Why Me?

my credit card has been violated
I got a call from Capital One a couple days ago. Seems my credit card has been used to charge up ~$7,000 worth of electronics at various stores. Odd thing is that I HAVE my credit card, right now – and have never “lost” it.

The last legitimate charge was in last December, so I guess it was easy for Capital One to identify odd usage. They’ve cancelled that card (and reissued me a new one). Will I be held responsible to pay for those charges? They’ve opened an investigation concerning the fraudulent charges but I don’t know how likely it’ll be that I won’t have to pay anything.

What should I be doing right now? Anything? I’m going through and canceling cards I never use, and I was thinking of calling and lowering my credit limit on the cards that I keep. Should I be doing my own research to clear these charges or should I leave it up to the Capital One investigation?

If you use the credit card to buy something in a shop some of the cashiers can copy down the number. And stuff. Credit cards aren't really that safe, since all you need is a name, the number, and some basic info to use it on the net.

Some people can install card readers over the slots in cash machines. All they need to do is to get a blank card and copy the details across. Stick a fake signature on it and it is ready to use at any shop. Make sure when you use a cash machine that there is nothing over the slot, it should be flat and in line with the rest of the machine.

I once saw a programme about a guy who used people's
credit cards to get himself rooms in Luxurious hotels, rent
Limo's and buy goods.

He would simply go shopping in a normal place, and wait
for someone to be standing inline, waiting to be served,
who had their credit card out ready to be swiped by the cashier.
(It's amazing how many people do that, look next time you're at a
supermarket.)

He then joined the queue behind them and tapped their card
details into his mobile phone.
He seemed really pleased with himself when telling the camera-men
that. He said he would have loved to have seen some of the people's
faces when they got their monthly statements.

I'm probably worrying GrayDuck alittle now.
If you didn't spend that money then you probably won't have to
worry about a thing. Expect a fair few phone calls and letters from
Capital One while they investigate. Reply to them as quickly as
possible and they'll get it sorted alot faster.

Most of the time it's the stores that are held responsible for not verifying identification well enough.

Shred the receipts for stuff you paid for in cash. Burn the ones with credit info. Make those crooks work to find out it's all useless.

I believe my debit-y card thing has a "you are responsible for paying $50 or the amount worth of fradulent use, whichever is less" statement in it. I'm sure yours would have something similar.

As long as you've reported it, they shouldn't really charge you anything [above your specified amount in your contract] (...but you are supposed to read those contracts...you know?).

That $50 charge should only be for unreported stolen cards. You can't do *anything* about someone stealing the number until you see charges made.

My dad had a card once that people kept racking up pre-paid phone cards on- he called the credit card company (it took the better part of the afternoon- expect paperwork!) and signed some stuff and got it refunded. They put some "fraud protection" crap on and it happened again, then they just gave him another card and it's been fine since.

Always keep receipts, and any junk mail you get or worthless bank mail shred- many have personal info.

That really sucks...Did you find out howthe person got your credit card number? Something must have happened somewhere for someone to get it, becasue if you never have lost it and someone made some charges to it then someone has it.

Hmm... All the claims of "stolen credit cards". Think you could buy like 10000 dollars worth crap for yourself and say someone stole your card?

you could, but when your bank will be investigating and will find out that the "stolen" merchandise has been sent to your home (or relative) you better have to get some VERY good explanations.

Ya.. go ahead and try that Akira

But for ANYBODY with a credit card/etc, and i mean EVERYBODY, you should follow this advice [given earlier in the thread by others, but just clarifying it here]:

absolutely no receipts, credit card info, papers, etc, go into the bin, on the floor, on the wall, or outside. if youre getting rid of them, or dont need them, BURN THEM to a CRISP. even the most unimportant stuff. stuff you need to keep, file them all, then put them all in a small $30 mini-safe.. not secure at all for valuables, but if someone breaks in your house, at least you can see if your box is missing and then cancel all your credit cards etc.

be careful about where youre putting your credit card - keep it in your wallet, take care of your wallet, think about where youre typing up credit information, if ya gotta put it somewhere keep it shielded from view, and look at where youre putting it.

if you have to give it to a waiter at a restaurant [you know how they take the credit card out back and do their thing], then take a look at who takes it, name, etc.. i cant think of how to actually make sure they dont write down the info, but you can still make yourself as secure as possible - put a strict spending limit on your card, and check your spending habits online as soon as possible, every time its updated. just a quick check that takes 2 minutes, and youll be infinitely more secure, so when you look and theres a $9999 purchase of a plasma TV screen that is en route to a house other than your own, you can ring up quick =] this is also easier for the banks etc, as they can start their investigation much sooner to the crimes

good luck, but remember - YOU are vulnerable, if you have a credit card. dont wait until you get burned to secure yourself

Credit card companies don't care about fraud. They make so much money on the interest rates (18% in the UK) that the level of fraud is insignificant to them.
