raz0r and FW: then either your graphiccard doesnt support it OR you need to update your drivers/directx.

Wow, detail textures really DO make a difference, with no notable slowdown (though my FPS is jumpy anyway, so I probably can't tell :/)

Just keep in mind, this is NOT what detailtextures look like in NS. (the ones released anyhow) The NS ones are not specifically taylored to the textures like these, and as a result look like grainy versions of the original ones.

Uh? Have you used the released NS detail textures? Your description is just about perfectly wrong in every sense. The NS det texs look like carefully detailed versions of the textures that they overlay. They don't look 'grainy' at all. <!--emo&???--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/confused.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='confused.gif' /><!--endemo-->

Yes, I'm actually using them right now. They don't look anything like the effects seen in the HI map you've seen the screen shots of.

If you examine the detailtextures themselves of both, you'll understand why. The ns ones are just a pattern, while the HI ones are designed specifically to enhance specific textures.

I think that the NS detailed textures REALLY look cool in origin. Let's take a peek:

    Without
    <a href='http://members.cox.net/benkarcher/temp/ns_origin0000.jpg' target='_blank'>http://members.cox.net/benkarcher/temp/ns_origin0000.jpg</a>

    With
    <a href='http://members.cox.net/benkarcher/temp/ns_origin0001.jpg' target='_blank'>http://members.cox.net/benkarcher/temp/ns_origin0001.jpg</a>

    As a side note, I couldn't notice any FPS hit at all. And I know, I didn't adjust the gamma. But unless you're blind, you can plainly see that it's... infest-ey. <!--emo&:)--><img src='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/html//emoticons/smile.gif' border='0' style='vertical-align:middle' alt='smile.gif' /><!--endemo-->

I made a simple rollover image a few days ago to illustrate what the current detail textures do to ns to a friend, this is from great viaduct.

    <a href='http://kalias.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/detail/detail.htm' target='_blank'>http://kalias.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/detail/detail.htm</a>

Yes the detail textures here are simple tiles, it'll probably be nice when the details are made specifically for the textures in ns.

Actually most if not all of the Hostile Intent textures are exactly like the NS textures; they are simple overlays designed to be tiled. Take the bricks for example, all they're doing is using the detailed texture to overwhelm the existing texture, you can even see the mortar between the original bricks in the MIDDLE OF the new bricks. They might as well have reduced the scale of the original bricks, it would have acheived the same effect.

The only way to do anything but the tiling is to use a technique like HLTex does.

All this was covered in the Mapping forum, quite a while ago. If you read the thread it talks about how it was discovered, and how to make your own, as well as the unrecognised command problem....
<a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=62384' target='_blank'>Here</a> I would suggest that you read the whole thing it is quite interesting.

If you are to lazy to read, it is because valves implementation requires a video card equivalent of a Geforce 3 TI or higher for the command to be enabled. This is discussed in the tread.

The thread also says that detailed textures will be encouraged but are not mandatory. They are in the process of deciding how to use them in an effective way with out creating a huge download for the install.

Soylent green has created a detailed texture pack for NS?s official maps. This is pack can be found <a href='http://hem.bredband.net/congal/temp/DetTex_pack.zip' target='_blank'>here</a> or in the link in his sig.

The mapping forum has even created a tool for making high res textures for HL by tricking the game using det tex... it can be found <a href='http://www.unknownworlds.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=68706' target='_blank'>here</a> though it will be difficult to impliment because thier are no highres textures for NS, they were all made at 1:1.

I'd love to get started on a wad and detail texture set, though I'd have to use a VERY SLOW emulation tweak on my card to see it within the game.

Glow effects aren't yet available in game. You can use a HL mod and load NS maps if you want to see what it looks like.

Sorry for the bump, but i HAD to show the effects r_detailtextures and cg_glow would make to NS. Here is a single comparison shot from 'Hostile Intent', which is as you all should know a HL mod. I will post more if someone will give a host, or host them for me. Admins dont like people sucking up the forums bandwidth. And yes this is the same game, map, position. One side has cg_glow 1 and r_detailtextures 1, and the other has both of them off... Spot the difference.

EDIT: Replaced low res GIF with high res JPG which is actually smaller in size.
