Iraqi and coalition forces were joined in their pursuit of Zarqawi yesterday by an unexpected force: a militia group threatening to kill him if he did not leave the country.
In a videotape sent to the al-Arabiya television station, a group of masked gunmen calling itself the Salvation Movement accused Zarqawi of murdering innocent Iraqis and defiling the Muslim religion.
One gunman said: "This is the last warning. If you don't stop, we will do to you what the coalition forces have failed to do."
Iraqi officials said they had not heard of the group before but that they would encourage fighters to accept the amnesty and sign up with government forces.
The threats from this latest group reveal some of the anger and frustration felt by many Iraqis towards foreigners accused of leading a campaign of suicide car bombings.

right on. this is what the news needs to show more of.

As someone else said, Rock on! It is about time that the citizens of Iraq realize that the only true way to save their country is if they do their best to move forward. They can't let everybody else make their decisions for them, and choose their political leaders for them. It is their country, they are in charge.
Zig, that is the point, it could mean whatever the person using it wants. That's why it is best left alone, it is still Trollbait, just in a more vague and intangible form that is harder to fight.
Sweet mother of crap. I'd forgotten that even existed.

I am now racking my brains to try to remember what reference you are making. I will go all night thinking about it if necessary, however. Unless someone will shed some light on this.
Finally, some local support
Considering that stretching coalition manpower over every city in the country is unfeasible, and the Iraqi defense force doesn't seem quite up to the 'defense' part yet, I think a vigilante milita has some merit (but the article did say that the vigilantes should accept amnesty and join the defense force (at least, that's how I interpreted it).
And woot for finally acknowledging that terrorist bombings usually go against basic muslim principles (especially when you kill other muslims). Maybe the extremists will realize what they're being 'extreme' about and fix themselves...
unlikely, they choose to be extremists, whether they consider themselves or not.

Actually this is somewhat of a possiblitly. Muslim law stricty forbids the waging of war against mulims unless they are coerced by an outside influence. It might just make some of these guys think twice now that thier own people are coming up against them.
Under the circumstances, I think it's fair enough to say that it's a good thing, even though it's a vigilante action.
You do realise that there are multiple ethnic groups in Iraq, with long-simmering tensions that have erupted after the fall of the totalitarian Ba'ath regime?
The simplistic view that the current problems are somehow completely external to Iraq is a dangerous one, and the idea that yet another bunch of vigilantes (who in this case support something approximating to the Coalition's viewpoint) can help fix the current situation is worrying. Remember that people like Osama bin Laden started off as 'freedom'-fighters with viewpoints matching those of Western governments...
So, you've got a puppet government with no real powers, a continuing military occupation by the Coalition, various warring factions continuing to attack each other and the occupying forces in increasingly horrible ways, and a disunited populace caught up in the midst, in the hellhole that is modern Iraq.
And they still haven't found the Dubya-Em-Dees!
As said, they could get in the way.
But you gotta remember, coalition and local forces have to go through red tape. These guys get a call, its going down, RIGHT NOW. And unlike America- which being were hosting Saddam's trial, and will never put one of these bastards to death- they are probably willing to torture the hell out of this A-Hole.
Lets hope they succede. Militia forces have been proven in places like this to be more effective than a official military, because of the no-red-tape. It will get civilians hurt probably though, but hopefully they get Zarqawi before that point.
