Ns Review

In UK PCgamer
Right, a short (random) introduction

A few days ago, i bought my magasine as usual, and was quite impressed to see natural selection being reviewed/commented on in there. they got a whole page, a whole page! and they supplied your latest version of the mod on thier DVD, along with some screenshots.

That very day, i scanned in the page and sent a scan of it to the general mail adress for ns, and I have had no reply or news post on the main page. you could say im being impatient, or the email could've been deleted for having a large attatchment. Because i was feeling impatient today, i thought i would post about it here.

To be fair, the screenshots dont give ns judgement, too much brightness, and there were a few mistakes, like version 3.4 instead of the correct 3.0b4a. this was corrected on the back of the dvd. But anyway, ive included a link to my scan of it:

Especially counting that the only 3 screenshots are of the same Combat map. And from the way the article was written, you'd think Combat was the only mode of Natural Selection. Yucko Ono.

Compared to many other gaming journalists, that'd already be a throughout examination, especially for an article that doesn't end in a numeric value. In the end, all publicity is good publicity.

    Thanks, Dred!

Yeah, the inaccuracies aren't so bad considering the compression of the whole thing. And hey, its a positive review, so who cares anyway.

Speaking of Savage, I remember one particularly dirty trick they pulled on a game reviewer right after it was released.

Now I didn't have to play more than a couple hours to realize that it was not very interesting at all. Both sides were carbon copies of each other. The weapons were ripped from quake and unreal tournament, the combat was uninteresting. The strategy was one-dimensional and the commander had no tactical value at all, all you could do was give waypoints and drop buildings. So I go read gamespot and I'm gratified to realize that I'm not the only one that thinks that way; the reviewer sort of tore them a new one.

However, they were very unhappy and dug up their server logs to prove that he only actually played the game twice for an hour each time, or some figure around that. Gamespot withdrew the article and apologised? If it was me I'd have said, "pardon me for only needing a brief time to figure out your game was crap? Maybe next time use some elbow grease or if you can't take the heat don't start the fire."

Anyway moral of the story: first impressions matter especially in entertainment so please realize this and take it into account.

I'm surprised they would have retracted it, but depending on how large a advertiser they (the game company) is/was they can have significant impact on how the game is reviewed.

That was crtiticism of many gaming magazines. Giving good reviews for crap games because the companies in question advertised heavily in their magazine.

    co_faceoff and co_angst.

I wish they would have at least tossed an image of a well done ns_ map. Maybe ns_bast or the new ns_nancy.

I am glad he reviewed the community as welcoming and friendly. Especially considering he reviewed a co_/ns_ server or two seperate servers, which in my experience, has almost always been a bit more hostile than any ns_ only server.

He doesn't seem to delve into the ns_ side of things at all though. He just introduces the mod team and the overall idea of the mod in it's entirity, then says "you can ditch the occasionally complicated resource gathering" for co_.

The old adage that "There is no such thing as bad press" holds true here. Yes, he didn't get every fact straight, sure he didn't go into as much detail as I'm sure any of us would have liked.

The facts are he was very complimentary while talking about the mod and due to this article we should see additional players checking NS out.

    That's not a bad thing...

PC-Gamer "review?" I can tell without looking what they are saying:

"10/10 game! Graphics! Sounds! Perfect! Go buy right now! Really! Buy it! Now! Only... wait... it's free? Why no one told me that?"

I wouldn't trust on anything they advertise there.

Keep in mind the UK version of PC GAMER is considerably less craptastic compared to the US version.

I'm just happy they've started using images that arent from pre-1.0 or of the Ready Room.

The previous review I saw was of ns_caged. and 2 out of 3 of the pictures were of the ready room. The third was of the marine start. Kind of gives me the idea that the guy joined the server, took a few pics, ran around abit and left to review it.

I too played the Savage Demo and became Bored with it in under an Hour. All of the classes are practically the same, the maps are hard to navigate, and its completely inferior. I fail to see how this manages to even be compared to NS.
    Its completely different.

Or finnish, for that matter. I have said this before, and will say it again: PC Gamer is just a ad magazine with a price-tag, so anything they have said there is of dubious worth.

I really wish former game developers (retired ones) would rate these games. A lot of these reviewers don't even take the time to learn the game properly and fill the column up with meaningless jargon (see the article, you will understand.) Atleast former game developers will have the technical knowledge and explain why a game would be poor or good, and fill a column with USEFUL information.

Well, my point still stands that they didn't provide enough coverage for Classic, which has made this all possible. But it can't be denied that Combat is much more friendly towards new players than Classic. Qu? ser? ser?.
