Linux Friendly Download Format?

<div class="IPBDescription">Can someone please supply a zip?</div> Hi,
After a year away I thought I might give natural selection another blast, and see what this combat schenanigans is all about.
Anyway, imagine my dismay when I see that the downloads are windows only. Half Life has worked fine in linux for ages and I would really appreciate it if someone could put up a zip/tar.gz of the natural selection mod directory, plus any other necessary files.

If you can help me out, contact me on sdt at dsl dot REMOVE ME pipex dot com and I will be very happy :-)

Thanks again!

Sandy.

Try upgrading to Cedega (wineX 4.0). It was release a week or 2 ago. Otherwise, you can use the NS installers in Linux via wineX, as me and my roommate have both successfully done.
If that doesn't work for you, install it on steam in a windows environment and copy over the NSP directory in your steam\steamapps\<email>\half-life\ directory.
Additionally, you're only going to find downloads for windows clients (there are linux server downloads) because the Half-Life engine was made for windows and there is no client support from Valve in ever getting Half-Life on a linux environment, much less a half-life mod that Valve doesn't own.

I am using Cedega, and the installers do not work.
I have no idea about this steam thing, how do i install NS through steam? At first glance it seems like a steaming pile of cack.

You can use the Linux "unzip" tool...
  • SandySandy Join Date: 2003-02-28 Member: 14120Members
    sdt@Tard:~$ unzip ns_install_v3_b1.exe
    Archive: ns_install_v3_b1.exe
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
unzip: cannot find zipfile directory in one of ns_install_v3_b1.exe or
ns_install_v3_b1.exe.zip, and cannot find ns_install_v3_b1.exe.ZIP, period.

Im waiting for someone to supply a mod directory zip, as I dont have access to windows therefore cant decompress the retarded 'self extracting files'.

Its pure laziness to be honest, even though you are dealing with windows users you dont need to feed them your mod through a straw. Majority of mainstream quake 3 mods use simple compressed files. Time and time again the half life community show themselves to be a bit lacking in brainpower, and in my opinion if you cant figure this out you shouldnt be playing a complicated game such as natural selection, to be honest. Im sure if you posted zip files only your tech support forum would be like 'what do i do with this zip thing? how do i get aliens on my pc? my computer bsod because i double clicked a file it doesnt know??'.

Anyway I am sure I am not the only person with this problem. Can someone please action?

gota love the 3 bumps coming from some one who complains that a comunity lacks intelegence.

    Any way.

As you don't have Steam installed you can't realy play the Beta (or any further releases).

Steam is Required (yes, you can get it working on WON, however WON will go down AND there are about 5 WON servers of NS B3)

And last I checked, winex knew how to deal with selfextracting zips and installers.

oh, guide for how to install NS in windows (find a friend with it and just copy the NSP folder as EThief said)

    <!--QuoteBegin--></div><table border='0' align='center' width='95%' cellpadding='3' cellspacing='1'><tr><td><b>QUOTE</b> </td></tr><tr><td id='QUOTE'><!--QuoteEBegin-->1) Install Steam.

    2) Play HL atleast Once via Steam (just booting up the training mission will do).

    3) Download these 3 files:
    ns_install_v3_b1.exe
    ns_v30_b4_patch.exe
    ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe

    4) Install NS V3.0 Beta 1 (ns_install_v3_b1.exe) (This should auto install to steam\steamApps\your@email\half-life\nsp, if it does not, move the NSP folder there).

    5) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4 (ns_v30_b4_patch.exe) (point this at steam\steamApps\your@email\Half-Life\ do NOT include the NSP).

    6) Install NS V3.0 Beta 4a (ns_v30_b4a_patch.exe) (See * at bottom).

    7) Search your Hard drive(s) for folders named nsp.

    8) If you have more than one you messed up.  Goto Step 3.

If you folow these steps properly you will not get client.dll or map.bsp errors.

If you are positive you have folowed them corectly then redownload the installer form a different location.

*There aslo seems to be a bug with, atleast some of, the 4a installers.  Try pointing it at steamApps\your@email\ instead of steamApps\your@email\half-life

Note: This is a file stored on my desktop because I have to use it so many times.<!--QuoteEnd--></td></tr></table><div class='postcolor'><!--QuoteEEnd-->
