Starting July 26th, the shutdown of the WON authentication servers will begin. This process will be completed on July 31st. This means players will no longer be able to access Internet features of Valve games, such as Counter-Strike 1.5, using the WON authentication servers. Users can continue using Valve games on the Steam service by downloading the Steam installer and setting up a Steam account. For more information visit www.steampowered.com. Counter-Strike 1.5 players will be upgraded to Counter-Strike 1.6 free of charge through Steam.

....this is horrible. I hate you valve. I'm losing the first server I ever played on, and still play on to this day (2.01).

I think there was a thread about this a while ago.

    Still sucks, I liked WON.

They'll update, anyway, Steam is better. I used to hate it when I first tried it. I tried it when it was still like hella in beta with a **** load of bugs. Now that it's updated there's less and less bugs. Just give it a shot .

The other thread was about WON being shut down before summer ended. This is new, because it gives an actual date.

Yeah, but it also means I won't be able to host internet games of old versions of old mods I have.... Which I like to do on occassion with my friends, seeing how it's hard for us all to get together and LAN it up.

    Another smooth move by Valve.

They shoulda made it so you can still play, like Need for Speed games. Like IP games, no WonID, just pure gaming. I know it's already an IP game, but I mean no authentication, just pure IP connection.

Does this affect other games that aren't on Steam, but use WON, e.g Ground Control?

Can you set up old HL mod servers to not authenticate with WON? Does that work?

Maybe 1.04 and 2.01 can live on that way...

GC & co. are not connected to Valve and will thus not be affected.

Me, I have to say that I won't even notice. Goodbye, WON, it was a nice time. Hello, Steam.

WON is still alive. WON HL, however, is going.

Don't you guys think its a bit rude to basically say "Oh crap now I have to play the latest version of NS." I know you don't mean it that way but its a bit irritating to people who like the newer versions, and more imporantly to the people on these forums who have put work into them.

Nope, at least I don't think. I'm pretty sure LAN still works. When WON shuts down, try this to see if online games still work. Go to New Game (or whatever it's called for the old version,) pick a map and start the server. If it doesn't go up, then in your listenserver.cfg, add a line to say sv_lan 1 (or you can not do that and just go to LAN Game and try to create. If that works, type sv_lan 0 in the console, and if your server is still up, ask somebody to join.) Anyway, restart your game, go to New Game, pick a map and start the server. In the console type sv_lan 0. Ask somebody to try to join you. That's all, if it works, then OMG HAHAHA VALVe WE OWN J00 (well DiZzy does lol.)

Classy HLDM and TFC games will be gone. It will be pretty hard to find good players on a regular basis... but when WON shuts down , the newbies who only knew Steam are going to suffer

No tears here. WON was fun, but the wheel of progress demands sacrifice.

Eh? Funny, I thought it was supposed to have its plug pulled at the end of summer?

Ah well. No tears fro me. Byebye WON.

I still don't think Valve are in direct control of WON. And the reason they made Steam, is that they were told that WON would go down no matter what, but they get some time to get a replacement online[Steam].

    Finally, and good riddance.

WON was a bug filled, crap interface where I absolutely HATED pressing escape because I had to deal with the dozens of bugs that would start up then.

    Long Live Steam.
