what you said is true "5KB per player", that would translate to about a 12-13 player server. Why would I have to host a 6 player server on 512k up? Unless you think the computer is not good enough.

    The biggest problem I've had with running a server on my home connection are peoples pings. Since there are probably 8-10 hops to get to the nearest internet hub, people are gonna get lag unless they live near you.

    This is a dated graph of bandwidth usage but still relevant today. You can see how much badnwidth is used for 12 and 20 player servers.

    Thanks for the graph. Last night I got to about 12 players and had no lag, so i think the server can prob handle 16, we will see <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->. Also any suggestions on rate settings for my 512 up server at 16 players? Like minrate and maxrate stuff. Thanks much for replies so far <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

    I've never seen any benefit to adding a minrate. But I have seen benefit to adding a maxrate. As you can see in the graph I ran my 12 player server with a maxrate of 3500. This worked great except for large battles where more data needed to be sent then was allowed by the sv_maxrate setting. This caused hiccups and slowdown during the endgame and in many cases was unacceptable.

    If you want to set a generous maxrate and yet limit those people who try to update their client more then they should, you could try sv_maxrate 6000 which is 6K a second, and work your way down (in 500kbit increments) to what is acceptable to you.

    sv_maxupdaterate 40 and sv_maxrate 8000 is about right for NS imo.

    Stick a minrate of around 2000/3000 on it also.

    Well I'll mess with it, thnx for the input. <!--emo&:D--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/biggrin.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='biggrin.gif' /><!--endemo-->
